Xcgru "Spirituals." Lillie E. Burr, in Uhiitiiaii Union, Although it is brooming unfashionable among tho negroes lo sing "spiritual," because so many now can "sing out ob de booie," us they term tho usc of the Hymnal, still, in ail great events of their lives, joyful or sorrowful, they fly to the old "spiritual-," which were thc strength aud comfort of their race during their days of bondage. I" Carolina and Al? bame the 'spiritual '-till holds its ground; but ia Georgia and Virginia it ii last dis appearing. True, every negro knows them, and n-t -i them in tho sacred hours of those joys and sorrows ley .:d the in termeddling even of dear friends ; for when tiouble or death enters the home the "spiritual" is ns much the mother tongue of thc negro heurt ns the Psalms of David are our own spiritual voice. A negro may have been to college, he may he, in the extremest sense of which he is capable, ail he defines by his favorite word, "stylish," yet when thc billows and the waves of a sea of sorrow go over him lie forgets his Hymnal and is sure to seek comfort in one or other of the following "shouts" : "I>e water de< p, do water cold. Nobody lure to help tue ! Dc road am rocky, rough and sleep, Nobody here to help me! " Do, Lord, Nobody here to help mel" . ?*??.. "My ?Jod deliver Daniel from de lion's den, Jonah from dc body ob de whale. Three Hebrew children from de furnace, And he'll deliver me ! A nd he'll deliver ino ! Shout ! De Lord Cod deliver Daniel, And he'll deliver mc!" This is the form in which this favorito "about" iJ sung in Virginia; but in .South Carolina 1 heard it a? follows : "De King east Daniel in dc lion's den ; Ob. bow could Daniel pray? All God's (billen hover round To hi ar what Danie) ' ay. The good Lord deliver Daniel, And he'll deliver me." lu the prayer meetings and experience meetings the "spirituals" and ".-bouts'' are always sung, ?ind that with an ear nestness and pathos they never exhibit when using "de printed word-.'' For thc^e hymns of the race were never com posed; they sprung warm and glowing from hearts, attaining in great extremi ties lo heights aud depths above and be low all thc liile^ of human joy and sor row. While in .South Carolina I especial ly enjoyed tho little "shouts." They are nearly always itt a joy lui key, and rarely contain more than one verse, which the happy singer would go over just as a bird goes over bis few wild notes. Often I have watched the men and women, with their hoes over their shoulders and their htone water-jars on their heads, hurrying lo the fields al early dawn, or sauntering home at sunset, ?md throwing out and upwards their very hearts in some jubi lant little "shout," such tts this: "If 1 had tie faith ob wrestling Jacob, Jacob in de daj.- ob old ! 1 il climb tr> de top ob dc starry ladder, And shout in tlc streets oh yo M I" A beautiful peculiarity of thc "shouts" is their almost universal use at the bed Bide of thc dying Christian. One night ci)ming through that part of Manchester, Va., in which thc negroes mainly live, I noticed a crowd galilercd about a door, , and passing through it into a humble little cabin I found a young man whe had just been frightfully and fatally in jared in the mill where ho had worked A house of mourning'.' No, indeed There was not a sorrowful face in tilt group around his bcd. His obi mollie! sat holding his hand, and she was tv calm and happy ns though no parti nj waa at hand. When her son had taket the .Sacrament it was her voico that firs joined his in the "shout" through wbicl he expressed his final Victory: "My soul ! my soul ! My soul leaning on de Lord ! Eat and drink, stop and think. How close you stand oil ruin-!' brink. My soul ! my soul ! My soul luuning on do Lord ! Shout ! Hallelujah I" All Christians profess to regard deatl ns "gain ;" but ino negro really does HI hold it. This young fellow, struck dowi in thc very noon of vigor and life, nbso lutely rejoiced that hts warfare was s soon over. He shook hands with all ii thc room, aud many of them, with a sir.: plicity of faith child like in its tender ness and beauty, gave him messages I their own departed friends. "You'll look for my papa aud brothers Daniel," said u young girl to him, "am tell thom I never forget." .TH tell them, sure; I'll tell them yoi aro on de road, stepping clear out to wards de Kingdom, ho said, as con fi dently aa a child going homo speaks c tho members ^f its own family. Then h broke into "shout" which I aove heard before, but which was evidently . familiar one, for thc company, tu stion| joyful voices, sung it over and over ns went slowly through tho Bympathizinj groups that filled the street :" "I diop Ibis body by de river ; I drop it in de ground ; New feet de Loni done give me, To wunder Cannan round. O, Canaan ! Canaan or. de heavenly side Heavenly side of Jordan !" Going home from that strange seen I saw a negro woman sitting on a dooi step, swaying backward and forward an Binging to a little baby in her arms; am the lullaby was so sweet that I cannc help but Hoe it down here, though it cai lay no claim to being n "spiritual :" "De Lord bless do lillies. Dc Lord bless de wheat, De Lord bless de little chillen, Dat blessing am so sweet, Dat blessing nm so sweet 1" Two more "spirituals" hold very prom inent places in my memory, both of thet being baptismal spirituals, or rather, on being n spiritual and the other a "shout. The shout I heard first in Talladega .lr While in that place I heard that .nor were two men in the jail under sentenc of death for murder, and that neither c them had anv knowledge of Christ. Th SherfiT, Mr. Edwards, courteously gav me free access lo them, and for severe weeks I read to them ?lally the Gospel c Jesus crucified. At length they desire to be baptized ; and it was a baptismt ceremony I shall not soon forget. About two hundred yards from the ja1 was one of those beautiful natural spring which