Let us also adopt the suggestion of the President and send suitable presents to the needy. Mr. J. T. Roberts last week shipped by express twelve fox hounds to a hunter in 'Colorado, for which he received $75, the .purchaser paying the express. Last year Mr. Roberts sold two dogs to a Missouri hunter, and he was so much pleased with them that the late order was the result. The Missouri hunter writes that in a chase his dogs often catch the grey fox, bat that invariably it is the dogs he bought from Mr. Roberts which catch the red fox. If other hunters want dogs from this Coun? ty, they can readily be supplied, and we think Anderson would be considerably ahead on the transaction. In speaking of the work of the pick? pockets at the State Fair last week, the Colombia Record says: "Mr. M. Erwin, of Honea Path, missed a small sum from his trousers pocket. He turned and saw two men, walked off, returned and made sev? eral movements as if to see that the bal? ance of his money was secure. Presently ? a man leaned on his shoulder, another stood close in front of Mr. Erwin, when one of the thievos carelessly let a scarf fall over the supposed location of Mr. Erwin's money. In n moment or two Mr. E. felt one of the thieves in the act of unbuttoning his vest, when he tamed and seized the scoundrel. His confeder? ate seized Mr. Erwin, but the1 cry of 'po? lice' soon found thief number one in the hands of the law." We haye just returned from a very pleasant trip into Northeast Georgia, and during our visit we spent two days in Harmony Grove, one of the most pro? gressive and prosperous towns in that sec? tion of the Empire State. It is situated on the Northeastern Railroad, which runs from Athens to Lula, on the Air Line Road, and is the centie of trade for the four surrounding counties, handling from. ton to thirteen thousand bales of cotton annually. ? The surrounding country is a Yery fine farming section, and land is comparatively cheap. Like everywhere else in the South, however, tho people raise too much cotton. There are quite a number of Carolinians in and around Harmony Grove, and some of them na? tives of Anderson County. We met a number of the prominent business men and citizeus of the town, and we can say unfeignedly that we have nover met a more clever, sociable people. During our stay in Harmony Grove we were a guest of the Bohannon House, which is under the management of Mr. Berry Bohannon, a native of Anderson, who certainly knows how to run a hotel. His houso is recognized as one of the best hotels in the State, and is a most pleasant place to stop at. Hard Times'. Mr. Editor : The times continue hard. Economy is wealth, and if we practice it enough it will win. Short crops and low prices for cotton can be overcome by it. The high tariff won't hurt those who don't buy much goods. Agricultural Col? leges won't make the times easy, for times are hard iu Mississippi. These colleges do good, but it takes something more to give easy times. It takes industry and economy. Our people use industry. An? derson County made 30,000 bales of cotton this year, and at $40.00 per bale will real? ize $1,200,000. Think of it! We have spent over a million of dollars?sent from the County to pay for productions made elsewhere. Money would be easy if our expenditures had been less than one million. Just think of it! Wc can make them less. Observer. A Tree That SnowB. Under the above caption, the Greenville News, of last Friday, says: "Anderson County is bound to be right along with the front of the procession and does not allow anybod}' to pass-her in anything. When Charleston and Abbeville were boasting of their earthquake cracks some time ago Anderson promptly produced one as loug, as wide and as deep as any? body's. Now raining trees are fashion? able and Anderson comes forward and reaches for the belt on the strength of a tree that snows. It is-a large oak tree about five miles from Piedmont and is said on the authority of responsive per? sons who have seeu it iu operation and tested it to drop snow at regular intervals and during considerable times. "Tho raining trees in other parts of the State are said to be explained by the pres? ence on them of small Insects known as a rain bugs which secrete water in their bodies and emit it at regular times. These insects aro said to develop only on arid land and in very dry atmosphere and their presence is due to the drought and not to the earthquake. It may be that tho cold air of the early morning in Andor son may condense particles of water from theso insects into snow, causing the phe? nomenon." A Great Discovery. Mr. Wm. Thomas, of Newton, la., says : "My wife has been seriously affected with a cough for twenty-live 3~oars, and this spring more severely than ever before. She had used many remedies without relief, and being urged to try Dr. King's New Discovory, did so, with mostgratify iug results. The first bottle relieved her very much, and the second bottle lias absolutely cured her. Sho has not had so good health for thirty years." Trial Bottles Free at Hill Bros. Drug Store. At a call meeting of the Pendleton Farmers' Society, held November 9th, 1SS6, Dr. P. H. E. Sloan presented tbo following preamble and resolutions, which were unanimously adopted: Whereas, in the mysterious Providence of God our esteemed and honored Presi? dent, Mr. O. A. Bowen, has been removed from this scene of probation ; and whereas, it is meet that we should give expression to the feelings which so painful an event can? not fail to produce; be it therefore Resolved, That this Society deeply deplore the loss of one who in his associations with them, merited for himself their cordial regard, and impressed them by the earnest? ness with which he represented the interests of this Society. Resolved, That this Society tender to the bereaved family of our deceased fellow member that respectful condolence under a dispensation which has plunged them into the profoundest grief Resolved, That a memorial page of the Minute Book of this Society be inscribed with the name and date of the death of our deceased President, and that a copy of this preamble, and these resolutions be sent to the family of the deceased, and be published in the Anderson papers.
