The Court of General Sessions waa con tinacd, and consumad the remainder of last week. The first case tried after our account left off was that of tho State vs. Andrew Lewis. Dock Williams, Nuttier Campbell, Vf mon Mock, Janies Edwards and Norris Edwards, charged with riot and assault and buttery with intent to kill. The prisoners were defend d by Wm. 8. Brown, Esq. This was tho case of the Towuvillo riot, .which occurred last summer, when a party of negroes tried to kill. John Williams. Andrew Lewis, Dock William?, humer Campbell, Vernon Mack and Norris Ed wards were found guilty of riot and assault with intent to kill, Norris Edwards being recommended to the mercy of thc Courtaud James Edwards being acquitted. Thc first four of thoso convicted wero sentenced to confinement and labor in the penitentiary .for one year, whilst Norris Edwards was sentenced to Imprisonment in tho county jail for one month. The next case called wns that of the State against Toncy Williams. Allen Skelton and Frunk Smith, indicted for burglury, grand larceny and receiving stolen goods. As Allen Skoltou and Frank Smith have not been urrcstcd, on motion of thc Solicitor the case was continued. The next ease tried was that of the State against William Martin, Indicted for mali cious trespass, und defended by Messrs. Kennedy, McGowan, Mooro and Allan. Thc prisoner waa found guilty and sen tenced to imprisonment in tho county jail for tbo terni ot si- months. Thc next cast was that of tho Stato against Isaac Sloan, charged with burglary und grand larceny. Messrs. Orr &Tribb'.o defended tho.prisoner. Thc evidence which tho Stato relied upon was wholly circum stantial, tho strongest port of it being that there were peculiar indentations in the track made by one of the purtles supposed to have assisted in the felony, and that the shoo of Isaac Sloan made a track precisely similar. Tho counsel proved an alibi in defence by two witnesses, and tho prisoner vr.s ac quited. The triul in the caso of thc Sloe against Isaac Mcbain, indicted for murder, was next beard, and elicited much interest. It will bc remembered that this was tho eise whare Mr. lie Lui n, on horseback', ran over Mr. Drury Snipes near the residence of Col. Rucker, throwing him npon the ground and causing his death. Messrs.'Orr it Trib blc defcuded thc prisoner. As the evidence was insufficient to pio.vc nmlico or criminal carelessness, tho prisoner was acquitted. ' 'The last case in thc Court of Sessions was finished on Friday afternoon. This was thc case of the State at-ninst Jim Tucker, charged with burglary. Tho prisonor was defended by W. S. Brown, Esq. The only witnes? in thc case was Mr. J. K. Duckworth, tho State's witness, wdiose houso was en'-ered. Mr. Tucker caught the prisoner in one of the rooms of his house before he had n chance to steal anything. Tho prisoner of fered no witness in defence, and was found guilty and sentoncjd tc confinement und lubor in the penitentiary for his lifetime. The Hcntcncos were pronounced on Satur day morning, after which tho Court of Ses sions was adjourned. Tho Court of Common IMcus thon organ ized, and after thc transaction of a small amount of business adjourned until Mon day. Thc Court on convening Monday morning entered upon tho trial of a serbs of importunt cases, more extended notices of .which will bc given next wook. Tho Savannah Valley ilnllroad. Tbero will bo a meeting of thc corpora tors of the Savannah Valley Railroad Com pany, held at Lowndesvilie, in Abbeville County, on Thursday, the Otb day of next month, (March,) to consider matters of im portance cornie, ted with tho prosecution of tho enterprise. As this will ho thc firat meeting of the corporators held under tho amended charter, it is very important that tho meeting should bo a fud ono. We have carefully examined tho va rious county ofllees, Sherill's, Clerk's, Pro bate Judge's, Treasurer's, Auditors and Behool Commissioner's, and And shem nsatly and correctly kept. Wo have ex amined tho Jail and find the prisoners well carod for and mado as comfortable as tb? nature of their condition permita. It is re commended to us by tho Sherilf, nod wc endorse hi? suggestion, that a passage through tho west end of the dungeon and n partition making three cells in tue samo be forthwith made, as a protection to bim and safety to thc prisoners which bc moy haVe in custody-the samo to be made under his instruction und bis direction. 2nd. Through a committee of this body we havo visited tho Poor flouse and find therein thirty-five inmates, most of whom are invalids, unable to work anti it is neces sary for thc Steward, Robert Stevenson, to engego labor to cultivate the farm. Wo re gret that the Steward bas to purchase pro visions on credit, and we think it to the in terest of the County to provide some means to buy on tho cash basis. It is (urthsr re commended that the County Commissioners erect a new barn, as thc present one is in such n dilapidated condition that provender und forage cannot be preserved. 3rd. From information given us by per sons from various sections of the County, wc feel authorized in saving that tho public roads are in a bad condition, and recogniz ing the great necessity of good roads, we recommend that tho proper authorities ex amine closely their condition and have such as aro in need of work put in propor condi tion. 4th. We further present, tbut we have beard complaints from some portions of tho County, particularly along the Saluda River, to the effect that persons i:i clearing lands ulong streams i j?! logs, brush, Ac, into tho river to get them out of the way, thereby obstructing the natural flow of the water, by which the lands are injured, and tho health of the community likoly to be en dangered. We do not, at the present term of Court, feel disposed to present any in dictment for this, but simply call thc atten tion of the County gonerally, and of this community specially, to tho Act of tho General Assembly providing against tbi? in a special Act relating to Andorson County ; and also thc fact that it is tho subject of in dictment even in tho absenco of such act of thc Legislature, and cannot "be permitted. 5th. We have inrornu?uon which wo deem trustworthy that throughout ovory township in tho County illicit venders of spirituoup liquors are in tho constant habit of Bulling and distributing their poison, which, out side of its illegality, is ruinous to tho morals of our young men, and, in a great measure, destructive to thc effectiveness of our labor clement. Wo therefore earnestly invite thc attention of our respective Triai Justices to this flagrant violation of the law, and ro quent them to leave no legal means un touched whereby said violators of thc law may be brought to punishment. We have been informed that oven here, at tho scat of justice, wagoners from Georgia and North Carolina are in tho habit of coming with impunity, the Chief Marshal of tho town, Joseph R. Fant, saying tbut bo has no au thority to arrest them. Thc attention of thc Trial Justices for this township is called to tho above fact. 9th. Wc have received a communication signed "Citizen," in which William Wat son, (col,) is cbnrged with soiling whisky without license, giving as witnesses M. T. Glenn and Wm. P. Brown, and wc tbore foro recommend that ho be indicted. 7th. We recommend that our County Commissioners examine the Sloan's Ferry road leading from the Webb place to Moun tain Creek church, ond if, in thoir judg ment, there bo any necessity for opening and working the same, that they proceed, under tho Act in such sase made and pro vided, to have inc samo re-opened and worked as soon as their convenience will permit and tho interests of the county de mand. In conclusion, wo avail ourselves of the opportunity to extend our thanks to the presiding Judge and Hie Solicitor for their uniform courtesy and kindness tons as well as for their valuable assistanco and instruc tion in thc proper discharge of our duties.'
