H. von Hasseln, of Anderson, Notaries Public. Susie Dodd, the only daughter cf Mr. J. J. Dodd, a bright child of ll or 12 years of age, died on Thursday morning last from hemorrhage of tho lungs. There have been about $2.(300 paid in this County nineo Christmas on thc Savannah Valley Railroad, leaving still a lnrgc bal ance due by the taxpayers. The finest pair of mules brought to this place in a long timo were sold to Capt. W. T. Dean, of Varennes township, by Mr. Jim Catlett, of Tennessee, on Monday. In consequence of tho bad condition of the roads there has been very llttlo cotton in town this month. The price has declined from 111 to ll cents the past week. Messrs. R. B. A. Robinson and J. G. Clinkscalca, of this County, have been ap pointed aides-de-camp on the staff of Gov. Hagood, with the rank of Lieutenant Colo nel. Capt. John Dickinson, of Hopewell, one of thc ago! and most highly respected citi zens of the County, gives it as his opinion that the present winter has been thc sever est since 1835. Lfr. J. A. The people of Belton turned over a new leaf at the beginning of the new year, and the first good thing they did was to elect a "dry ticket" and closa up the bar-rooms. The temperance wave is gaining force. The merchants are receiving and storing away large quantities of commercial fertil izers in anticipation of a good business in that line this spring. If they are disap pointed it will be thc first time in our recol lection. Six moie persons joined the Temperance Division last Thursday night, among them our two "devils." Every person now con nected with the INTELLIGENCES, including the colored pressman, is a member of a temperance order. The regular quarterly meeting of Pomona Grange of this County will bc held at An derson at ll o'clock a. m. on the first Satur day in February next. Besides the election of officers other very important business will be before the Grange. A commercial reporter who was in town a week or ten days ago. in conversation with one of our citizens, said that he found tho merchants of Anderson in better standing financially than those of any other town of the same size in tho South. Mr. George McClure lost $120 in town hast Saturday, but was fortunate euough to re cover the entire amount from John Davis, a colored man, on Wednesday, who claims to have found the money on the nubile square Saturday afternoon. The entertainment of the Palmetto Min strels on Tuesday was well attended consid ering 'ho inclemency of tho weather. The performance wa* very good, tho apprecia tion' of whi_h by the audience was fully attested hy frequent applause. The WilllamBton Femalo College opens on Monday, 7th Febrnary. In point of merit it is the equal of any Female Collcgo in South Carolina, ond wo hope wi.ll con tinue to prosper. Dr. Lander may well be proud of his institution of learning. Tho Edgcfield Advertiser estimates the cotton crop of that County at 40,000 or 45, 000 bales, and says that at least 2,000 of that amount is yet in tho field. If wo thought the farmers of Anderson County were that lazy we would bo ashamed to tell it. Hon. B. F. The town of Laurenavillo on Tuesday of lost week elected a "dry ticket" by a large majority, and the Herald is jubilant over thc result. KDITOK: It ia respectfully suggested th&t th? opiulon of our Town Warden re ferred to in your local last week, in regard to tue effect of advertising orr taxpayers, is liable to several objections. First. An Increase of sixty per cent, will increase tbe tax levy in tho same ratio., and the taxpayer pays the ?ame at last. Second. Thc cost of advertising our tax payers will be large, and increase Ibo taxes tb at much more. Third. It advertises to tbe world the pov erty of sonn? of our best citizens, who, with out any fault ol their own, ar*" made to feel keenly ihe publication of their names sido by side with their moro fortunate neigh bors. Fourth. It subject* the more wealthy to unjust criticism from the fact that their wealth i* always ovor estimated by others; and they generally own bank stocks, which are returned by the banks, and are holders of Slate bonds and United Str.tea bouda, not subject to taxation. Fiflh. It may cause 6ome of our good cit izens to estimate their little ' < Id's gooda ot high rates to cover their infortunes and mortification, and thus do themselves and families injusticr. Hirth. It is questionable not only as to thc propriety of such publication, but per haps the legal right to expose to th.- world the private u fui ra of the citizens and the use of their names thus publicly without their consent. Lastly. It is suggested that the best remedy for the evil complained of is to bring to bear economy in administering the affairs both of the town and State, and have low taxa tion, so that tho fear of frauds and perjuries may be without cause; and ihe good time again come, as before the war, when the taxpayer can gs to the receiver and give in his property, pay his taxes without con plaint, or scud it to the collector ry his little boy with tbo amount on a slip of paper, and do away w t x thc army of officers with the array of expenses now attending it.
