Brave Ella Reed, Reed's ranch did not differ materially from hundreds of others in Colorado. The same straggling, one-storied struc ture, perfectly innocent of paint, with outbuildings looking as if they were ready to tumble down. The family con sisted, at the time of this story, of Joe Reed, the proprietor, his wife aud two children. Ella, tho eldest, was a rather pretty girl of eighteen, who for several years bad relieved tho tired mother r* much of the burden of tho house work, attended to the duties of the dairy, aud was a good horsewoman withal, often accompanying her father lu rough ride? of miles when looking for stray callie. Unce a week Mr. Reed went to Denver to sell the dairy products, and purchase such articles of food ss could not be raised on the ranch. Willie frequently accompanied him, and th? two womeo were always kept loaded for emergencies, concealing them in the folds of her dress. Hastily rejoining her mother in the larger room, she was just in time to see two burly looking milhun enter by the door. The taller of the two mon de manded supper, "and let it come quick ly, too," bo Baid. in a menacing tone. Thc brave ?irl placed the food on the table, knowing that Ibo scoundrels would satisfy their hunger bo for o putting their purpose of robbery, and possibly mur der, into execution. She then sat down in front of them nod watched them. The moment their meal was completed, she suddenly thrust thc muzzles of tho pistols in their faces, threatening U shoot if they moved. thought nothing of being left alone in the houso until long into the night, a i the distance to thc city made the drive a long one. lt was on one of these even ings in the early full, juHt ns they had completed their supper und tho mother was arranging tho table for tho hungry father and non, that tho younger woman went to tho barn, tho hack of which was immediately on the road, to see a calf that was sick. Suddenly sho heard the voices of men in the mad near the barn. Listening and scarcely daring to breathe, sbo heard the words that al ai os t froze her with terror. "Thc old man kens bis money box in tho drawer o? tbs old bureau, but tho old woman carries the key." "How can we get at it ?" asked another voice. ''We cun bind both women, and if tbey make any noise, wo can stop that." For a moment the terrified listener was fairly paralysed with fear; then, she started up, and running quickly round to tbe back of the house and crawling through an open window, went ton closet and took from it two revolvers, which Expostulations and protestations were in vain ; the heroic girl stood there with eyes Hashing and determined, for whst to her seemed ages. Tho poor mother, aa soon as she comprehended tho situa tion, overcome by her great terror, had fainted and WOB lying on the floor. At last the sound of wagon wheels was heard coming toward tho house, and in a momont the father and brother entered ibo house in company with an uncle who had arrived in Denver that day from their old eastern homo in Pennsylvania, and by the merest accident met Mr. Reed on Sixteenth street, in Denver. As soonias they comprehended the situation compelled tho ruffians with revolvers nt their heads to submit to being bound with rones, and when daylight came they were taken to the county seat and placed in jail. Ibe brave girl, as soon as she was relieved from her terriblo guard duty, and the horrible strain on her nerves was taken off, went into a succession of hysterical rposms, and it was for weeks that her reason if not her life, was de spaired of. She eventually recovered, however, and afterwards married a wealthy Denver gentleman, and is now living in Queen City. The two men were recognized as old offenders, in fact they were fugitives from justice from a distant county, and afterwards served a long time in the penitentiary in Canon City.-Rocky Mountain Neirs. Tho Planets. Professor Richard A Proctor lectured last night in Concert Hall, Academy of | Music, on "The Planets." He compared tho different bodies in the Bolar system to the treeB in the forest-some like the sapling, young, others of mature growth : others again old, and others still withered and dead. These things followed just os in any other evolution. This earth is in its middle life, doing what she was in tended to do. Tho stages of a planet's life wero given from the time when it was formed by the gathering together of fragments until its death. The ii rat singe is that of intenso heat, nnd the greater part of the time the planet would bo a masa of vapor, the orb being lustrous and glowing, giving out intense heat. Later it woola lose beat, and the greater part wnuld becomeliquld, afterwards becoming solid. . The earth while in its first stsge had probably a diameter of 10,000 or 12.000 miles instead of 8,000 as at, pres-' ont. ' In the earlier etagts the volcanic and other disturbances were much great er than now. The globe gradually be came cool enough for life, and life would begin. There ia evidence that the earth is tens of millions of years old, but it is difficult to say what is the age of a planet when life on lt begins. Sir Isaao New ton believed that tub waters of the ocean were hoing gradually absorbed by tho earth. The waters of the sea are being diminished in this way, bat in what degree cannot be said. They are absorb-' ed to the thickness of a sheet of paper in one year, tba thickness bf one inch in ono hundred years, in ten millions of) yoars, (a mere second in tims,) 10,000 feet. In tim? ali the water would be gone, .and in: a long period the air itself j would become so thin that it would not support life: Planets, like other bodies, cool slower as they.are ot greater bulk. remane are yet in their youth or first stage, while the small planeta oro in their advanced age. The larger ones have the characteristics of youth and tho 'email ones of old age, ll Illustrations ..' of these things were thrown on tho .Gereon. Ballimore Sun, December ith. The Whole Race in the Garden of Eden. We aro all in tho garden just n>' was Adam, and before us as before him hangs tbe fruit of good r.nd evil. It is a pity to chaTge upon Eve the follies of our lives. Poor mother of us all, she had sorrow enough of her own ; why must we lay upon ber namo any blame for our misfortunes? We arc in the same garden where she stood, and have exactly the power she possessed of making the wiser choice. Weare equipped with full power to choose the good or the evil. It is high time for us to conclude that if Adam did badly in the Garden of Eden, we are at full liberty to do better in the same place. We all see the Hituation better than it WAH seen by tho first man. He felt that perhaps the forbidden tree bore sweet, good fruit ; we all know that its fruit is tin '..lill of bitterness. It is of no moment (bat our garden of trial in not by the Euphrates. Tho little spot of ground through v/bich four branches of a river ran, spreads out and covers all tho continent, and Adam and Eve stnnd for the human ruco. We are all in the en closure, some sinning and dying, others obeying tho Almighty and advancing to eternal life.-/Yo/, buring. - A crazy negro, named Moses McCall, who baa been in tho Asylum twice, en tered the cabin of three negro women in Georgetown County on tho night of the lilith ult., with his axo in hand.
