Taming or tho Shrew
Opposite a Herald man, at a table in
a Cornhill restaurant, at dinner recently,
sat a man from Cambridge, who was a
native of New Hampshire. Meeting au
old acquaintance the conversation soon
turned on family topics and tho pair be
gan to talk about their former neighbors
in a most familiar way. '"Yes," remark
ed the Cambridge gentleman, "Sam waa
in many respects different from the rest
of the boys. You remember who he
married? Well, ? hen thc old mari, lin
father, found that ho was shiuiu' round
with her, he called him one day to the
baru and said : '.Sam, d'ye intend to
marry Beckie?' .Sam never said a word,
so the old man said : 'Me boy, ye know
all about them. I can't tell ye nothin'.
Ye know how thc sisters has turned out
and not one of them is now liviu' with
their husbands.' Sam was as mum ns a
pantomime and just as soon as he was
rendy him and Beckie got tied.
"Tiley lived on a farm, and everything
went on smooth for about a year, and it
came to hog biltcherin' time. Sum got
all ready to have thc usual party for tho
occasion, and just as he waa sharpen in'
up tho knives Beckie came nut and said :
'Sam, I'm goiu' home.' Sam protested
in his quiet way, but it was no use, so he
said he'd get a man to row her across the
pond. It was about a milo over. She
said : 'No ye won't ye'll row me over ye
self!' Sam told her he couldn't, and
Beckie fired up and said: 'Then I'll
drown meself.' Sam said he'd go with
her if she wanted to do that, HO the boat
was got ready, she got in, and they rowed
out till tho water was twenty feet deep.
Then Sam stopped and said : 'Well,
Beckie, this is a good place foi ye to
drown yeself !' She didn't ? nen her
mouth. He waited awhile and t* en said:
'Come, Beckie, I'm In a hun/ to get
back.' She never looked up. Sam put
down the oars, caught hold of her nr.il
titched her in. Shu grabbed for thr
oat, hut he wouldn't let her git near it.
When she was almost done out she said :
'Sam, iel me in that boat aud ye'll not
bear anything moro from me out o' tho
way.'
"So he pulled her in, and they went
back home. She changed bor clothes
and entertained the guest?. They're
now nearly eighty and you uover saw a
happier old couple-did you? I don't
think they ever spoke of that duckier'
since the day she was goin' to drown her
self."-Boston Herald.

Making Money Willi Money.
He was a sharp featured, shrew?leyed
old gentleman, and he sat in one ol the
Boston police stations recently, listening
attentively to a select assortment of j
yarns about counterfeiters, suggested 'JV I
the newspaper mention of ihe numerous ,
petty cases of thin nature pending before ?
the United Stales District Court. !
"Well, well," he remarked finally, with
a half sigh for the degeneracy of ihitoj
times, "roguery isn't what it Used to bc. !
I cnn remember when it look some ;
brains to make a good rascal. To work '
oil' thc hollis half-dollars, one dollars,
fives and so on tor tin- genuine thing is
all very well in its way, but what ?lo you
think of a Iel lew w ho gave aw ay square
money ?is counterfeit and make a lilli?!
fortune out of the business? Impossible?
Oh, no, when I was a detective, and that
not so imiuy years ago, I oatne in contact
willi just such a chap. You'll find thu
facts of the case in the court records. And
the way he did it was this : HA first sent
out to country postmasters ami others an
ingeniously gotten up circular, in which
be ollcred to supply them with -A remark
ably accurate counterfeit Jd bill, merely
as a curiosity. This would bu sent to be
paid lor when received by n good fl bill,
iII case the receiver cured to keep it ;
otherwise it was to be returned. 'I bero
were a good many responses to this cir
cular, bul the young man, instead of
sending out bud bills, inclosed genuino
ones in his Idlers, ami also u notico thal
he would be pleased to supply the sumo
at fob per hundred. Now the suscepti
ble postmaster carefully examined th?!
bill he bad received, showed il to his
friends, ?uni, perhaps tho cashier ?if thc
town bank, and every one, of course,
pronounced it genuine. So not a few
rural parties thought that 100 of them
would bo very handy in hurd limes, and
thu requisite $.'1U was forwarded. Ami
that waa always tho last heard of the ?ilU.
To be sure, some of the bait money was
lost, but not much. Tho victims could
not ?i^i'f? a complaint against tbs ?wh:
?l!"r without criminating themselves, and
so he flourished for sumo time. Hut at
length the United Stales authorities got
hold of the matter and arrested the
promising young scoundrel on au indict
ment for counterfeiting. What was his
defense? Why, he merely called atten
tion to lite fact that ho had not counter
feited at nil ; he had dealt only in genu
ino bills. Thc court could not hold him.
Subsequently, however, I believe thut he
was arrested and convicted, but on an
entirely different indictment."
