LEANNESS AN? MEANNESS. Are Lean Men More apt lu bc Crim?nala Thun fut Ones-An Expeii's Opinion. ''ul John li. Towers in Atlanta Court Hut i<.ti. "Leanness and meanness seem t<> go }uiiia in hand," remarked Colonel Tow ers, assistunt keeper of the Georgia poul toiltiary, yesterday. "There is not a man in tho penitentiary who weighs over two hundred pounds, lt is true that fat men are scarcer outside the penitentiary than Jean men are, hut Ibo pr (portions do not correspond. Fat men are rare, almost not to be found, in the tieorgia peniten tiary." "How do you explain UV "By the simple statement that fat men rarely commit crime. The idea ol a big, jollv fellow stealing anything or raising a row and killing somebody can't be con sidered. There ure, it is 'true, fat men who are mean men, and when you timi Mich a ono you lind au absolute tyrant, but bo is generally ns sharp as ho is fat und succeeds in escaping punishment if ho violates the law. 1 know a certain fat man w ho once had bis lingers on soine bedy else's eosfa ami who made it lively while it lasted, and I know another very fat nic.ii who luis lost all regard for every thing but money and beer, or perhaps something stronger. Ile is as uieuii ?is tho lcanust man that I over saw, but some of llicso days he will go oil suddenly in an appoplectic lit ami tho world w ill nave its revengo by refusing to shed a tear over biH cooling board." "I could go on ami dilate upon this subject for an hour," continued thc- colo nel meditatively, "but what's the use? It is asad, sad day for this country when fatness is discouraged ;" and tho colonel knocked the ashes out of his pipo and lilied her np again. "Now I would not like to unduly prejudice public opinion, bul I am ii lat mau myself ami know whereof I speak. In tho lirst place,'' and the colonel paused, struck a match on his boot heel and lit bis pipe again, "a fal man ls always contented-unless he is hungry. Feed him well, give him all t io sleep ho wants and I give you my word for it, he w ill never w ear shack los in a penitentiary. A man ? ho can laugh tho buttons oil'his cont, sleeps w ell, nut! a man w ho can do those two things (hum no murder, theft, robbery, and hears not false witness against bis "neighbor." "But, speaking of feeding well," con tinued thc colonel as thc frosty morning air came in at thc open window, lingered around tho doublo chin, and then carried away ibo white smoko from tho ponder ous briar-root pipo, "I say, speaking of feeding well, reminds me of ii singular sort ol fellow who was nt the coin let Citnpsol thc Mariette, 'ind North Georgia railroad. He was a lean sort of fellow - weighed about u bundled and twenty pounds and could never get enough to eat. Ho complained to everybody, tho guards, the overseers, tb" head men, the other con viet? and to me. Ono tiny two of thc convicts undertook to see if ho could get enough to eut. They gave him their dinners and tho fellow uto three din tiers Including his own, ut one silling mid then complained of the usual gun unos*. I was there one day and when Hie u-iuil complaint was made I ordered that they proceed at once to lill him up if it tonk all the provisions in that county. The cook was put lo work ami when tho fel low announced thal ho lind enough he had made away with linen pounds of bacon ami bread and peas in proportion. I mn sure Hist he must have eaten not less tuan seven or eight pounds of provisions." "Did he li\e?" "Yes, ho li ved and seemed to be emi ten ted, for ho never complained any more. Hut ho ls demi now. "Starved ?" "No. Ho knocked an overseer down tw ice withushtivel, and was getting ready to hit him again, when a guan? shot him." "But speaking of contentment," con tinued the colonel, "ibo worst case ol' contentment that I know of ls nt tho camps of tho Mariette, and North Georgia railroad. There ls an ?dd negro there who is too aged to work, and who stead fiwtly refuses a purdon. Ho ls in for life, anti says that he intends to stick it out. For live yeara at loiist he has not struck a lick, but simply sits around ut thu camp und when the camp ls moved he cutchos on unc? -oes with it. Sometimos tho men nt tho camp got up u forgetl purdon for him, hut ho declines with thanks. Ho is tho fun of thc camp, and nobody really w ails to seo him leave. Ho knows Un?t ho will bo fed and taken euro of there und it would bo an absolute hardship on him if ho were pardoned. Thu last time 1 saw him ho had a plug hat ami was us happy as a lord. I don't know what his crime was." "Hut speaking of crime," continued the colonel, "reminds mo of perhaps tho most poon liar caso In my knowledge of whore a man was as