His wisdom reigns Supremo confessed ; His power is infinite; His lovo Thy deopest, fondest dreams nbore; So Trust and Rest. Under tho Supervision of il?o KxoouUva Committee of I'omonu (innige. Tho "Grasshopper Commission." Sometime ago Congress made an ap propriation of $18,000 to defray the ex penses of a Commission to investigate the character and habita of thc locust, that committed such fearful depredations in the Southern and Western States within the last few years. Thia is allow ing BOH?O commendable interest i'? be half of agricultural progress. The Com mission has published its first report, from which it appears that an area of over 2,000,000 of square t.:iles has been occasionally visited by these insects since 181S-of which the last three, in 187:1, 1874 and 1870, were much the most de structive, having damaged the country to thc estimated value of ?2OO,000,000. Tlie Commission thinks that thu insects como from large, hot, burren wastes, and the prevention of their appearance may depend upon the settlement and cultiva tion of thc Handy plains of thc West. They recommend certain measures of prevention to be observed by tho farmers residing in that section, which lina been condensed by tho Hartford Post, an fol lows : It has been ascertained that, ns a rule, the invading swarms do not make their anpearpneo lu. the Mississippi valley un-| til thc latter part of July or first of Au gust. By thu? time wheat, barley and oats havo generally reached perfection and boen harvested. Thia fact renders it possible to antic?pala thone swarm* and prevent serious injury by relying chiefly upon these crops when there is reaso" to fear their incursions. And if tho hatch ing grounds of tho insects be definitely ascertained, and tho niiiirmnl cororn mont, by meanB of th? aignni service corps or otherwise, will ta?re measures to give notice in auvanco cf heavy/ egg doposits in Hu ; area, tho farmers, Im planting small grains, may thus provont any serious injury when tue}' urrivo. It is also advised that greater attention bo paid to grazing. Tho grasshoppers do not do much injury to grass, ana heneo stockraisers and herdsmen cnn look with comparativo indifference on timo visita tions. There are other remedies sug gested, such as the encouragement of ani mals and insects that feed upon the pests, thc destruction of the eggs or unfledged insects by harrowing, plowing, tramping, irrigation, burning, etc., nnd aovoral pre ventive measures against the maturo or winged, IDScCtS. Fertilizers. There ?3 nothing connected with agri culture more important than the econom ical use of fertilizers On every planta tion nlmost tons of the most valuable clements of fertilization are annually lost to tho farmer by negligence or a want of timo to save them. Wc are in too great a hurry to attend to such small matters -that is the truth of it. Nothing should bo wasted on a farm, and as thc busy season is now pretty well over and that crop (cotton) which always takes up all our time off bund, every moment should bo used to collect materials to mnko tho "two blades of grass and tho two .ears of corn grow whero only ono grow before." Cleau out your fence corners, rnko up all tho litter about yards, save your leached ashes, coal dust, refuse of every sort, and prepare for composting. Ashes should not bo put in tho compose heaps. It pays best to make a special application of them. No hotter m nu uro can bo fou->d for tho gardon, the potato, or tho f ? tree. Don't waste your cotton seed and don't sell it. It is capital food for your cattle, and tho manure made from cattle fed on cotton seed is ono of tho most valuable. Experiments mndo by celebrated English chemists go to dem onstrate that tho manu*"* made from a ton of hay is worth $10. JO ; from a ton of clovorj $15 ; from a ton of oat straw, $4.5G i from a ton of wheat strrw, $4.15 ; from a ton of wheat, $11 ; from a ton of com, $10 ; from a ten of potatoes, $2.83 ; from a ton of turnips, $1.83 ; from a ton of cotton seed cake, $43.33 ; from a ton of linseed cake, $30.65. If there bo any truth in analysis, it is plain from this table that cotton seed is richer in fertiliz ing elements than any other product on .no farm. Every partido of manure from the feeding ot cotton seed should be saved, and yet on nine f- .ms out of ten this seed is fed on tho ground in opon lots during the winter, exposed to tho air nnd rain, and no care taken in tho preservation. Cotton seed with a littlo meal or bran is ono of tho best articles of food for cattle or sheep, and should never bo wasted. It is worth noting too, while wo are on the subject of fertilizers, to no ?:_.I.