THE INTELLIGENCER. LOCAL. MATTERS. EIGHTH Mm FAIR! FLATTERING OPENING. GREAT INTEREST MANIFESTED. It is with the greatest pleasure that we are enabled to announce that this year's ex? hibition at the Fair Grounds is in every respect equal to the most sanguine expecta? tions of its most enthusiastic friends, and exceeds in the quantity as well as the quality of articles entered the exhibition of last year. The entries in nearly all the depart? ments exceed those of last year. f The display in the needle and fancj * work and household departments is proba? bly better than it has e^er been before, and it is most gratifying ta see the improvement in the manu&ctiirerV, and field crop depart? ments. The ejitrip^ in the live stock de? partment we're *not concluded up to the time we wer^ to press, but the promise for a fine display in all the divisions of this most im^portjnt branch of the exhibition was gcK jd. We -were particularly impressed with * fa ?--^erior apf>earattce t>f the articles, man .y of which show that *hey were pre Pa' expressly for this exhibition, thus e .vincing a growing general interest in the Fair, which mutt be quite agreeable to the officers and directors, as it is certainly a mark of confidence and approval of their, management. The committees were quite busy on Wednesday making their investiga? tion of the articles presented, as under the change in the regulations they are compell? ed to hand in their awards this morning in? stead of on to-morrow. The attendance on Wednesday was good for the first day of the Fair, and the indications are that there will I be very large crowds present on to-day and to-morrow. The Spartenburg Cornet Band is in attendance and their excellent music adds much to the enjoyment of those in at? tendance. Governor Chamberlain is expected to ar? rive in Anderson this afternoon, and while here, will be the guest of Judge Reed. He has consented to deliver an address upon agricultural topics during the Fair, and it has been arranged for Mr. B. F. Crayton, the President of the Fair Association, to introduce him to those in attendance on Friday at noon, so that all present at that time will have an opportunity of hearing the Governor's speech. He returns to Columbia on Saturday, we understand, and we hope his brief sojourn in our midst may prove a pleasant occasion for him. The trotting matches will come off on Friday, and the laughable ontertainment of a mule race will be afforded those present on that day. The exercises of Friday will conclude with a tournament, at which a number of knights are expected to ride. It will no doubt be a very pleasant affair, as each par? ticipant is determine^ to crown the Queen of Love and Beauty," while only one of the number can enjoy that privilege. We trust there will be a. large attendance both days, and can assure those who come that they will enjoy themselves. BSEEF ?EJTTI05. The young ladies of Anderson are advised to set good examples, because the young men are always following them. _ The marble-players of the summer months have changed their recreation to 'possum hunting for the winter, and we learn they are catching quite a number. .'Possum and taters are said to be fit for a prince. The yor. ng ladies of the Baptist congrega? tion at Wiliiamston presented the pulpit of the Church there with a handsome Bible on Saturday last. It was acknowledged in an appropriate and beautiful addeess from the pastor. Four hnndred and sixty-five bales of cot " ton were shipped from the Anderson depot, over the G. & C. R. R., one day last week. The company has been prompt in carrying off the cotton, which has accumulated rather more rapidly than last year. The juries were -discharged last Friday from attendance on Court, and the Court adjourned on Tuesday. All the business ready for trial was transacted and the orders desired in the other cases granted. Messrs. Diwer & Burdgess are engaged in erecting a building upon the southern corner of the lot owned by Dr. Diwer, which will be nsed as their machine sIiods. We are glad to learn that they have met with de? served success in tneir new enterprise. Mr. H. B. Fant, Agent of the Greenville and Columbia Railroad, informs us that he is authorized to sell round trip tickets to Charleston and hack for $15.00, good to re? turn within twenty days, and also to Colum? bia and back for $8.50, good for the same length of time. We would call attention to the advertise? ment of Mr. G. F. Tolly which appears else? where. He has one of the most extensive stocks ever kept in Anderson, and what is better he is selling at the most reasonable prices. It is only necessary to call in order to be convinced. The Baptist Church at Anderson are pre? paring to make extensive repairs and im? provements upon their handsome church edifice. They have inaugurated a system of payment in monthly installments by which the needed amount will be realized by spring, at which time the work is to begin. Mr. J. Earle Lewis, of this County, was an extensive exhibitor of stock at the Georgia State Fair in Macon last week, and we are pleased to hear of his successful competition for the premiums offered. He received the largest number of premiums obtained by any one in the stock department?five, which amounted in value to one hundred and seventy-five dollars. His stock is on exhibition at our County Fair now progress? ing in Anderson, and no doubt equal or greater success awaits him bore. The members of the Anderson Bar en? joyed quite a pleasant evening at Judge Reed's on Friday last. They were invited to sup' with the Judge, who had been hold? ing the Anderson Court during the week. The usual mirth incident to the assembling of a set of gentlemen to spend a social even? ing together was indulged by those present on this occasion, and by none more heartily and pleasantly than the Judge himself. It was an enjoyable evening. Do not forget that the Anderson Theatri? cal Company will render the highly enter? taining and laughable Irish drama, "Handy Andy" and the entertaining and amusing farce, "My Turn Next," in the Masonic Hall to-night; and "Handy Andy" with the domestic drama, "The Toodles," on to? morrow evening in the same hall. Reserved seats, 75 cents; back seats, 50 cents. The entertainment is given for rhe benefit of the Carolina Collegiate Institute at this place, and we hope it will receive a liberal patron? age. The Greenville & Columbia Railroad is now carrying cotton from Walhalla to Charleston, for $3.25 per bale. They carry it from Anderson to Charleston for $3.50. The distance from Walhalla is thirty-three i miles farther, and 3 et the freight is twenty five cents per bale less than from ?*. It is about time to call upon the Republic party to enact the laws to prevent Sgf 'discriminations in freights as they' pruadt to do in their platform of principles, ^ sxtmmer. Anderson ships a much Ifljp* amount of cotton than "Walhalla, and iff* favoritism is to be shown by the raflro^ it .should be to that place which giW1* the most business. We do not objectto^ low rates given to Walhalla, but it i* higher rate imposed on Anderson to ff?1C? we demur. It ought to he corrected. | TOWF MEETTiTG.
