Why Farmers Don'l Prosper. Not long ago I found a brother funner in ft very bad way. Ho Baid that it bad actually come to it that a man could not make a'living farming in thia country, and if he could lind anybody lo give Ilia land to, he was going to hunt new grounds. I was sorry for him, tor he did look powerfully long-faced. .Says I : "llave you tried to make a living farm .illg?" "Have I tried!" he ?aid, willi a look thal indicated that I was a fool. "I have worked myself ?ind folks nearly to death, and wc have been getting poor er every year." "This h? strange," says I ; "Miine people do make a living righi here in ibis country. I have not lound it hard to do." After takirg a long look at mc, hu said: "I carried my la-t cotton to mar ket the other day, and when I went to square up J was left in debt for meat and bread la-t year, and now I have got ev erything to buy this year. Them mer chants j tint lake all a poor farmer can make, and lin n they ain't satisfied. We all work hard and have nothing, and we arc always in debt. This is no country tor a white man. " As he said this his voice trembled and he shook. It made tue real sorry ; for bc is a good, hard working man. Said I : "How do you manage, /.eke 1'itkin: Do you make a good garden and have plenty ot vegetables in their season'."' Looking down at his feet, he replied: "Do you reckon I have nothing lo do but paddle in a garden .' 1 tell you it is all I can do to work my crop.'' "Well," says I, "you have been on thc same place fifteen years -reckon you have lots of fruit of differcul sorta to eat in summer and fall aiid nut up for winter." "1 need {my land ' - my crop." "Ho you raise plenty of Ir di and sweet potatoes to du you? "1*1 nty, while they last, and that ain't lui g." "Do you keep cows lo give you milk and butter?" "Some limes." "Does your wife, ruiso many chickens and turkeys, and such like?" "How can she when she has to help with the crop?" "Do you make plenty of corn, oats and hay for your own usc ?" "Of course I don't, when 1 am obligedlo plant a full crop of cotton to pay my ? debts ami buy something to eat." Sev eral fellows Hitting around said: "Thai's what'd thc mutter willi Sallie." Says I, "Friends I want to tell you what is the matter with Sallie, and Mary, and .lune, and Tom, and Hob, and /uko here, and all the rest of you. You say you can't make a living, and thc truth is, you ?ire not trying to make ii living. You aro trying to make money by raising cotton to buy ft living with, und there is no ren Hon in that. Now, listen to me a little, for your own good. You and your's work ihc year round to make cotton and then you get your meat from ono thou sand miles nwfty, corn, flour, hay and so on come thc came way. Tho Yankees sell the'r grass ut ft good price, and we work r> irselvcsLo death lo kill grass. If you Wi I do as I tell you, insido of three years ev "ry ono of you will be easy." Several oi them spoke right up and said, "i.et us heir it. "Very well," says I. "(lo home, und to-night get your wives and children all around you ami tell thom just how you have been doing, and how it has worked. Then say, '1 pro pose to turn over a new leaf. First wo will not spend one cent we can help, not a cent tor tobacco, whiskey nor clothes mon than is necessary. Wo will get cows enough to give us plenty of milk and butter, nnd wo will attend to them, and wo will get come HOWS nnd pigs nnd look aber them. There will bo a good garden and plenty of chickens raised We will plant plenty of potatoes, corn, .and whatever is to li ve on. lu short wt will go in for making u living first, uni] something to sell next.' You will find nil will ngreo to it. Then just stick tr that for three yeats, and my word for it you will never say again that a living can't be made iu this country. Now i: you doubt it conic to seo mo, and I wi|! BIIOW you that it can be done.-Oben Farmer in Baptist Record. A Puzzled Grocer, A good old farmer from Virginie recently opened a grocery store in llalli more. Thc first day lie had about i dozen calls for oniouH, to which ho iuva riubly replied that ho lind nono in Htock The next day a gentleman cnt?rod nm said : "How do you sell your onions?" "Don't sell 'cm, sir." "Why do you show them, then?" "I don't, sir." The customer laughed and passed nui tho door. Now, tho old mau brought r largo supply of onions with him frou Virginia, and they were exposed in his shop for snic. This continued demain for onions puzzled him ; ho called lui wife aud they lind n long consultation about it. "I'll bo dingswizzled, Betsy, if I kim? what they mean by onions !" ?aid the old man nt the cud of tho consultation "Maybe they moan ingerns, Peter !' aaid the wife, a happy inspiration seizing her. "Well, I'll ax tho next ono if he moana ingerus, IJetay !" Almost immediately a mau entorei! and called for ouions. "Do you mean ingerns, Hir?" "No, sir, onions io what I want." "Haven't any, sir." A v?t?ran reporter passing by, seeiuc thc onions, remembered that he wanted a few for hash the next day, stepped in and called for ten cents worth of onion-, "Do you mean ingerns, air?