THE CONVICT S CHILD. It was early morning. "Is this the way, sir, to Sing Sing ?" "Yes," roughly replied a broad fated country-man, and passed on. It was afternoon. Thc child was Horne tt hat fragile in lier appearance. Her bonnet nus of broken straw, her shoes were much torn ; the sun played hotly on her forehead. She walked on ami on nn hour longer. "Is thia the way to Sing Sing, sir ?" " Ye*, little girl' hut what nre you going there for ?" Tho child trudged on, her lips quiver ?rig, but not deigning to answer thc pleasant-faced old man who had stopped (he jogging of his horse to note her hur ried manner, and who liked that little face, noxious and sad as tho expression was. The dew was fallen. Katie had fallen, too, almost. A rough stone by tho way, imbedded in moss, received her tired lit tle frame. She looked so worti and tired, sitting there, her tuugled hair falling on her hands that were clasped over her face. Hy the shaking of her frume the tears were coining, too, and she was bravely trying to hold them back. "Why, what is the dear little girl doing here?" came the exclamation from a pair of young lips. "A curiosity, I declare !" exclaimed a harsher voice,* aud Katie, looking up Gild denly, cowered away from the sight of the young lady and her agreeable looking companion. .'Whatever are you doing hero, little girl'.'" asked Noll Maywood, moving a little nearer toward the frightened child. "Going, Miss, to Sing Sing," said Kate. "Why, George! this child in going to Sing Sing-teu miles ofT. Child, did you know it waB so far oil'?" Kate shook her head, and wiped away the ?mt and heavy tears. "Why, you little goose, what are you going to Sing Sing for '.' Have yon had your supper?" Katie shook her head. "Have you hail any dinner?*' Again the child shook her head. "And no breakfast. Why, George, the poor thing must he almost starved !" "I should think so," mechanically re plied her brother, just recovering from a yawn, aud showing signs of sympathy. "Hook herc, what's your name? Well, girl, you must come up to the house and get something to eat. Follow me, and we'll take care of you to-night somehow, and sec about your going to Sing Sing to morrow." ;t " ! Katie followed. What a glorious vis ion hurst upon her view ! The palatial house; thu rocks reddening in tho low western sun ; the shining river ; thesigtiB of luxury on every hand. "Susan, give this child a good supper ; she is hungry and tired, too, I imagine. After that I will see what can bc done for her." Susan wure a mild face. Shu looked pleasant!; down nt tho poor tired little ono, nndt.'king herhand, which trembled now, lcd her hack into tho kitchen. Meanwhile her story,.or that brief part of it which wo know, was being told in tho drawing-room. The child nodded her head, or they thought MIIO did ; she wan ali convulsed with the reaction brought on by the ter ruination of her journey, "If it's Jim, he's a bad one," said thc jailer, in a low voice ; "he'? in irons this morning lur 'tempting to break jail; he don't deserve a little gal like that one, the ?Haili. Come, child, I'll go and find your father." He took Katie's shaking hand -with thc other she dashed the tears away as fast as they fell, it frightened lier al most into calmness, tn nee the ponderous dour at which the jailer applied, tho great key, ami the stillness of long,stono pas sages, the dimness thrown over all ; the constant succession of burs and bleak, black walls were terrible to II sensitive minti like hers. The jailer rapped at a cell-door. Slowly the Heure of a man; with a harsh, hair-cover ed face, appeared. "Herc's your little girl come to see you," said tho jailer. "Little girl ! hem ! you're green," said thc man, in glum accents. "I've got no little girl, or you wouldn't catch mo here." "Eather," said the childish voice. It sounded so Bweet, so childish, in that terrible prison. Hut ns the scowling face esme clo?? to the bars, tho child luid her head quickly in tile jailer's arrrn, half sobbing ; it wasn't him. "We'll try the next one." lie walked further, and spoke more pleasantly thiH lime. "Well, Bondy, herc is little Kate ; don't yoi* want to see her?" "Little Katie-" there was ii long pause. "I had a Kate once-not a little Kate; I broke her heart-dod pity me ! (?o on, lt can't bo for mo." Again the sweet voico rang out "Father." Tho prisoner came up to tho hors; a a youthful face, framed with light wavy hair-a face in which the bl no eyes look ed innocent-n face that it seemed a sin to couple with a foul deed, gazed out. It wat a child's earnest, pleading, tearful eyes ; a dark expression rolled like a wnve across his brow ; n groan came up from his bosom, and with a low moan he staggered against his bed,crying "Take ber away ; I can't stand the sight of anything pure like that'". . "Kalehad hidden her face a second time as she feebly cried : i ' "it isn't bim ;" so they kept on to the third cell. "Jim, here's a little girl-little Katie, your daughter-wants to see you." A stupid "what" carno from the bed; tho mau had probably just awakened. "Your little daughter." There was a sound of rattling ?rons that made the girl shiver. Dimly ap peared the face and outlines of n well made mau-the countenance handsome but evil. - He aoemed not to comprehend. But as fast as tho chains would permit him he came forward and looked oui at the anxious face below. Tho jailer V.T.-J calling thc child to con sciousness. "Shall we let hef'c?melhfo ?ho cell ?" asked the wardeu. t . Jim waa:dashlng his hand across his fate'. A smothered "Yes," issued from his lips. They opened the ponderous door-.and put tho child within. Her arms w?r? outstretched, his were, wide open, and they caroo together with a clanking souud-together about tho form of that poor little child. "Oh, father !" "Oh , Kwvio, Katie !" and~ then ibero was a quiet crying.
