The prevalent idea that superstition exists only among the very ignorant ia far from true; yet, with tho sailor, su perstition seems to be inborn. Let one attempt to deny Jack's theory about "Davy Jones's locker," in tho bottom of the sea, and bc will ho met with strong if not convincing argument that he ix mistaken Davy Jones is credited with having many set laws which, though they may be unwritten, must he rigidly observed. To go to sea on Friday, the carrying of dead bodies at sea, the killing of a cat, thc harming of one of "Mother Carey's chickens," the dropping of a water-bucket overboard while wosbing down decks, are believed to he offences for which Davy Jones will demand satis faction either by the sacrifice of ont man or th? pulling of a ship lind its entire crew into his lor.ker The carrying of a corpse ou the ocean longer than it is necessary to sew it up in canvas with heavy weights to insure its sinking below thc depth'; which fishes frequent, will cause a panic among a ship's crew. The killing of a eat on board a vessel is thought to be extremely unlucky, and woe to the person who should he found guilty of such au act. It was said that the captain's excuse was "to make repairs," tut it came from good authority that he bsd a strong aversion to starting on a voyage on Friday. The "ocean tramp" steamship lihimuidda, which was wreck ed en the Nova Scotian coast ou Tues day, sailed from this port on the previ ous Friday. This superstition socms to prevail in yatching circles us well, and the question was asked a few dayB ogo: "When wes there ever a yacht regatta on Frida* ?" Regattas do sometimes occur on that day, however, hut it is seldom. For itiitanco, of the many yatching con tests in tuu country for this season Fri day has been religiously uvoided for all excepting by tho Chicago nnd New Ha ven yacht clubs, which will sail their animai regattas on August 3, and the Quincy, Mass., Yacht Club, which has appointed August 10. If one nf these little birds should be swept aboard in a great storm, as ia frequently the case, no sailor will touch it. The dolphin and purpnise aro unwel come to the sailor when they suddenly appear during a calm, and, if they skip about, a severe gale is expected. D Bbarks follow a ship for several days it means that a death is to occur. Any one who bes seen the haddock must have noticed a matk on each side of the gills. This, sailors, essert, waB made by St. Peter with his finger and thumb when he took the tribute money out of the mouth of the fish. This, perhaps, ac counts for ihe belief of Scotchmen that it is the "riebest" fish that was ever put on the table. The most superstitious sailors are the Scandinavians, who be lieve in tho existence of Neck, ?i raer?n, having the head of a man and the /. in? ringlets or a girl. Neck, weal .. a reu cap, elis upon the ??70S aud plays npon the harp. His melody is so at tractive that sailors become charmed by it, and in this way many have perished. The Norwegians are firm believers in tho "kraken," a monster devil-fish whose body is over a mile long, only to bo found in the deepest waters. It feeds upon fishes and devours whole schools at a time. Fishermen who hove mistaken it for an island and taken refuge on ita back have been drowned in the whirl pool made by the sudden sinking of tho monster. - The daughter of the ?ate Harvey Jewell BO me weeks ago dreamed that she saw an undertaker drive up to her resi dence with a hearse. The discussion finally tonk a wider scope, and Dr. Conrad Ulrich, of l'enn sylvania, stated he believed in herculean treatment (or croup. He ?aid that he ha'l dosed n child with twenty grain doses of calomel, giving as much as 300 grain in forty-eight hours, and hy this means had saved the patient's life. Hy the way, this Dr. Uhlrich seems to hen genuine reformer. Mothers may he edified at his emphatic review of baby? bond. As the season for infant mortality is near at hand, we re produce the above treatment, which strikes us as full of windora. More children arc killed by overfeeding than anything else, and if it were possible to tell the true story of tho causes of the death ol tho baby nearly all the poetry and sentiment allowed ou such occasions would sound liku a mockery. "It is barbarous," said tho doctor, in conclusion, "to force down a child's throat some of the vile stud" proscribed by physicians." lu the discussion that followed several dociors expressed the belief that people might cnll them homeopaths if they re sorted to sugar, bul ono physician said be did not care what people called him, ho thought it his duty to make the medicino as pleasant ns possible.