greedy fur other people's goods us iny already montionetl mnn was for tho camp rations. A young fellow-a lean fellow, nearly six feet high with grey eyos and black bair-was sont up for six years from Gwinott county for manslaughter. His name wns W. B. "Wood. Ono day ho escaped mid made his way toward Hall county. Every night that ho was out ho committed a burglary and was easily traoked by his thefts, and when caught was absolutely loaded down with articlos that ho bad stolen. The last time I saw him be was wearing a pair of boots that bo bad sto len while on his trip. But his short lib erty wan dearly bought as ho was given nu additional acuteuco of four y cary for his escape." Tho colonel gavo three puffs at tho briar-root and continued : "There is an other case that I could tell you about. A negro who was serving out bis timo at the coal mine, waa hostler und had charge of ibe uiu??s ??IU u??iie?s. His term ex pired and be wont home, but in tinco weeks ho had committed some crime, had been tried and was back at tho camp. He went to Captain Reose and complain ed that it was very hard that a man could not KO away two or three weeks without linville ovary thing to goto rack KO. His harness, his mules und everything had been neglected while ho was uway. Ho was given his old job and soon bail everything in good shape. That negro, I should say, hm! a keon sonso of tho hu morous." "Many boys in tho penitentiary ?" "Yes, there are n great many from six toon to twenty-ono. Thore uro sevoral as young as twelve Oenoral Grunt, a thir teen-year old boy, was discharged last yeer, and Wiley Johnson, a fourtnen yonx-old boy, is in for ten years for rupe. There aro several young ones In for Ufo 1 have lately bm) two very small boya pardoned My ideals thal the best way to treat small boys wno get into the pen itentiary is to lot them seo what it ls mut then pardon them out for the Brat of fense. I think that would have a better effect tbun being hnrsh." As tho reporter withdrew tho colonel W is e ivoloj e 11 i a cloud cf cur lng smoke that nearly hid him frow view, while the tobacco in tho briar root had nearly all gone to ashes._ POINTS FOR HUSBANDS.-Don't think that when you have won a wife, that you have won a slave. Don't expect yonr wife to honor and love you it you prove a mau unworthy of honor and love! Don't caresa your wife in public and snarl and growl at ber in private. This proves you a hypocrite. Don't forget tu .t if you both live as you should, that you will always be re spected as genteel persons. Don't lind fault with ber extravagance in ribbons, etc., until you have shut down on cigars, tobacco, wb ?key, etc. Don't think that your wife has less feeling than your sweethart had. Her relationship to you has simply changed, ''hot her nature. Don't expect your wife to have no feel ing?. Not to have is not to be human ; and besides, you were marrying a lady when you married her, and she married a gentleman. Don't make your wife feel that she is atr inenmbrance on you by giting crud ing!/. What abe need? give cheerfully, ns if iL was a pleasure to do so. She will feel better, and ea will you. - The comedy follows the tragedy. Ia the Montezuma (Ga.) Weekly what follows appeared the other day : "A young man In our town fell io love, bot was too Jmid to verbally esk bis Adored one for her band and so studied up a novel way to propose. A Strange Accident, Passengers wbo arrived in the city yesterday morning gave tlic particulars of an accident which occurred Tuesday morning nt fi :V> o'clock un the Northern Wisconsin divinion of the Chicago & Northwestern Hai I way, one milo Mouth of Ocotito, nod which is ?he most extra* or ii i nary in railroad history. The north hound passenger train, with a very large number of passengers, was running along at not less than twenty-live miles an hour when her locomotive exploded with gi gantic force. "J was seated io thc mook ine car, the third from the engine," said John I". Jerrard, a passenger, "and knew, hy the loud report and the heavy shock to the train, wh ii had happened. I was talking at the time with Mr. Whitney, of I'ensaukee ; springing up I said, "the : oiler has exploded !' and I expected in the next instant (hat the train would he smashed into kindling wood. At almost the same moment a mas, of rubbish from the explosion fell upon the top of the car, which rattled loudly, hut did no oth er damage. Of course, in a moment the sensation of danger was passed, as the Hain ran smoothly along, except a pecu liar ami unnatural sound from the front of the train, which seamed to move along without any percoptiblediminution of speed. I concluded that my