There have been fewer horses and mules brought to this market for sale this season than for st vera! years past. The "Revenues'1 don't relish such jokes ns thc Lowndesvillo boys deal in, ami wt; venture the opinion that they won't spend another night in that section again soon. Mr. Janies Anderson is fully prepared to supply his customers with Christmas goods of every description. He sure to give him a t all, as kc is in every respect worthy of your patronage. A friend tobi us the other day that the announcement of our purpose to secure a li-t of all the preachers that went to the circus kept them away. Well, that . c c units for BO many vacant .?eats on Friday, Saloday passed off quietly, anti only a few pieces of real estate were sold. The busiest laen in town were the horse-swappers, s?v irai dozen in uuiitber, all of whom carried home different critters from what they brought. The firing of a pistol in the bearing of a ''Revenue" bj* anybody else except himself is an unpardonable sin, ami the perpetrator ol' such a foul deed deserves to be hung by the tongue in the highest tree in Abbeville County, and bis body left for food of carniv orous birds. Remember that thc obi finn of E. H. Murray it Co. arc anxious to close up their business, and thnt all who ?ire indebted to them, cither for advertising or subscription, would confer a very great favor by calling nt the INTELLIOKNCKK office at once and set tling up. Wo wire pleased to meet our esteemed friend anti neighbor, Mr. I). A. Smith, of thc Keouee G.urier, in Anderson on last Friday, who was down on business. The Courier has just entered upon its fourteenth volume, and is one of the best country papers in thc State. Mr. Wm. E. Mr. I'agctt was well known in this County, having been born and raised within its limits, and thc news of his death will bc received by many with sadness. The Washington ((?a.) Thc Croat London Circus exhibited here on Friday last, but was not so extensively patronized by our people as circuses gener ally are. The crowd on the slr?"et waa quite as largo as usual, though the attendance upon the performance is Bald to have been much smaller, many questioning whether they i ia id expenses. The circus proper was better than tba average, while the menag erie was somewhat inferior. Thc Young Men's Christian Association of Newberry have recently opened II read ing room, which is well supplied with wholesome anti instructive literature, and is open every evening from 7 to 10 o'clock. Cannot Anderson lilford as much? There is nothing that tends to elevate thc stuudurd of morality and intelligence in a communi ty more than the distribution of good, sound and wholesome reading matter. We should have the reading room, and it .should bc free In all. An altercation occurred between two young men by the name of McDonald and H-dl on last Monday about tinco mile! The wound Is a very painful one, though it is not considered dangerous It ??C:;,S thal Ibero have been difference: between the parties for sonic time past, one" they mnile the accidental meeting on tin public highway the occasion for scttliiq them. Moreover, the County is nut h- licfitcd ono i! dhix's worth by the thousands that it L compelled to |>ay. Don't leave your old bonus, our neighbors, bul bear your burden aa best you can. The down freight train on the Greenville A Columbia Railroad ran over and killed a white mnn between Helton and Williamston ?>n last Saturday e.cuing. The mau was lying across the traek, ami was not discov ered by tlnr engineer in time to stop the train. Ilia body was terribly mutilated, hi? bead being: crushed, one arin entirely severed fr..m bis body, ami his feet ami legs badly mashed and broken. The unfortu nate tuan was supposed to be a trump wending ?tis way southward for thc winier months, as he was unknown to the citizens in thc community. It is supposed that be was intoxicated, and hud fallen asleep. Tho South is beim; overrun by tramps, who arc coming hither from the North for tin- winter months. They are generally allie bodied men, who are too lazy and trilling to tarn their bread by holiest work, um! rely on the liberality of the ever gen. emus and hospitable fanners ol thc coun try for their foot! ami shelter, for which tho least compensation is never offered. We think it is about time these fellows wt re being taught that thc South is not an asylum for such vagabonds und scoundrels. Wi hope the farmers in this section will refuse every ono of them food anti sheller until it S earned by work. If ibis plan ol dealing with them was adopted by the farmers g.. , I iY/*1 throughout the country, tramping wt,nhl soon cease, ami mun}* ??ltj.-r.