3?.aler?n Kntrtligrucev. LOCAL NEWS. W. \V. KEYS, W.u. EDITOR. Gratifying I'jonin-ttty. Tho increase in (be business oi Anderson this year over that of uny previous year in tlie history of thc town is plainly percepti ble to even the most casual observer, and is most gratifying to all interested in our pro gress and advancement. This increase in business is due mainly to two causes, to wit : Tlie high prices paid by our merchants for cotton and other country produce, thus inducing the farmers to bring their stufTs here for Hale, and the very low figure at which goods of every kind, and especially those most needed by the country people, are sold. Up to within two years ago wo had been discriminated against by the rail roads to such an extent that it was Impos sible for us to compete with oilier towns in the matter of prices for goods, and conse quently our business men labored under very great-disadvantages, which served to destroy their energies and retard materially the progress and development of not only their business but that of all others us well. Since, however, we have been put on nu equal footing in this respect with other places, the many natural advantages of our town as a market, combined with the enter prise and public spiritedness of our busi ness men generally, has drawn many hither who never traded hero before, and brought back to us the trade of hundreds who had ceased to patronize Anderson for tho reason that they could do better elsewhere. Our business this year as compared with that of former years is very much improved, and we have every reason lo believe that aa the advantages of our place us a business mart are more widely known this improvement will be still greater. Tho whole number of bales of cotton sold nt this place for the cotton yeur ending2lst August last amount ed to between 15,000 and 10,000 and this year wc have no doubt the number will reach 10,000 or 20,000. Up to the present time wc ure several hundred bales ahead of last year, with every indication that each succeeding week will add tu Ibis majority. There arc many causes for congratulation upon this progress, which should and doubtless will, stimulate every ono with a spark of enterprise or public Spirit to still greater cilbrts to build up our town. No one should relax his energies now. Do nil lhat is possible to extend the fame of An derson, and thus contribute to lier pros perity. There is no (own in South Curolina where higher prices are paid foi cotton or where goods ure sold nt lower prices, and there is no reason why uny furnier in this County should haul a pound of cotton to any oilier market. Our merchants appre ciate fully the demands of the times, and they will be the last ones to disregard theso demands. This, we think, every one cnn rest assured of. BRIEF MENTION. Small change is exceedingly scarce. Abbeville now luis a graded school. .Mr. Trowbridge lias established a good (roadness here us a broker. Dur merchants pay within half tl cent of Charleston prices for cotton. Mr. J. P. Recd left Anderson on Tuesday for the University of Virginia. Through night express trains have been put on liie Greenville ft Columbia Rail road. Rev. Roderick Henderson will preach in the Presbyterian Church on next Sunday morning. After tlie third election, the Democratic ticket of Abbeville County has been com pleted, Messrs. L. P. Smith and A. S. Stephens are having new residences erected on their rerpertive lots. The festival of the ladies of the Baptist Church, in progress as wc go to press, givc3 promise of great success. Thc gamo law expired by its own limita tion on tho 15th instant, and sportsmen can nov kill turkeys, partridges, etc. Lost Saturday and Tuesday were the big gest cotton days of the season so far. On tlie first 330 were sold and on the lust 3.33. The clerks in Camden have limo togo .squirrel hunting. The clerks in Anderson have no time now for anything but busi ness. "We would direct attention to the card in this issue of Messrs. N. K. it J. 1*. Sullivan, and those interested would do well to heed their warning. Mr. John W. Kay, formerly of this Coun ty but now residing near Greenville, had his right hand und arm terribly torn in hU gin the other day. The members of Roberts' Church and congregation arc respectfully requested to bc in attendance nt tho Church or thc first Sabbath in October next. The South Carolina Collegeof Agriculture and Mechanics will open on the 5th of October, and wc hope will be largely attend ed by the. young men of the State. Married, on Tuesday, 21st inst., by Rev. J. it. Earle, nt the residence of Mr. N. O. Fanner, Mr. Win. P. Snelgrove and Miss Annie C. Kilgore. all of Anderson County. Tho Anderson County Bible Society will hold its 32d annual meeting in tho Metho dist Church next Sunday night, October 3d. Tho sermon before thc Society will be preacned by Rev. Satnl. B. Jones, D. D , of Pendleton. It is desirable that thc meeting bo well attended. Mr. O. F. Tolly still enjoys the reputation of being the most enterprising furniture dealer- in the