Thr** Italians, with a barp and two vio lins, furnished delightful music on our streets during the pest week. Messrs. Sullivan & Mattison and J. B. Clark & Sons now occupy the new store rooms in the Centennial Houso. Wild turkeys, partridges, doves, wood cocks and pheasants are the only feathered game protected by law in thb State. Judging from the amount of improve ments going on in Willtamston, we would conc'ude that her citizens ara prospering. Tho South Carolina Presbytery will meet with the Wllliaraston Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, 7th instant, and continue in session several days. Chamblee, on aged and respected ci tixen of itm County, died ai hb residence in V?rennos* township on * Wednesday night of last week, and a large number of relatives and friends mourn his death. His remains were buried in tho graveyard at Mt. Creek Church on Friday. In consequence of a misunderstanding . the meeting of the stockholden of the An derson Educational Association appointed for Monday last was not held. The ladles of the Baptist Church are ar ranging for a hot dinner and supper for Friday, 2d of April, and will spare no effort to make the entertainment a success, the proceeds of which will go to the parsonage fund. The usual variety of substantials as well as delicacies will bo furnished, and tho publie generally are invited. Mr. P. H. Hammond, an enterprising (armer of Williamston township, brongbt us a sample of a two-acre patch of wheat last week that is about two feet high. Ho says that tho sample is an average of the whole patch, and that from an acre and a quarter of the same ground he gathered forty bnsbels.of the samo cereal last year. The dram?, "Naval Engagements," which was to have been rendered in Masonic Hall on last Friday evening and boen a part of the entertainment that was given by the Methodist ladies, and which was postponed ? for the reason that the inclement weather prevented the necessary rehearsing, will be i presented in Masonic Hall this (Thursday) evening. The public gen eral ly aro oordiayll invited to attend. The State Board of Health are taking steps to have all persons in the State vacci nated who have not been heretofore. There hos been little or no vaccinating done in the State since tho war, and in case amail-pox should be introduced into our midst there would be nothing to prevent it spreading. It is a who move, and boards of physicians in ever locality of the State will be charged with the duty of performing the operations. A correspondent of tho Barnwell People makes I JO following pertinent remarks con cerning an evil habit that many people have acquired, and who make no effort to restrain its force or check its growth : "The habit of talking in church, during the ser vices, is certainly a great evil, and a very popular one, and a habit, if indulged in only by children, could be born o with some little forbearance ; but when persons who have age as well as respectability on their hido are guilty of this deplorable evil, I think they ought to be told of lt, and, if propriety would admit, they should be re buked in public." Tho New York Cash Store waa never be fore as pretty and attractive as on yesterday, tho occasion of its grand spring opening. The thousands of goods of every descrip tion, character and color that lined the counters, adorned the shelves and windows, and that were suspended on cords stretched from sida to sido and from end to end, pre sented a most beautiful Bight, and attracted scores of our citizens who lore the beautiful and admire the picturesque. This store was the center of attraction throughout the entire day, and from about ll o'clock in the morning until late in tho afternoon was crowded with ladies, who kept the polite and accommodating proprietors and clerks busy in supplying their many wants. The elaborate decorations were most artistically arranged, and reflected much credit on tho taste of all concerned. Messrs. Arnstein ?V Rose, the proprietors, are highly pleased at the success with which their enterprise and energy was reworded on this occasion, and will doubtless make similar displays in the future. Dr. Lawrence C. Neal and Mr. Charley White, of Hopewell township, in this County, have invented an attachment to a gin for opening cotton bolla that do not fully mature before the stalk is killed by cold weather, and for separating tho cotton from the burr. The attachment is a work entirely of their own, Is quite simple and has been most successfully operated by them the past season, the resulta of which will leave no doubt in tho minds of any as to its great value to the cotton-producers. We aro informed that they gathered enough cotton bolls that would not open rrom tho fields of a singlo farm this fall to make twelve or thirteen five hundred pound boles, and that tho cotton was sold in this market side by side with that which was picked by hand at tho same price. If the invention proves to bo all that is claimed for lt, it will e *tainiy take rank among the most important inventions of the age, and will add millions of dollars yearly to the v 'uo cf this important crop, os there ls always a large per centngo of tho bolls that never open, especially when tho crop is late or. the. fall corly. Reid tells us that there was a rain I fall of eighteen inches during the recent wet j weather. He learned, it from a boiler of that depth in his yard...A very singular occurrence took place at Henry White field's (colored) on the night of tho 15th inst. The Stellar phenomena which will ap pear in tho sky shortly, announce, as we are told by the' Luxembourg Gazelle, an event which may become dangerous and destructivo to the earth and its inhabi tants. Since the beginning of.the Christian era the Perihelia (thus the appearance of the stars lu th:, neighborhood of the sun is'called) of the four great planets, Jupi ter, Uranus. Saturn and Neptune, have not taken place at the same time, But this event will occur during tho next five ?ears, and according to Dr. Knapp, who as collected a mass of statistical mate rial on thu subject, the nearness of these planets to the sun, when occurring at the ? same time, has so far always been marked by great epidemics and mortality. The views of astronomers aro to the effect that when one or more of the great planets como near to the sun, the temperature ! and the condition of our atmosphere is so disturbed, that destructivo fluctuations, dreadful torrents of rain, long continued droughts, ?cc., arise, by which harvests are destroyed and pestilential epidemics ?reduced among men and beasts. Dr. [napp, while examining the history of the great epidemics of more than 2,000 years previous to our present time, hos found the fact always confirmed that the nearness of a great planet to tho sun bas invariably been followed by an epidemic. Thus in tho 6th and 16th centurie s three of these great planets bad appeared near tho sun, and iu these periods at the same time the greatest and most destructive pestilential epidemics of the Christian era have occurred. But noon after 1880, for the first time during tho last 2,000 years, all four of these grent planets will at th? same time come into tho perihe lion, so that probably for several years, vis., from 1880 to 1885, the health and lives of the inhabitants of the earth will bo exposed to a severe trial. Inundations, failures of harvests, es pecially of potatoes, doadly fevers among mon and pests among the cattle are pro phesied as precursors of tho perihelion of the planets. $? We do not mention Dr. Knapp's forer bodings in order to distress anybody, we simply communicate facts. That tho simultaneous nearness to the sun of all the great planets of cur solar system, one ot which, Jupiter, is a thousand times larger than the earth, must cause consid erable disturbances in our atmosphere and temperature, is possible ; that these distyrbanees may bc injurious to health is equally possible ; and that these as tronomical phenomena hu?e hitherto been accompanied by great epidemics, ia proved by history.-Charleston News and Courier. - A contemporary properly describes Judge Field, the man who is looming up os a Democratic presidential candidato, as "honest, fearless and independent.