-' "No, ah-, yes, yes, ingerns, sir !" While it is yet time we wish to urge upon farmers the importance of bavins a supply of good sweet fodder on hand during tho winter, for iLo cows, horse? and young cattle will appreciate it and pay well for all the oxpense it has beet to secure it. We prefer to sow it io June, though it may be sown earlier il desired ; but if not Bown before June (some farmers even sow as late as July) there ia not much pressing work on hand aa there is earlier in the season and thc work can then be done better and at les: expense. It is useless to attempt to raise n good crop of fodder on poor land, foi it must have rich Boil to produce heavily, and when good land ia further enriched with a goon top dressing of well decom posed stable manure the growth will Ix heavy and fine. The land should be well plowed and harrowed, and the core drilled in closo rows. Some planter plow the land and then BOW the corn first treating the grain to a coating of tai and ashes to keep the birds fron; taking it, the harrowing covering the corn nice ly. Several nights ago Colonel Leghorn wont hunting in company with several lawyers and a practical joking physician. Thc Colonel is very fund ot fishing, es pecially ?*t night, when bullhead's hunger. Just wait.' "Arc you ready togo, Colonel .'" asked the lawyer about hall an dour later. "No, I think 1 had a hite. This made him very angry and he swore hy all thc hill and creeks in thc world that lie would catch some thing <>r hurl somebody in thc attempt. Ile threw his hook far out into thc waler and sat down to wait lui the excitement incident upon a nibble. A log projec ted over thc water not Tar from where thc Colonel's hook awaited attack, and thu doctor delivering a whispered explana tion to thc otln r members ol' thc luck less party, crawled out on the log. Thc night was da* k, and thc ( Colonel could not discover that a cruel joke w as about to bc perpetrated on him. "1 have heard it said that there arc fish in this place as long as a man," said a lawyer. "Yes, and they are thc most eccentric fish alive," sunc one replied. "They almost pull a mau into thc water and it takes au expert to handle them. It is said that they begin to bite suddenly and seize a hook us fast as a man can throw in. The man on thc log reached out and look hold of tho Colonel's line. "I should like to see the Colonel hang one of those whales," said a lawyer. Thc doctor on tho the log gave the Colonel's line a vigorous pull. "Gee whilikcu Dan I" exclaimed the Colonel, jerking up his ?mic and sending his hook whizzing through thc air. "My (ieorge, I bung one as big as a mule !" "Let s go home, Colonel." "Homo the deuce!" indignantly ex claimed the fisherman, arranging his bait and spitting on Iiis hook. "Talk to u man about going home when he's having luck. Tho Colonel threw nt his lino again, and waited only a minuit;, vhcu tho man on the log seized tho lino mid jerked the pole from thc Colonel's hands. "firent Lord I" he exclaimed, grabbing after thc rod. "Great Ca sar," and iu ut temping to recover his tackle, he fell into thc creek with a splash. He scrambled out, with dillictilty, but he hail recovered his ro<l. "I never saw anything like it," ho declared. "Heady to go now, Colonel ?" "Ready to go ! You fellows must think that I'vo lost my senses. Leave herc when 1 can pull out fish by tho cartload ? Not much." He threw out again. Tho doctor took hold of tho line and pulled, but tho Colonel jerked so quickly and with such a vigor that tho line slipped through tho doctor's hand, burying thc hook in his thumb. "Oh, I've got him this limo. Oh, I've got him !" "Hold on there 1" yelled tho doctor. "Hold on you d-d fool ; its mo !" "Tho devil you say!" vociferated tho the Colonel, "You all this time, eh! Clot a sucker have 1 ? Como in! and he pulled thu linc. Tho doctor could not take hold of thc linc with his other hand, for he needed it in keeping his positiou secure. "For the Lord's sake, let up!" yelled tho doctor, "you are giving nie the lock jaw." "Como in! Como to law!" exclaimed the Colonel. "Biggest fish 1 ever caught, and I've got to play him. Odd zoo !" The doctor prayed. "For thc Lord's sake, let up," no supplicated. "Odd zoo, i'm playing him." Tho lawyers having enjoyed the joke und its amusing turu, prevailed upon tho Colonel to show some liltle mercy. "No gentlemen," he replied. "That Gsh has been tukiug my bait for tho last hour and now I'm going to enjoy mysoli with hun." Finally ono of thc lawyers cut tho linc. Tho doctor mado a rush for thu Colonel, but slipped from tho lng into the creek. Tho Colonel turned and ran away with a whoop. An exchange tells how a lucky phrase of army language brought a certain "hero" out of a doubtful hunting experience with success : A party of soldiers "out West," not having much to do, resolved to go bear hunting. They had been out about sixteen hours and had not seen a bear, and, being tired and hungry, returned to camp. On their arrival at headquarters they missed one of their companions, but thought nothing of it, ono of thom remarking : "He will return nil right." They made their camp fire and com menced their preparations for supper. They had some codec over tho fire; ono of them was slicing some potatoes, an other was stewing eomo moat, sud tho remainder Hat around tim fire wailing, when they wei o all startled by a terribie noise that ?cerned to como nearer tho camp. Suddenly the thickets parted, and in rushed tho missing man, his hair standing on end, bis face white, his hat gone, and his arms flying in the air, as if grasping for imaginary objects, and about two feet behind came a great black bear. Tho pursued soldier turned when ho saw the bear drop, and, looking at ono of them, said breathlessly : "Is he dead?" One of them naked : "Why didn't you shoot him, instead of running?" "What do you take mo for?" roplied the missing one. "Do you think I was such a d-d fool as to shoot him when I could bring him in alive?