up-country, lils stock ls largor now than ever before, and ho is maxing every effort possible to please his customers. Ho has no competition, but he sells his goods nt bottom figures for all of that. Thc ladies of tho Presbyterian Church nt Pendleton gavo a festival in that town on last Friday, commencing at 3 o'clock p. m. and continuing into tho night, nt which they made about $80 above all exiie'nses. Thewholo afluir was admirably arranged, and was a most pleasant occasion for all .who attended. Messrs J. R. Font ft Co. oro recognized by all as the most extensive tobacco and fish dealers in town. They now have on hand over 1500 packages of fish and several thou sand pounds of tobacco, besides a largo and well assorted stock of general merchandise. Fant and Cummings aro enterprising gen tlemen, and will do what is right by their customers. Messrs. A. B. Towers ft Co. hnvo estab lished an enviable reputation as a mercan tile firm by fair dealing with their customers and by keening only first-class goods for sole. air. Towers, the senior of tho firm, has always m'a do it a point in purchasing his stocks to buv only such goods us he knew were reliable, and theroforo their patrons can always depend tn* tlie articles purchased of thom being ?hat they are rep resented. ^ The riiterprit!" ? establishment of Messrs. On last Saturday their cash suies nod collections amounted to over seventeen hundred dol lars, exclusive of collections on guano ac counts, which was probably the biggest day's wer'' ever done by any ?inn in Auder son. In every respect this tiru is thorough ly reliable. Mr. F. T. W?hlte returned on last Satur day after a pleasant three weeks' visit to relatives in Georgia. He bad the pleasure while over there of bearing a joint discus sion between the two rival candidates for Congress-Hon. Emory Speer, Independent, and Hon. H. P. Rvll, Democrat-which, for bitterness and pc/sonulitv, excelled any thing be ever witii?s\;ed. Mr. Speer is quite u young mun, and very youthful in appear ance, but as a speaker, Mr. Wilhite says he bas never heard bis equal. He completely demolished bis autugonist, and will in all probability bo rc elected to Congress in No- ! vein ber. Mr. M. A. Cobb's gin house mid three j bales of cotton were consumed by fire on ! las Thursday night. The burning was the work of an incendiary, and oil Wednesday morning Albert Ellis was arrested, and af ter a preliminary examination sent up by Trial Justice J. C. Whitefield for tri; ! by the Circuit Court. It guilty, be shou. '. bc most severely punished. Thc crime of arson is one of the gravest, and no penalty is too severe for it. Tho punishment of a few of those guilty of this offence would be decid edly healthy for the country. Arrangements for the sale of tickets to tho King's Mountain Centennial celebra tion, whicli takes p'nee October 5th to 8th, are complete, and tickets will be offered by all roads South on October 1st, good from ten to thirty days, according to the distance from King's Mount: "', at li cents per mile. S|>ecial trains will leave Charlotte and Greenville. S. C., every morning for King's Mountain, returning at night. The plat form at which visitors will get oil' is 228 miles (rom Atlanta, SU miles from Charlotte, and live miles from the battle ?round. Ample conveyances will be provided. Ev ery indication now points to u large and successful celebration. As no District Association convened to embrace last Sunday, Kev. Mr. Strickland, Agent for Raptist State Missions, went with Kev. W. H. King, the pastor* to Union Church, near Lowndesvillc, where betook a collection for lils cause amounting to cash. Ile reports favorably in many respects for that Church and people. A live Sunday School meets in thc church winter and summer, a Woman's Mission Society is in operation, and the outlook for progress and development is very bright. The con gregation is one of the" lurgest, if not the largest, in Anderson County, and the pastor and his corps of deacons are doing a good work for that community. Mr. Strick land's visit was thc first ever made the Union people by any agent for missions or education, but we opine it will not be the lost. I?xtiiu:tn ft-oni an Int i rc ..tin;; Lotter to the "Ilollglous Herald" from nn Andersoiilnn. Thc Religious Herald, published at Rich mond, Va., last week contained an inter esting letter written from this place over the signature of "Argus," (Rev. W. H. WHARTON* spent last Sunday and Monday herc, and carries off lu cash $100, and bondi 91,200. and could ho have Hayed louger he would have obtained more. Our place, remarkable for its health, has had for two months past nn UNUSUAL MORTALITY. While I was pastor for three and one-half years. I hu-1 hut three or four funerals. Uro. Itel I has had as many in two months. Wc nave lind no epidemic, but our ?ells have tolled often and sadly of late. TWO SERIOUS i.o Captain Joseph Y. Fretwcll. onu of our oldest and most valued citizens, died, at hts home near herc, a few days ago, most quietly and peacefully, without suffering of account. Hu was nearly four score, aud yet ho was hale and hearty to tho last week of his life. He was a Christian, I believe, although ho hid not uniera Uh any church, and 1 look forward to meeting aim in thc better world. 