-. ?u-___- r-_ .. ...WV ?Ul.V wuu UIUUUIU nulli MiU Ut n m-.ll/ straw or oat straw is worth $4.16 or $5.50. while on nine farms oat of ten you will find at this season of the year tons of wheat or oat Btiaw which have been left in the field where tho "travelling thresh ed' cleaned out last summer's crop. Wo have heard of old farmers, who said they took all pains to make manure and to raise food for their stock, say that they had never fed a handful of wheat straw because they thought it had no strength in it. Everything that you can put in ?'our yard or stables io absorb thc fai?ll zing properties will pay handsomely. WHAT Biuoa ACCOMPLISH.-Tho swallow, swift and night-hawk are the guardians of the atmosphere. They check the increase of insects which other wise would overload* it. Woodpeckers, creepers and chickadees aro the guar dians of tho trunks of trees. Warblers and flycatchers protect the foliage. Blackbirds, crows, thrushes and larks protect the SUJ&CC of the soil. Snipe and woodcock protect tho soil under toe surface. Each tribe lias its respective duties to perform in the economy of na ture ; ami it is an undoubted fact that if thc birds wero swept off tho face of the earth; man could not live upon it ; Vcg? Utioti would wither and die; insects would become ?o numerous that no liv ing thine could withstand their attacks. Tho vrh?lctalo destruction occasion?? by grasshoppers, which havo lately devasta ted ?ho western part of tho United States, is caused by tho thinning out of tho hirds, such as grouse, prairie-hens, &c, which fed upon them. The -treat and ines timable service done to the farmer, gard ner and florist by the birds is only be coming known by ?ad experience. Sparo tho. birds and save your fruit, the little corn and fruit taken by thom is more than compensated by the quantities of noxious insects they destroy. The long persecuted crow lins been found by actual experiment to do far more good by the vast quantities of grubs and insects bc devours than the few grains of corn be [mils up. Ho is one one of the farmer's >e:it friends. What ls to bc Done I 1. Child two years obi bas an attack of croup at night. Doctor at a distance. What Ls to bo done? The child should be immediately un dressed, and put in a warm bath. Then give an emetic, composed of one part of nntimony wino to two of ipecac. The dose la a teaspoonful. Scrape ?ron rust off anything, mix with ?ann water, and give in large draughts frequently. Nev er give large draughts of Huid until those given before have been vomited, because tho stomach will not contract properly if filled, and the object is to git rid of the poison as quickly ns possible. G. Young lady sin in a draught, and conies home with a bad sore throat. Wrap flannel around the throat, keep out of draughts and sudden changes of atmosphere, and every half hour take a {linell of chloride of potash, place it on Ibo tongue, and allow it to dissolve in tho mouth. 7. Carefully undress the child, lay it ou a bcd, on its breast, us the back is scalded, bc sure all draughts arc excluded, then dust over the parts scalded bi-carbonatc cf siida, lay ::::!s!i:> over it, then ?nuke ti tent, by plncing two boxes with a board over them in Ibo bed, to prevent the cov ering from pressing on tho scald; cover Up warmly. 9. Mower cubs driver's leg as bc is thrown from his seat. Put a ligb* bandage around tho limb, above the cut, slip a cork under It, in the direction of a line drawn from the inner part of the knee to a little outside of the groin. Draw tho edges of thc cut togelh witb sticking plaster. 10. Child lias a bad earache. Dip n plug of cotton wool in olive oil, warm it, and placo in tho ear. Wrap up tho head and keep out of draughts. 11. Youth goes to skate ; falls through the ice ; brought home insensible. Strip the body am! rub it dry ; then rub it with n warm blanket and place it in a warm bed, in a warm room. Clennso away froth and mucus from tho nose and mouth. Apply warm bottles, bricks, etc., to thc arm-pits, between thc thighs, nial to the soles of the feet. Bub tho surface of the body with the band encased in n warm dry worsted sock. To restore breathing, closo ibo nostrils and breathe steadily into thu mouth ; inflate tho lungs till tho breast bo raised n little, then set tho nostrils free, and press gent ly on tho chest until signs of life ap pear. Then give a warm drink, mid put to bed. Do not give up hope for al least three hours after tho accident. 12. Child gets sand in his eye. Bi;'co your forefinger on tho check bono, having tho child before you Then draw up your finger, and you will probably be able to remove it ; but if you cannot get at tho sand this way, repent tho operation while you have a knitting needle laid against the eyelid.', this will turu tho lid inside out, and then the saud may bo removed with a silk handker chief.
