Tho Trouble of being n Woman. Upon the .vhole, it is a dreadful thing to boa woman, and do thc business up in good shape. In the first place, you've got to look well, or else you're ...obody. A man may be homely and still be popular. Whis kers cover up thc most of his face, and if ho has got a large mouth, nobody mis trusts it ; and, if he wrinkles bad on his forehead, his friends speak of his many cares, and of his thoughtful disposition, and tell each other that his wrinkles are lines of thought. Lines ol'thought in deed! when in all probability, his fore head is wrinkled by thc habit he has got of scolding at his "wife when the coffee isn't strong enough. A woman must always be in good ol der throughout. Her hair must he friz zed and banged as fashion demands and she must powder if she has a shinning skin ; and she must manage to look sweet, no matter how sour she may feel, and -he must hang just so. and her laces must be always spotless, and her boot buttons all in place, and finger nails clean, and she mu.-n't whistle nor climb fences, nor -tone eat i, nor swear when hhc ls mad. .She can't go out alone because ladies must be protected. Sho can't go any where when it rains because her bair won't stay crimped, and she'll get mud on her petticoats, and things. She can't be a Freemason, because sho would tell their iccrets, and everybody would know all about that goat atid that gridiron. She can't smoke because it wouldn't be feminine. She can't go courting becauso it is unwomanly. But HIJC must get mar ried before she is twenty-li ve, or every body will feel wronged. People will sigh over her, and wonder why it is that the men "don't st em to take," and all the old maids and widows will smile signifi cantly-nnd keep quiet. Oh, these smile-, and these significant looks! They are ten times worse than open slanders ! It is a terrible tiling to bc- an old maid -terrible! Everybody knows it is, and tho women who are married to drunken husbands, and who manage to quarrel with them bix days out of thc seven, will groan in agony of spirit over tho s'nglo womau, and call her that poor old maid ! A wotnon must marry rich, or sho doesn't marry "well." To marry well is tho end and aim ot a woman's existence, judging from the view which people in gcnral take of thia matter. it is everybody's business who a wo man marries. Tho whole neighborhood put their heads together and talk over tho pros and cons, and decide whether she is good enough for him. And they criticiso the shape of lier nose, and the way she does up her hair, and relato anecdotes of how lazy her grandfather was, and how her Aunt Sally used to sell benns and buttermilk. A woman must wenr No. 2 boots on No. 3 feet, and she must manngu to dress well on scvonty-iivo cents a week ; and sho musu't bo vain, and she must bo kind to the poor, aud go regularly to the sew ing-society meetings, and bo ready to ..Ire dolls, make aprons and tidies for church fairs. Sho must bo a good cook, and she must bo ablo to "do up" her husband's shirts so that tho heathen Chinese wash erman would groan with envy and gnash his teeth with tho snme unholy passion, at sight of them. She must always have tho masculine buttons in tho family sewed on ?o Hint they never will como oil' while in uso, and sho must keep tho family hosiery so that nobody would mistrust that there werctocs insido of tho stockings when they aro on. Sho must hold herself in continual readiness to find everything hor husband lost-and a man never knows where any thing is. Ile will put his boots carefully away on tho parlor sofa, and when he has hunted after them hnlf an hour, ho will appear to his wife with n countenance like that of tho avenging angel, and de mand to know "Whal iu tho thunder sho has dono with his boots ?" She trust shut nil the doors after her lord and master, and likewise tho bureau drawers, for a married man never was known to shut a drawer. It would bo ns unnatural as for a hen to go swimming for recreation. Sho muHt go to beti first in cold weath er, BO as to get tho beti warmed, lier husband, if ho be a wiso man. never asks her tn do this, but ho si ls up "to finish u piece in the paper," and waits while sho gets the sheets to a comfortable tempera ture. Ah, there aro a good many tricks in tho trado of what is called living togeth er! A woman is expected to take caro of tho baby, oven after tho first infantile wouder multiplies into n round dozen. And if ho doubles up with tho colic, or tho trials of cutting teeth, necessary evils of tho mumps, and measles, and whooping cough, and scarlet fever, and rash, throat distemper, and short sleeves, aud baro legs, and pins sticking into him and too much caudv atid n bad temper, why her husband tolls her that "he does wish she'd try and quiet tho baby !" And ho says it justas if ho fully believed that she alone was responsible for its being in existence ; and as if he thought sho was considera bly to blame for it, too. And when sho has tho heaadcho, no body thinks of mi tiding it ! A woman is always having tho headache! And if ano is "nervous enough to fly," nobody shuts tho doors any easier ou account of it, or tucks ho. upon tho lounge with u shawl over her, or coddles her to death, like, mau has to bo coddled in such cir oumstanoes. We might go on indefinitely with tho troubles a woman brings ; and if there is a mau in tho world who thinks n wo man baa au easy timo of it just let him pin on a pound of fulsu hair, nnd get in side a new pair of corsoia, and put on a pullback ovorskirt, and bo a woman him self, and Beo how ho likes it. A NEW ENTERPRISE.-Commissioner Butler has on exhibition at his office an interesting collection of the products ol tho common pine, resulting from a now process which has boon invented and is now in successful operation. Tho pro cess, known as Stanley's, is a compara tively simple and inexpensive one, con sisting of reducing (or burning) in a retort ordinary cord wood, by which various substances of important commer cial value have been obtained. From a singlo cord of wood, which cost $3.f>0, thus treated there has resulted : 15 Gallons spirits turpentine, worth..,.i.? 7.f)0 80 Gallons pino wood oil, worth... lfj.OO 150 Gallons pyroligneous acid, worth. 