-s compelled to go to work. Wc tan conceive of no ot! means by which they can bc gotten rid of. The more they are kindly treated und entertained, thc more they ure encouraged to continue (ramping, and the .sooner a cheek is put to their course the better. Iii case they .should refuse to work in return for food ami lodging, or other benefits conferred, where it has been made in advance, cull ill a little assistance, if necessary, and administer a practical re buke, and one that won't bc forgotten. There are u few ignorant anti worthless negroes* about Anderson who still continue io agitate the minds of tho colored people about emigrating to Liberia, thc most prom inent among whom is Elias Terrill. At a meeting hold in thc Greeley Institute on Saturday lust, of which this worthy was ; ltairiiian, and which was attended by about fifteen town negroes, it was decided to cull another meeting to be held at the same plat t; on Friday, thc Pith inst., "to consider the great question of Liberia, their Father land," to which the colored people of thc whole County are invited. Wc sincerely hope, howevur, that they will pay no atten tion whatever to thu foolish cli'orts that are behm made by these ignoramuses lo make them dissatislied willi their lot. We advise them to slay at linnie, and to give their at tention to siHiuring homes for another year, which is ut present tho most important juestlon to them, for their chances to ucl to Liberia, even if they desired to go, is about ns good as their chances to gel to the moon. The only thing we see to bc accom plished by these fellows is thu distraction of thu minds of thc colored people from their work, and causing them to neglect the im portant matter of making arrangements for imothcr year. If Terrill really desires to go, wc do not doubt that if bc will make thc L'flbrt beean secure sufficient funds by do nation to defray bis expenses, provided he will promise never to return. We ore ready t.) give our portion, and will consider it as doing oar country service. We would remind our readers of the advertisement in our columns of thc Mc Sinith Music House. Kin ron : A few thought* on thc sub? joct of "han. lilacs" may not be out of nlncc : especially if persona reading them would "govern themselves accordingly." Who of us do not feel, to a greater or less degree, the press ure of the present hard times? Indeed, so sensibly is this fell that every one is ready to ask for the cause and remedy. Various causes, no doubt, aro combined in producing i-flect* so much to be deplored. Among them we may men tion, this year, short crops, from natural causo, as storms, rust, drought and so on. In many parts of the County these were SJ great as tu reduce Hie yields of the cereals und cotton to one-half, or even lev?. The decline in the price of our leading staple, cotton, is ?motlier unexpected cause of the financial pressure. With the adjustment of European troubles, last spring farmers flut tered themselves they would realize a fuir price for their cotton this fall, but their hopes have been disappointed. Old debts, contracted under high prices, press also liku a mighty incubus upon many, who lind it hard indeed at preset prices for cot ton to pay oil' tho same. Unreliable labor comes in also for a share in producing bard limes. It is a sad truth that our labor sys tem is exceedingly defective. Among many laborers a common e.rrur prevails that six or eight months in the year is suflicicut time lo make a good living. Industry, care, ?con otu y and a good "holding on" to work in- at a premium. lint there is yet another fruitful cause of liard times: thc yielding to thc disposition solomon to us all to buy too much. We nugn i fy our imaginary wants, and either greatly strain our credit or deplete unnee fc-sarily our purses. Fashion urges to ex icssive purchases, and its devotees sink in mancini ruin. And it were well if the ruin yas confind to the devotees ; but rarely so, "or they generally tlrag others with them, dany men lind it exceedingly difficult, to ; cop their families "in the fashions." They, ?ko all other men, love their wives ?md hildren, and dislike to sec tlicni behind in he latest styles, heucetbey risk their earthly di in trying to keep them up. Often while ho family rejoices over the now, line goods ust purchased, ho whose duty it is to foot bc bill ia almost ready to weep over tho ?loouiy prospects for funds to do so. Wives, laughters and sons, let ull foolish fashions inti extravagancies go. Let the originators if thc many foolish styles and fashions ;athcr ns few followers as possible, and soon bey will come lo you for work and bread, tidies and gentlemen both, in thc full sense if those terms, can be ladies and gentlemen rit bout dancing all their timo to thc costly' iittsic of fashion. Dress excesses uro fell owed often also by table extravagancies, t ts hurd for s-onie people to get out of the ray of high, luxuriant living. If, how vcr, you make it at home, und don't have 0 go in debt fur it, you may afford to live veli. Again, vfesay we buy too much.