imprts . ion that thc boiler ii., i exploded was er roneous, ns everything then seemed to he ail right, atid a gentleman remarked that a torpedo had probably been exploded under the train with a view to mischief. Hy this limo the train had ron down and crossed the bridge across the Oconto Iii vcr, when the brakeman suddenly ?et the brakes with gre'U exertion and brought thc train to a halt. Up lo this moment no one on the train knew what the actual situation was except the male agent and baggage men, and they wero unable fur some reason lo put ou thc breakes to stop thc train. The train waa finally brought to a stand still. Jr. waa then found thc four forward trucks of the engine were loaded handsomely upon the tender, which was intact. It was ev ident that not an individual on the train, as it stood there, was injured, and ibo fact is the majority of the passengers did riot know that anything had occurred until they were tobi, as the report was not heard very far back and many were asleep, ilut the engineer and fireman lhere was but one voice, 'they are demi.' Home of the passengers and the trainmen ran back, aiui were utterly amazed to lind them standing by the wrecked en gine, but lillie the worse for the dreadful shaking up. After a careful examination of the whole ground !'ie following conclusions were reached by me and many others : First, that the explosion hud been most terrific; that al the time of its occur rence the engine was lifted from its con nection willi tho tender and violently wrenched clear of it; lhat nt the same moment the cowcatcher was thrown downward in a matter of course, ami a* was shown by three tics being rooted up and broken in two near tho center, and at the same point by the side of the truck lay the nose of the badly demoralized cowcatcher. This must have occurred HS the engine was thrown forwnrd in the air willi the most terrific f jrer, ns was fully established hy its being hurled 180 feet forward ami along u little to the right of the track before it struck the ground, where it buried itself half out of sight in tho mud. Of course this thirty-ton mass nf iron must have turned a com plete somersault in the air, nt which time the forwurd trucks were dropped upon tl " 'ender. There they are now lying. Tin- grass and bushes arc blackened and dead by the escaping steam underneath the track where the engine flew through thu air. The inigo machine took itself ?ind nil its immense rubbish, the result of the explosion, absolutely out of tho way and left a clean track for the train tb puss along, ami, strange to say, tho rails nt tho point of the brr.kcn tics were scarcely disturbed. Hut the fireman and engineer were carried along in the cub nod landed with it, or very near. One pair of trucks on the mail enr jumped ihe track at thu point where the explo sion occurred and ran in that situation ono mile, passing over the bridge at the Oconto Uiver in that way ; ami another odd freak, passing a switch a moment be fore tlie train was stopped they ran on ngain, and no groat llamare was done ex cept io tear ott' the heads of all tho spikes from one aide of the rail for the whole distance, breaking nearly all the bolts which connect the cuds ol the rails together, nil this without ono life being Inst or any one seriously injured. Who can cite anything ?ike this in railroads to-day ?"-Milwaukee Sentinel. JOKE ON THE DOCTOR.-There was .in eager and excited, as well as anxious, throng of heirs gathered in the mansion of nn old French lady recently deceased. She had left to her physician, "whoso en? lightened care mid wise prescriptions had made her live so long," the contenta of tho old oaken cheat. The heirs were naturally indignant; the doctor much elated at the thought of the treasures contained in the quaintly carved old ehest. They gathered about it, waiting for the lawyer to como with the key. At Inst he arrived and handed the key to ihe doctor. Ile unlocked the chest and opened it. The sunlight fell upon its glistening contents, consisting of the un opened bottle.') of medicine which he ?md prescribed for her the previous twen ty years. - "You write a beautiful hand. I wish that I had such a hand," said Mr. Flasher to a lady clerk at the hotel. "Am I to consider this as a proposal ?" asked ihe bright lady. "Well-sir-yes-If my wife is willing to let me off," replied the accompli uh i d Fin-her. - If the wood is in a large piece, the convex or hollow side should he steamed or moistened a little, and then laid ou a dry floor, holding it down with a smooth, Hat hoard, upon which weigh ls are placed When quite dry it will be found to have regained its original shape.
