He lins many friends Io this County who will learn with sorrow of ids death. Thc Good Samaritans held a picnic evie bration in Anderson on last Friday. A large crowd of colonsl people were present, .?nd the meeting was an orderly one in the main. The procession numbered some three hundred persons, and a large number of followers. Speeches were made by Elias Terrell, Jehu Thomas, a colored man from Newberry named Jones, and one or two others. The speakers, ns far as we tan leam, spent most of their time in asserting that thc society is not i>olitical, nnd were very much exercised over the article in the INTELLIGENCER last week, which expressed our belief that it is a political society. They denounced the charge, and said that w ho over told the Editor of this paper that it was political had said that which was false. The object which thoy give for the society is the elevation of their race, charity to the poor, and supervision of burying the dead. These are worthily objects if they are the only ones held hy the organization, but it is re ported all over this County that its object is to unite the colored peoplo on polities. Colored men have said this, and the char acter of the leaders of the society here indi cates that there is something beyond tho objects given. The meetings are too fre quent and last too long for simply benevo lent purpose. We do not believe that the masses of the members know tho object for which the society is formed, for as a general thing they cannot gi vonny intelligent object. Thc}' are simply organized, and if there is any political significance to como out of it, the development will only be made a short time before the next election. The society is formed under Northern inlluenccs, nnd will be used in accordunco with the plan for the execution of which it was brought into existence. If it has no politics in it now, its members should guard it carefully in order that nothing of thc kind shall be admitted into its ranks, for as certainly as it is made a political machine, just so sure ly will it produce nothing but mischief. Tho Colored Good Templars. The Anderson lodge i.;f Colored Good Templars had an anniversary celebration on last Thursday, which drew forth a largo and very orderly gathering of their race. Tho procession, numbering about ono hundred and fifty, marched from the Greeley Instituto through thc public square to Hampton Park, and was bead ed by tho colored band which made very creditable music for tho occasion. At thc stand tiio mooting was organized by Mr. Green I). Williams, the prosiding ofiieoi of tho lodge, who mndo a brief and well timed introduction, after which Messrs E. lt. Murray, J. .S. Murray, J. A. Rus sell, G. P. Tolly and li. P. Smith wert introduced and made short and appropri ate tempor?neo speeches. At thc conclu sion of tho speaking over sixty now namos wero enrolled, after which th? procession returned to tho lodgc-rooir and dispersed. Tho proceedings through out were orderly, and showed au evldenl advancement on tho part of tho coloree pooplo of this County, which is due, ii a largo measure, to tho extension of th? wholesome doctrino of tempor?neo.