15.00 50 Bushels superior charcoal, worth. 5.00 $33.50 A retort with all appliances for reduc ing two cords of wood per day eau bo managed by a singlo hand, and will cost about $2,000. One is now in successful operation at Augusta, from which the samples shown havo come, and others aro being erected throughout tho pine region. If all, or even a reasonable portion, of tho results claimed for tha process can bo realized, thero aro "million* in it" f>r our pine barren section. A company is in process of formation in Columbia.- Columbia HcgUler. A Half Dollar Trial. Mr. Ernest King, editor of tho Fall River (afass.) Sun, thus discourses upon the merits of St. Jacobs Oil : "Suffering with rheumatic pains I was Didymus as to remedies. I read of St. Jacobs Oil ??nd said herc goos for a half dollar trial, x bought a bottle and before it was hall used the screw-wrench pains had gone and troubled mo no longer." Tho Hon, Jlr. Lot, of Sodom. Now if wc lc' (bc I-iOrd chooso for us j iie will choose better than wc can our selves. Hut Lot wanted to choose for himself. I will venture to say, when he left Abraham, if you had talked to him about going to Sodom he would have said: "O, no! Go down to Sodom? Do you think I would lake my wife into Sodom? Do you think I would take my children down into Sodom-into that great city with all ?ts temptations ? Not i !" But he pitched bu tent toward Sodom-tie looked toward the city-and it was not long before his business took him there. Ile went down the re perhaps lo sell bi? cattle, and fourni a good mar ket. Some of llie leading men wanted Ililli to go down there. Ile could make a great deal ol money -could make it fas ter. When a man pitches his tent before Sodom and looks in it won't he long be fore he gels in there. Hi? business took him lhere. "Busi ness must be attended to- a man must attend to bis bus'iuess, you know." "But then it will be ruin to your family." "< ?, well ! I am going lo get money and then get out of it. When I gel enough to re tire I will move hack, and live on the plains of Abraham. Hull must attend to my business fir-t." Many a man pun business befcrc bis family. Business must bc attended to, let ihcconsequonet * be what they will. In thc night of thc world Lot wait one of the most successful business men of all Sodom. If you had gone in Iber?; a little while before destruction came upon it and inquired about the ??lace and its leading men, they would have told you thal Lot, thc nephew of Abrahan!, was one of thc most successful men in all Sodom. He held ollice. Wc find him hitting at the gate, and that is a sign that lie was an nllicer. Perhaps they made him a judge-a good, high-sound ing name, ".Judge Lot." lt is a good title. Tim world honored him ; Sodom honored him ; they liked him very well. Then be would have, reasoned in this way ; "Don't you seo I have got an influ ence by coming down here." He was a man of great influence in tbo hight of tho world-immense influence. They would have told you that be was one of thu most influential men in ull Sodom. He owned, perhaps, tho best corner lots, and he may have hud his name on them. If they had had a Coiigtess in those days he would have been a very popular mau to send to Congress. He would have been "The Hon. Mr. Lot, of Sodom." Ile was a man ibo world delighted to honor ; for it delights to honor tbnt kind of a man-a man of great influence. But I want to call your attention to ono thing-ho was ibero twenty years and never got a convert. That is a tuan of influence ! Look around and" see where the worldly Christians are. How many souls are they winning to Jesus (.'brist '/ Are they the men that are building up Christ'? kingdom ? 1 tell you those men aro doing moro to lear it down than any other class.-I). I,. Moody, WHAT'S THAT FOU?-He drifted into Phil McGovern's saloon in San Francisco tho other evening, wiped his forhead, felt all around in his pockets and said willi a pleasant smile: "Well, as it seems 1 have j md ono tencent piece left to day I'll take a drink." When the four fingers of Antioch nervo-tnuglcr had been secreted in his re motest recesses, Ibo consumer fumbled among his keys and laid something on tho counter. Aa be did HO ho started and said with u look of amazement : "Groat Set t ! just look at that !" ."I sec it," said tho barkeeper, scornful ly regarding tho alleged dime. "It's n suspender button. What of ii?" ' Well, I didn't look at il before. I just felt it in my pocket, and I'm blamed if it didn't fool me. Ahem. I suppose you'll have to nut this drink on ice until tomor row. I'll drop in mid lix it." 'Oh, of cottrso you will. Here, take this," and tho cock-tail retailer banded over n needle and thread. "Whnt's that for ?" "Why, for you to sew on that button right now. Otherwise, you might make a mistake again this evening somewhere else. Just sew her on strong." But tho party with tho button was very much instilled, and went out swearing that they didn't know how to trent ono of tho most prominent citizens in thc pioneer business, nohow. No TIMK TO TULL A LIE.-Josse C. had tho reputation of being tho "biggtat liar" in Georgia, and was never known to como out behind. Ono hot day Hill H. sat on the shady side of his barn. After dinner ho saw Jess riding in great haste toward town. Hill hailed him and went to the ??*U'\ Jess asked what bc wanted. "Stop anti tell us a big lie," said Bill. "No limo for lying now," snid Jess. Your uncle Soil died suddenly nu hour ugo, and I am going for tho Coroner and a collin." And on he went. Bill ran to tho house and told his wife. She gather ed up tho children. Ho hitched tho horso to tho wagon, loaded in bis family and posted off four miles through heat and dust to undo Soil's. On arriving ho found tho family and two ceighbora in tho large kitchen, undo Soil buried-to the eyes in half a big watermelon. Thc sur prise was mutual and explanations fol lowed. "Well," said Bill, "I asked Jess for a big lio,and not only got it, but was fool enough to belicvo it. I wouldn't believe him again if I knew ho was dy ing.''-Marietta Journal.