abound in that State, and her Mr. Edwards marched tho two men bant cuffed togother. When they reached th water bc removed the handcuffs, and th ceremony of immersion was performed i an intense silence, but as soon ns the: feet left the water 'Se crowd assemble broke into the "shout' - "Oh do healing waters flowing. Here I is, Lord. Hero I Is 1 Oh do healing waters flowing. Ho dip my soul in do healing water Dtrday when do water flow. Shout 1 Jesus Christ done bin hero 1 Done bin here, done bin here ! Jesus Christ dono bin hero ! Done bless my soul and gono." Whenever they reached the wort "Jesus Christ done bin here," they a shook, "hands with his or her ueighbo and tho emotion waa so genuine and , contagions that it touched every h?' The Sncriff Bbowed a trait of human co iidenco that few Would have dared, ar said nt the closo, "Now toys, you car. f back to jail without bandenfls. I'll tru you. You are Christians now." Ar. so they, returned uumnnnclcd, and sin; iug\r.s they went, and sovoral hours aftc ward I heard them eisging in tlioircclls "Jesus Christ done bin hero, Pone bless my soul and gone." Tho other baptismal song I heard sui on tito banks of tho .Tames Uiver, by so tiff* hundred people, after a big bapti in It has, as all Virginian spiritaa ha. j, au attempt nt pc?'icsl constru lion ; but I rio not think these hymns a ?ver improved by such cilbrht. This spiritual was sung with n prodi gious enthusiasm and by hundreds of voices, hut did not move me like lite Ala bamian : '..Shout ' Jesus Christ dom bit) here'! Done bless my soul and gone.'' Hie Persimmon and (he Opossum. The Philadelphia Pren? irreverently calls the uohlc fru??, tho date plum, or persimmon, called for siiort in Virginia und North Carolina, the dioapyros Vir ginia, the 'biinniou, and describes it as worth less, worse than a weatbesfield on ion, and ranks it ai tho meatiest fruit in (he world, Thia is mere Northern prep udice, doubtless a remainder of n tvur passion. If thc editor ol'tiie Pn*t, dur ing the war, ere thc ir usia hud nel lowed the persimmon and softened tho? asper ?ties which cause thc face of '.he eater to resemble the countenance *->f a whistling master, escaped from prison and endeav ored to sub-i-t during August opon the "po?sum fruit, wc can understand his prejudice and the sectional bi Hernes which still lingers under his tongue. His attack is u gross 'njusticc t'< the negro, and to the ?'arty which cannot subsist without thc negro and can't have the negro without thc persimmon. Without 'pt--sum fruit no 'possum i< p ?db!r. If there were no possum lhere could bc mi 'possum d"g. It is well known where the negro ha - ! cen most Duccessfully cultivated that no reliable, uhstduciblt '?ra! colored voter was ever ?cen except in conjunction willi a 'pos sum dog. Persimmon, 'po?stim, pon min dog and rural colored voter are all connected together in au indissoluble chain of cause and effect. Mot out the persimmon and away go all thc depend ent effects ol'persimmon, and with ''?em Lhc Republican party ol'thc South. The dioapyros Virginianus is not ofit self tu he despised even by the pampered Anglo-Norman American. In thc latter port of Noven iier und early part of De cember when the Autumn Irons have drawn its puckering qualities, when it liss mellowed at thc touch of Winter, when its hitter streets have candied and crystal i zed and tho fruit has acquired a d ite like consistency and llavor and a sugared mealiness of expression, ii rivals lhc dale in excellence and in nutritious qualities, lv.cn when it i? full rip1! and luscious, when the acid hiller Inn just been shaded hy carly frosts into a juicy sweetness, it melts softly and sweetly in the mouth. Thal ho is attached to it and owes his origin lo it, ennobles the 'possum; the negro exhibits n nico taste in bis affection for 'possum and it is to tho credit of lhc 'possum dog that he loves the very ground the possum walks on. In those frosty Autumn limes, when the fields .ire brou n and the golden rod rivals the frosts with ita shedding down or still defies thc frosts with i'- gulden hlossutns, when the sassafras leavca gleam in thc fields, thc thickets are al?ame with the red sumach, thc Hicko ries in tho forest arc yellow and tho ma ples dressed out in red and gold, when ihn last lingering insects arc chirping their sud death notes, when ont lingers in the woods and fields hy day, steeped in the delicious melancholy, "thinking of Ibo days that uro no moro.'' what is more delightful than lo gladden the night with loud hall'-; inspired by tho hunt and "mnonshiuu" such as befits thc night ; to thread with eager step tho groves where tho luscious persimmon "Waxing over-mellow, Drops In thc silent Autumn night." To follow Undo Tobe as he cheers old Tigo on tho silent trail, lo strain for thc hoarse tones which announce that "Tigo's treed," to prevs cn toward the hollow treeing hark of old Tige, lo swear al the bramble, or lin- prone tree top, which catches tho cager step, to reach the persimmon tree and soe thc very 'possum hang between thc hunter and the full-orbed moon, to wait in breathless suspenso until Uncle Tube has soalcen thc noble marsupial loose, to see him fall to be shaken by old Tige, in vain playing 'possum, "quite chap fallen," arc aporte for which we are in debted lo tho persimmon. If any sport excels these il is on the morrow night, when thc one night s frost has mellowed the gume, to sil by tho open chimney and see him grinning from out his gar nishment of 'weet taters," wailing and begging to bo washed down with "stone fence," all followed hy it burnt offering of Icinnikinick in n powatnu, or old cob. It is quite evident to us that thc Phila delphia editor has never pondered thc persimmon question in all its bearings political, econ?mica), social and gastron omical, with its concomitant, 'possum, possum dog, field snort, stono fence and laked taters.-Nashville American.
