As wo approached we noticed H?X or eight small boys scamper off towurd the house. "That is the way they do things here," was the prompt reply of our companion, a TrUBtee, to our question as to what it meant. We entered after a time. We found a well constructed house made comfortable by a handsome, Dew stove, famished with bright, new desks, and occupied by quite u number of children aod what they called their teacher. Tue teacher met us at the door with dishev eled bair and boot legs outside bis panis, and with au ejaculate, "Good morning, geutlemen, come in and be scated," re sumed hi? work. And such a work as it was-may tho futes deliver us from see ing euch again. The fluor looked liku ii had not been swept in a month ; tho children were allowed to go out just when they pleased and return if it suited them ? they were allowed to sit wherever they desired and to change seats at will ; they were allowed to make us much noise as they could, studying out in a tono pain fully (to us) audible, having nu restraint put upon them whatever. Now, then,. I leave it to the reuder to sny whether that is not a real curiosity. Just imagine thirty children spelling out with all their might while the teacher is pretending lo teach a clans of six or eight. Well thut is not the worst of it. That teacher (?) has been going on fur yeurs just that wuy. The fact tbnt such a ihiug in iu existence in Anderson County is so ridiculous thai one becomes almost disgusted nt the thought of it. But tho worst is not told yet. That teacher (?) does not propuse to change bi? modut operandi. When we call jd his intention lo the big mistake lu bad made iu discarding all system, he threw himself back on his dignity, and tcplied with all the pomposity of style : "Yes, sir; but that is simply a difference of opinion. Imprisonment has no terror for men like Kerns; they are iuHt-nsible to disgrace and do uot regard free feeding and blank ets as a thing to be dreaded. They con tiuue their system of shunning work and stealing what they want and accept oc casional imprisonment as incidents in their slothful and generally pleasant lives. When we reflect that probably such thieves are detected in only about ti lift h of their crime*, that many of them will live scores of years at sn annual cost to the taxpayers of $G0 or moro nnd that they steal and consume hundreds of dol lars more while producing absolutely i ot h i ng, we can understand what a tro mend nus (I ra n they make nn the resource* of the country. The* remedy is easy. If Kerns, for in-tance, knew thal conviction of larceny would cause him to receive from twenty to forty lashes well laid on his bare back he would limit his thieving to the rare opportunities when detecion is apparent ly impossible, and would work for his bread. The punishment would be a real one, which he could feel and ti mle. stand and would dread. It would be inexpen sive and quick and, woufd deter other llueves from stealing. There is no valid objection to the use ?f the Whipping post for criminals like Kerns-certainly no objection which can ?eigh against its nd vantages. Indiscrim inate whipping which would Include whipping women and menin bad health* would be brutal. But legal safe guards ct 11 be devised to limit the - use of the lash to criminals physically able to en* dare it who c???not be controlled by other methods. - The restoration of the whipping post would save thousands of dollars eve? y year to the people of the State and di minish crime thirty per cent.- Greenville Neus. ----Mrs. B. RlCHMOXl', February 24.-The war horse of Stonewall Jackson, which ha* just reached the New Orleans Exposition and is attracting so much attention, has an eventful history. Since the nar the animal has, until recently, been in the care of Mrs. ,?ackr??ti's brother in North Carolina. She gave the animal to the Virginia .Military Institute, where be Wss cared for and allowed lo wander ov< r the ground?, the pct of every oue. ile has not worn a ?addle since the war. The horse was known aa Little Sorrel, aud his history is novel and interesting. A member of Jackson's staff, now in this city, remarked to day that Little Sorrel wa? made a Confederate against bis will. In the Spring of 1861, when Major Jack son had taken command at Harper's Ferry, a number of horses were captured on a train from the North on the Balli more and Ohio Railroad. Jackson re quested his Quartermaster to select a borne for bim from the lot, and Little .Sorrel was picked out.
