The colored woman charged with the burn ing of Hill Parker's gin house in January, and who was required to leavo thc State., ventured back to her old haunts a few days ago apparently to stay, but she was prompt ly sent to Anderson jail.Mr. J. P. Brown got bin hands badly burned last week in extinguishing tho fire from tho clothes of a little girl who was attending his school. She was not injured, however.On the night of the 2d inst., ns Mr. E. P. Earls, accompanied by a little soi: of the lute Col. Harrison, was nearing his home lie de scried a 'possum sitting composedly upon a fence nt the roadside, and alighted tu dis patch it, leaving the little boy in the buggy. But the proceeding frightened the llorac, which dashed oil in a full run. The little fellow was dashed to thc ground, tho con cussion knocking him senseless, and caus ing a severe woumi on the head, the crani um being laid bare for several inches. The sufferer was delirious through tho night. Dr. Brown, of this place was called, and the little fellow is now recovering. "But," some will mentally inquire, "did he kill the 'possum?" To such we say, he did. 1). Savannah Valley IlallroaU Meeting. Pursuant to tho call of President Ltti mer, a meeting of the corporators uf thc Savannah Valley Railroad convened in Ma sonic Hall at Lowndcsvlllu on thu Dib of March. The President called tho meeting to order. A call of thc roll showed thu fol lowing corporators present, to wit : W. \V. Humphreys, D. L. Hall, Wm. O'Briant, J. M. Latimcr, Sr., J. T. Barnes, J. B. Moseley, J. P. Toling, T. Baker, George S. Durditt, J. B Leroy, S. S. Baker, Dr. J. T. Haskins, A. J. (.'liukscalcs and W. B. Cliukscales. The Secretary, Maj. E. B. Murray, being absent, W. W. Humphreys was elected Secretary pro teui? Tho minutes of thc last meeting and tho ntdendsd charter were read. President Latimcr, in stating the objects of thc meeting, alluded to thc obstacles in thc original charter, which proventcd pro gress towards securing subscriptions to thc capital stock of thc Road, and which were happily removed, in the amended charter. He slated the object of the meeting to bc mainly for the purpose of conference and consultation, looking lo tho adoption*of such measures as would secure an early commencement of thc great work. Capt. J. T. Barnes made an earnest and spirited address, and was followed by W. W. Humphreys, J. M. Latimcr mid others, all the speeches breathing a resolute de termination lo build the Road at all haz ards. Tho following resolutions were then adop ted unanimously ai:d with enthusiasm : .Hcsohcd, That the construction of tho Savannah Valley Railroad ls not ?.eily prac ticable, br. . necessity to tho proper devel opment Ci -:.e fertile country to bc traversed by it, airording as it will easy ingress and egress, und promising swill and cheap transit to the valuable products of a section now remote from all railroad facilities. Resolved, That thc cost of constructing this Road, under the plan now adopted, in volving an increase of taxation f.<r three years only by the towns a' t townships im mediately interested, will bc insignificant compared with thc many advantages to How from ila speedy completion. L. P. Smith and Reuben Burrega followed with appropriate remarks. Dy invitation, Elders F. Morris and W. Smith, whose ad dresses were replete with practical instruc tions. Another opportunity was offered the col ored people to address thc meeting, when Messrs. Warren Morris and Jack Hum phreys spoke, stating, at some length, thc difficulties they had lo contend with as leaders of an uneducated people, and asking advice upon special points. The next subject taken up was "The duty of Pastora to Sunday Schools," which was opened by Elder J. R. Kurlo, in a clear and impressive manner, after which Elder D. Eugood, Rob't Adgcr, and Messrs. Jack Humphreys and Julius Thomas, colored, participated in the discussion. In tho afternoon the subject, "Qualifica tion of Teachers,"' was discussed by Elder J. C. Hudson, who occupied the entire after noon. His remarks were fraught with in stinctive counsel peculiarly adapted to tho colored people, and elicited profound atten tion. Adjourned. Turill?
