The Citatici Academy. COI.UMUIA, August 2. The Hoard of Visitor? of the South Carolina Military Academy at its meeting yesterday elected Capt. Wm. Cain a pro fessor in the Academy, and Mr. Henry T. Thompson assistant profosor. Professor Wm. Cain graduated at Uilisboro,' N. C, Military Academy when Col. C. C. Tew, of South Carolina, was ite Superintendent. After that he pursued his studies further, making himself a thorough mathematician and practical engineer, lie has been engag ed in work on railroads and bridged in i - State for a numberof years, and af ter hia service of sis years in the < 'andi na Military Instituto as professor ol mathe matica and engineering, he returned to his profession ofcnginecriiiga year or two ago. lie is now at the head of an im portant railroad survey in North Caroli na. He is thoroughly versed in ti e the ory and practice of his profession, and there is no able mathematician or more Accomplished engineer in tin-South. He is an author and frequent contributor to scientific joui liais in the line of his jiro fession, and is considered a leading think er in that department, even in the .-cien tifio circles of the North, lie isa Chris tian gentleman, a military man, with military training and instinct, and at the Hamo time a man of progress, keeping pace with the strides of science in this nge of rapid advancement. V. Thu board considered u large number of (about 110) applications for benefici nry cadelships, and passed a good many of them. These examinations were di I cet cd to the complican!.*) with the gener al requirements as to physical condition, age and pecuniary circumstances, the idea being to carry out what was con ceived to lie the spirit of the law, that is, to extend the beneficiary aid only to lho?e who both deserve and need it. Where there w/'.s reasonable ground to suppose that the parents of tho applicant had means to educate him the applica tion was disapproved. The approval of the application for beneficiary cadetship by tho board ga\o (lie applicant the privilege io go bel..re an examining boar.I that will sit in each county. About forty applications for pay cadet ships, were examined and approved. It is expected to open the Academy with 1 0 cadets on the first of October. A love for the lesthetic did not flourish in those days, at leust not in Mexico, and I was glad to hide my legs undor tho table, and for tho rest of the evening, I wrapped a munitila around my limbs. I was too uncomfortable to resume my love-making to Isabella; be sides, she laughed whenever she looked at me. I slept there that night in room on tho ground floor overlooking wide meadow. Thinking tho fresh air would restore my breeches to their nor mal condition I took them off and spread them on the grass, aud then jumped back through tho window and went to bed. a tho morning I arose enrly and looked for the cherished garments. A dreadful sight met my gaze. Two cows wero con tentedly breakfasting oil' them and only portion of the scat at the band with tho buttons remained. I did not know what to do and lay iu bed waiting for tho ap pearance of one of tho inhabitants of the house. Presently Isabella's futlicr went past my window. I hniled him and told him my plight. He laughed and said he would fetch mo pair of his trousers. Now I am tall and spare ; my Mexican host was short and enormously fat ; tho trousers ho produced mo wero Sat cheti in every direction with cloth of ivers colore. Imagine my appearance when I put them on. Tho reel of the house had been told of my misfortune, so when I left the room I found all the men and girls in tho placo, including Piabella, awaiting my debut. I shall never forget the wild yells of laughter which greeted me, and it struck mo that Tabella laughed louder than the rest, I made a rush for tho stablo, hastily sad dled my horse and, without a word of farewell, rodo off aa hard as I could. I never went to see Isabella again.
