Borr and Hamilton. I their FAMOUS DUEL, RESULTING IS the j death op hamilton. .f. . The duel bet ween Aaron Burr and Al exanderHamilton was fought early on - the morning of July 11, 1804. The pre-! liminary- correspondence had begun on the 20th of June, W?liam P. Van Ness | being the friend of Burr, ana Judge Nathaniel Pendleton acting for Hamil? ton. The challenge was at length given by Burr and accepted, and the parties . prepared for the meeting. Hamilton ex . .ecuteaJiis will, stating several reasons why he should not fight a duel, but still -yielding to the prevailing sentiments and demand of the time. Burr, the night be? fore,' wrote some letters; and* then lay down and slept tiU.morningl' : The spot selected 'for the combat was at Weehawken, in Hudson country New Jersey, about two miles and a halt above Hoboken, and opposite Sixty-fourth street, of Newj York. It was a quiet nook in the rock above tie North river, shore. Ten full paces were measured, and then they cast lots for the choice- of position and to decide who should give the - word, .General Hamilton's second won in .both .' cases. The,pistols were, then, loaded in presence: of all, and the principals placed. Hamilton's position faced the river.' and v the city. . It was unfortunate, for the sun ? and the {dancing waves mighthavetnter ferred. . ,But in. the, end it. mattered: not. Burr' was faced toward the "heights ??der which they stood. Judge^ Pe,ndleton-JAandQd,A? pjgtol to HamitoeTyafid aiteiS:- i3*iO "Will you have tiie haix.-spring set ?" "Not this time," was the quiet answer. Pendleton then explained the Alles un? der-which they were to fire, as follows : "The parties being stationed, the second who gives the word shall ask them : whether they are ready. Upon being answered in the affirmative, he shall say 'Present r After this the parties snail :<j)resent, and fire when-they please.! If one fires before the other,' the opposite ' second shall say, 'One, two, three?fire P and he shall then fire, or lose his fire.'* Pendleton asked if.they were, ready. Upon being answered, be gave the word: "Present 1" Both parties presented, and i fired in succession. The seconds did not ;? precisely agree as to the succession'' of; : ahofs, but'it is believed that Burr fired' ? first, and that.Hamilton's shot was invoK .?? untary. Colonel Burr's shot took effect, and Hamilton fell almost instantly against the ho wider, his pistol going off at the moment Burr theradranced toward;. Hamilton withwair and gesture expreesive of re fret. .But fc^ing urged from the field by is friend, he turned about and withdrew, his friend shielding him with an um ; l>iella to. prevent recognition by the boat? men arid, surgeon, who were then ap? proaching., .Burr returned heme to break? fasts ?'* "*"Hamilton's second sprang forward and ~ lifted, jhe General, to a: sitting, posture. The ball had struck a middle oi a rib and . fractured it. and then lodged in Ids spine. Dr. Hosack says: "His countenance of ? death I shall never forget. He had at that instant just strength enough to say: ?This is a mortal wound, doctor/ when i he'sank away and became to all appear? ances life,1 eis. We therefore lifted him up and carried him out of the woods to the margin of the bank where the bargemen aided us ? in conveying him into toe boat,' which immediately put outn Before they reached the; opposite shore he revived, and from a remark he made sue med apparently unconscious that bis pistol had teen"discharged.
