Eorle and family, of Sum tor, spent Sunday, 9th inst., in Anderson. r .For the first time in many years, St. Patrick's day passed without being celebra? ted in Anderson. .-^; The farmers of this County are using as much, if not more, commercial fertilizers this year than ever before. There were white frosts and considerable ice on Monday and Tuesday mornings, but as yet it is thought the fruit is safe. The warm, spring weather of the past few weeks has made a wonderful change for the better on the small grain crops. Rev. J. L. Vasa, of Spartanburg, will preach in the Baptist Church at this place on next Sunday morning and night. The appointment of the real estate asses son for this C junty hare been made by tho Auditor, and are published in this issue. The members of New Prospect Church arc erecting a house of worship on the site of the one destroyed by fire about a year ago. Messrs. J. S. and E. B. Murray, of the Anderson Bar, are in attendance upon tho Pick era Court, which convened on Monday last. The improvements to the stage in the . Masonic Hall by the addition of good scen? ery, etc, will greatly increase the interest of the plays. The small boy who bade good-bye to > Sunday school just after Christmas, is now ' making an effort to regain his standing in time for the coming picnic ?" ? . . Mr. Robert Stevenson, the new Steward at the Poor House, .is very much liked by the inmates, which speaks well for his man? agement of tba institution. A tame bear, the property of a moun? taineer, and which was brought hither for sole, has furnished considerable amusement during the past week to the boys of town. . Fant announces in another column that he has associated with him in he book and stationery business his son Foster. He is in every respect a worthy and enterprising young man. Last Saturday, 15th in?L, was the last day on which persons are allowed to hunt dur? ing the present season. The game l&w is now in force, and persons violating its pro? visions are liable to indictment. One would never think that this was wheat-growing country from the amount of flour that is every day hauled from town. And yet when the crop is harvested there is always plenty made to do another year. .The Town Council has passed an ordi? nance regulating the charges for the use of the market house by persons who use it in disposing of fresh meats, vegetables, etc, but does not prevent parties from selling on the street Mi*. James B. Moore, of Anderson, has gone to Texas on a prospecting tour, a nd if J well pieused he contemplates making his future home in that State. He left on Monday evening but, and will-be gone sev? eral weeks. Those who attend the entertainment of | the Theatrical Company on Friday evening are destined to enjoy the occasion very to ach. The play is a good one, and the characters will be well sustained by those to whom they have been assigned. Rev. J. C. Hudson, collecting agent of the Furman University, says that the col? lections for the past season have been very good, considering the closeness of the times, and that the friends of the University have no occasion for discouragement. ?We regret to announce the death of Rev. John Leavell, of Belton township, an aged and usefnl minister of the Baptist denomi tion. By his upright, consistent Christian ' life he bad won for himself many warm friends, who, together with his large circle of relatives, mourn his death. The State Convention of the Y. M. C. A. will meet in Anderson on Thursday, 24th of April next, and will continue through tho Friday, Saturday and Sunday follow? ing. The Association at this place has ap? pointed committees to make the necessary arrangements, and the meeting will no doubt be one of very great interest. A new schedule on the Greenville and Colombia Railroad went into effect on last' Monday morning, which is, in some respects, an improvement on the old one, while in other respects it will work a disadvantage. It is an improvement in that it shortens the length of time required to make the trip to and from Columbia, that persons arc now enabled to make the trip to Charles? ton from the np-country in a single day, and that onr mails now reach us two hours earlier in the morning and one hour earlier in the evening, and also in making connec? tion with Greenville bound freight trains at Belton. The disadvantage of the change is in the discontinuance of the local excursion tickets. The down train arrives at Pon dletou at 6 a. m., Anderson 6:50, William? ston 7:20, Belton 7:45, Honea Path 8:38, Columbia 3:35. That the Stalls of the Town Market be rented for the term of one year by the Town Council for the sum of Fifteen (15) Dollars, to be paid in advance, to be used by the person or persons renting the same for the sale of Meats, Fish, Game, Vegeta? bles, or other articles qf food only. 2d. That the Town Market shall be un? der the charge and supervision of the Town Marshal, who shall see that it is kept in a neat and cleanly condition, and require any and every person using a Stall thereof for the sale of Fresh Meats or Vegetables, or other articles of food, to clean out the same thoroughly each day after using it. 3d. That every person or persons neglect? ing to clean out a Stall or Stalls used by them, on the same day after using it, for any of the above purposes, shall, upon con? viction thereof before the Town Council, be fined not exceeding the sum of Two Dollars, or imprisoned not exceeding four days, in the discretion of the Town Coun? cil, for each and every offence 4th. That it shall be the duty of the Town Marshal to collect in advance from every person or persons Fifty Cents per day for each Stall used, and daily return the same to the Clerk of the Ceuncil, except those provided for in Section 1 of this Ordi? nance. 5th.