1 was his pastor, his family were Ilap tists, and I often visited him at his quiet country* homo, taking my little children with mc. Ile loved children passionately ; said : "I am never so happy as when I have my arms full of them, and my heart full of them, too." Often placing his hands on tho head of my little daughter!., he would say, fervently : "God bless you, and shield you, and save you, my daughters." Ile had on abiding trust in Jesus, and lived au exemplary Ufo. A large an afflicted community of friends mourn his loss. His children and grandchildren rank among our very best people showing that they have had good training. My last visit to his house was tho lost week in June. Ho welcomed me, as usual, and said : "I do so much apnreciate this visit, sir. I was nfrald you wouldu't have timo to come and sec an old man ngaln." Kidding mo good-bye as I went away, nc said : "I know 1 you will succeed in your new work, but I cm sorry you gave up your church." Our other foss was that of Judge J. P. Heed, who for many years, was ono of thu mott substantial supports to our Uaptist church, and the most public spirited cltii.cn lu our village. He had been a public mau all his life, serving his country and State, and to Iiis efforts aro mainly duu many good works and monuments of progress in upper South Carolina. Ills illness was lung and painful, but ho exhibited great character under hu sufferings, and has gone to "where the weary are r.l rest." His nature was noble aud generous, and lils heart was tender aud sympathetic rv? a woman's. Ho possessed that ndniirablc quality of ..'."< manhood that enables une lo say, "I was wrong, I ask your pardon," mid hu was a shining Illustration of it ; hod he julgcd a servant unjustly or hastily, he was as prompt tn seek out that ser vant and make due amends. Kora go-xl while I was his pastor, loved ac I appreciated, ?nd it was so plainly to bo seen in lils long sickness that tho good tattier was mellowing thu apple before it WON to fall. Ho was specially fond of Hod's word and prayer, aud often, when I visited him, ho would remind mc almost os soon as I rat down, that I must read God's word and make prayer before I retired. His ideal of a Christian man, minister, editor and argumcutartan, was found in Ur. Jeter. Ho -zz constant!;* uttering his praises. Often has ho said to mo : "flro.S., Dr. Jeter ii thu greatest man tho Uaptists have produced ;" and u lien hu dit,I, ho said: "T?tere ls no ouo to take hit place." A short time before bis departure, I visited him j ho could speak hut little ; My only bops for sal vation ls in my Ilea? nlv Father, through his Sou Jesus Christ, aud I uon t bel le vu he will fail mo. He never hes." And ss be r-aid at J.-t.-r, so may l>c said of him. Thcro is no una to fill his placo in tho enterprise and public spirit of our town. A large, honorable and respectable family moora his loss, and to them and thc friends of Captain Frctwuil wo tender our sincere sympathies. Thus together havo nasied away twa ni lh# nlno.t ...ntl. I nels on tho out-po-'s of mortality in Andeiton. .?. Gascestlou. Ma. EDiTon: We wish to 3jK.uk with thc readers of your paper about Anderson and her interests. Wc are of thc opinion that thc timo hos arrived to build a large factor}* in thc town of Anderson. We believe that our peoplo havo tho sparc means to enter into such an enterprise, and if correct in this the only remaiuing question is, Will it pay? We think it will, if projierly man aged. There can be no doubt about it. We are In *be centre of the finest cotton belt in the State-cotton suillcicnt sold in mr market annually to supply a flrst-clux, cot ton factory. This is certainly a very deci ded advantage over many mills that succeed and declare large dividends to their stockhol ders annually. Wu take it that a good per centum could and would be realised on thu investment, therefore no objection can bc urged to thc enterprise on this considera tion. . Is the foregoing all thc consideration? We think not. It would make Anderson a better market for the planter; it would double tho population of our town; it would increase ibo price of real estate both lu the town and surrounding country ; thc mercantile business would bo greatly in creased ; the business of mechanics-car penters, masons, painters, and all-would bc greatly enhanced, and from these sources many other advantages would naturally arise, such as additional contributions vo our schools and churches. Thcso consif . r ations alone, disconnected from the percen tage on the investment, would compensate the stockholders, but when wo get thc per centage and the other advantages attending tho enterprise, why not enter into it? Wo write with tho hope of getting our people to think on this matter, discuss this matter, perfect this matter and build the factory. Jons R.
