Experimenta in sorghum culture have been carried on to such on extent '.hat the Agricultural Department reports upon tho probability of furnishing from this source alone all the sugar needed for home consumption. Thc difficulty of crystal i zing tho syrup of sorghum cane into sugar has been overcome, ?nd before another decade, the United States may save ono hundred million dollars annu ally by removing tho necessity of sac charine importation. The Heed of sorghum is said to be one of the best kinds of food for fattening hogs. Professor Dodge is of the opinion that thia can be made almost as useful to Americans n-: the bamboo is to Chinese. There in no part of tho plant and no part of the refuse produced in tb? mak of the augur but can bc put to some use. Thc seed is equal to outs and other grain, us stock food, and its value, when the sorghum is raised in quantity, goes far toward defraying tho cost of cultivating thc crop. The seed product is from twenty to thirty bushels per acre, and its value in some localities baa been estima ted at seventy-five cents per bushel. The loaves and the crushed refuse of tho cane stalks, technically known as begasso, aro found to make excellent fodder, having a lee.ling value twice a? ^rer.t ns ensilage. Or thc bagasse can be leached, and HO entirely exhausted of its sugar, and the remaining refuse used for fuel or for the manufacturo of paper pulp. Pulp thus made was pronounced by au excellent paper-maker to be worth four and n half cents por pound, (lr, with the addition of quicklime, the begasso is found to mako nu excellent compost. Thc refuse in tho boiling of the ?uico hus its uses also. The first skimmings make a good fertilizer, and the HI ;ond have nu impor tant uso in thc making of vinegar. All this leaves only tho leaves of the plant unaccounted for. If some experiment ?rig genius could find a uso for them, sorghum cano would deserve to bo known pre-eminently us tho Useful Plant. Tho yield of cane per nero varies from eight to twenty tons, with a value of from $2.80 to $4 per ton. Thc average yield por aero is about (?00 pounds. So that tho financial value of thu crop itself, without taking the by-products into con sideration, compnren favorably with that of any other standard crops. Tho indus try hus been successfully carried on all through tho South and in most of tho Western Hintes, oven as far North ns Wisconsin. Although it has not yet been developed to any considerable ex tent, these experiments by the Agricul tural Department, and its reports of others that have gono beyond thc stage of experiment, indicate that there ss n great future in thc United States for tho sorghum industry. Just as this rovclalion us to tho possi bilities of sorghum bursts upon tho world, New Orleans is all agog with tho discovery of a process called tho "Stroll linum," whereby every particle of juico can bo extracted from cano und every drop of molasses converted into sugar. The process is thus explained : "Stronti nuin has the strongest ntllnity for sugar. Mixed with molasses it causes tho imme diate deposit of the saccharine matter. Krom this the strontintim cnn then bu separated by the use of carbonic acid gas, ?And utilized again without loss. Thus, it will be seen, the process is a simple anti inexpensive ono, as the samo strontintim can bo used from week to week ; und as it is cheap and can bo procured in large quantities, there ought to bo no difficulty in the use of this chemical." If thia bo reliable, and little doubt is expressed, the value of thu Louisiana sugar crop is doubled by un inexpensive chemical discovery. We have, from time, alluded to the importance of jute culture in the South, und shown that tho day a decorticating machino could be invented, a .second crop for this section, almost as important as cotton, would become a permanent institution. The Now Orleans papers claim that practical trials of n ipachlne invented by Mr. Krane Luft havo demonstrated the feasibility of preparing tho jute plant for manufacturing purpo ses. There will be improvements upon tho Luft machine, and vory soon Mis sissippi, Louisiana and other .States of the South will be raising juto and manu facturing it into fabrics. Mr. 0. Mcnelas, of Mississippi, who has brought juto culture into prominence and, moro than any other person, stimu lated the invention of a decorticating machine for that fibrous plant, is a pro found believer in the ability of thc South to emancipate this country from the Chinese and Japanese tea monopoly. Ho has ?bown that the tea plant thrives in this section, and that capital employed in its proper manipulation would reap a rich harvest. Ureat Britain bas made tea culture in India successful, and thore is no reasou why it should not be eventu ally a Southern staple. We believe thnt n bounty offered by tho (lo7crnmont or States would make tea culture at thc South just as wonderful a success ns tho production of salt in Michigan has become. Mr. Menelas, in a lecent pri vate letter to tho editor of the Picayune, says : "That we shall produco tea in this country, that we shall become indepen dent of oriental Asia and save our country from naying it an annual tributo of *25,000,000'to $30,000,000,1 have not the slightest doubt." Verily, we are on the eve of marvel ous developments in many ways. If sorghum can be turned to such numerous uses ; if sugar can be doubled in produc tion ; if jute shall approach cotton in usefulness; and if tea is destined to become a Southern crop-what inde scribable changes are just abend in Southern agriculture? The resources of our Southern country have lain too long dormant. They are just beginning to awaken into appreciation and new life. - "Are angels ever sleepy ?" is a question which an English psychology cal society is trying to solve.
