THE INTELLIGENCER. LOCAL MATTERS. The Finest Yet. We were shown on last Tuesday three turnips, two white globe and one ruta baga raised by Mr. J. C. Keys, that weighed twenty-three pounds, without top, the globes weighing each eight pounds. They are the finest we have seen this season. Christmas Goods. Mr. James Anderson, our enterprising young merchant, has just received a large and well assorted stock of Christmas goods, among which is a large stock of fine cigars, which he is selling remarkably low for the cash. We arc indebted to him for lib? eral samples. Temperance Picnic. There will be a temperance .picnic at Union Church, in this County, on Friday, 20th instant, at which addresses will be delivered by Rev. B. Hays and Messrs. G P. Tolly and L. P. Smith. The public gen? erally and ladies especially are invited to attend and carry their baskets. Fine Yield of Clover. Mr. W. W. Russell, of Anderson County, cut this year four and a half tons of red clover hay off of nine-tenths of an acre, bottom land. He lias also grazed two milch cows, one hour each day, morning and even? ing, all the pas* summer, off of one-half acre of red clover.?Kcowee Courier. Enlargement of the Register. The Columbia Daily Register comes to us in an enlarged and more handsome form. Col. John W. R. Pope has been added to its editorial corps. The Register is now on the high road to prosperity, and in its new size and accomplished management deserves the support of the people of the State. Little Girls' Entertainment. The Little Girls' Sewing Society of the Presbyterian Church will give an enter? tainment in Masonic Hall on next Tues? day evening, which we hope will be liberally patronised by our citizens. Fresh oysters, coffee and other refreshments will be served. As their object is to raise funds for the cause of Missions, they should be encouraged in their efforts. Important Grange Meeting. The Executive Committee of Pomona Grange met on the first Monday, 2d inst., with a bare majority present. After con sidering and discussing various matters of business pertaining to the interest of the Grange, it was considered important that an extra meeting of the Committee be held at J. B. Watson's store on the 16th iust. at 10 o'clock a. m. for closing up some unfin? ished business, and members of the Com? mittee are requested to attend promptly. Excursion to Atlanta. Another excursion to Atlanta is arranged for the 20th instant, for the benefit this time of the Pickens Presbyterian Church. The excursion train will leave Easley at 3:40 p. m., Liberty 3:57 p. m., Ceutral 4:15 p. m., Seueca City 4:40 p. m., Westminster 5:14 p. m. Parties can procure tickets from the following gentlemen at $2 for the round trip: J. F. Folger, Pickens; C. A. Bruce, Easley; S. D. Stewart, Liberty; R. G. Gaines, Central;- John C. Carey, Seneca City; H. C. Summers, Pendleton. Death of an Aged Citizen. We regret to chronicle the death of Mr. Thomas Banna, which occurred at his resi? dence in Hall township on Tuesday night last, in the 90th year of his age. Mr. Hanna has always been noted for honesty and in? tegrity of purpose, and by his upright, in? offensive- and Christian life made many true and lasting friends. He served in the war of 1812 with credit to himself and country. He had been blind for many years prev ious to his death, and was a con? sistent member of the Methodist Church for probably half a century past. Cotton Stealing. We hear of several persons who have lost large amounts of seed cotton this fall by having it stolen both from their fields and houses. The thieves have been particularly bad in the neighborhood of Mr. Jcptha Harper. On Sunday night before last Mr. Harper bad stolen from one of his fields about 900 pounds, and on the night follow? ing the cotton house of Mr. John L Watson was broken open and about 1000 pounds taken from it. Other thefts, varying from 100 to 800 pounds in amount, have been made in the same community. One negro, Ike Sloan, has been arrested and lodged in jail, and others against whom strong suspi? cions are entertained, are being closely watched. No efforts should be spared to bring the guilty parties to punishment. Burned to Death. We are indebted to Mr. J..hn A. II. Brins don for the following particulars of a fire and the burning to death of a child which occurred in Pendleton on Monday night last: "Last night about half-past ten, when the wind was raging, our little town was alarmed by the cry of fire. It was soon dis? covered that a small house, standing near the fork of the Anderson road, property of Mr. James Hunter, was burning. The house was occupied by a colored woman called Florence Johnson, widow of Allen Johnson, one of the men killed at Broadaway trestle two years ago. She had gone to a hot supper, and the house was locked up. It was rumored that she was in the habit of locking up her child when she attended such places, and in this case it unfortunate? ly was true, for the child's remains were found in the ruins. Even if it had been known that the child was in the house at the first, it would have been impossible to save it, for on the fire being discovered the whole house was in a blaze. The woman has lost everything she owned as well as her child, raving only the clothes she was wearing at the time." Masonic OSicors. At the regular convocation of Burning Bush Chapter, No. 7, K. A.
