THE INTELLIGENCER. LOCAL. MATTERS. PEBSOHAL MENTION. Col. J. L. Black, of Charleston, arrived In town on Monday evening. He la on his usual tour through the upper counties, and seems in the enjoyment of excellent health and spirits. Gen. Stephen D. Lee returned to Anderson last week, and met with a warmer reception from his numerous friends. He organ ized the Local Board of the Alabama Gold Life Insurance Co., and persons interested in life insurance can obtain any information want? ed from members of the Board. Mr. George H. Hancock, the general trav? eling agent of the Sunny South, was in our town a few days ago. The paper he repre? sents is one of the best ever published in the South, and we are glad to learn that it is meeting with splendid success. It is printed In Atlanta, Ga. I BBIET MENTION.' The Baptist pulpit on last Sabbath morn- I ing was filled by Rev. P. A. Bell, a student of the Theological Seminary at Greenville, "who preached a finished and excellent ser tnon. The proprietors and employees of the In? telligencer office are uuder many obligations to Mr. Wm. Holmes for his kindly remem? brance in sending them a bushel of fine peaches last week. The usual Sabbath School celebration was held in the Baptist Church on last Sabbath afternoon, (it being the fifth Sunday in Au? gust), and the various schools of the town participated in the exercises by their presence. Addresses were made by Gen. S. D. Lee, E. B. Murray and Rev. P. A. Bell. The Pleasant Hill School, near Broad mouth Creek in Honea Path Township, had an exhibition on the evening of Friday Au gust 27th. There was a good attendance, and we are informed the exercises were cred? itable to the scholars and their teacher, Miss Nora Roberta. Mr. N. W. Lafoy baa been appointed con- j doctor of the Blue Ridge Division of the I Greenville and Columbia Railroad, vice Mr. I T. Douglass Sloan, who has resigned with a view of engaging in mercantile pursuits in I Atlanta, Ga. Mr. Lafoy will make an effi-1 oient and faithful officer. Messrs. Divvcr <fe Burdges, of the Ander- j eon Machine Works, are driving ahead with commendable energy and activity. These gentleman are receiving a liberal encourage? ment from the people, and their business is destined to become an important feature in J our town. Success to all such enterprises. Our young men are coming to the front in I business circles. Messrs. Bell, Prevost <fc Cunningham announced their copartnership j last week, and to-day we have the pleasure J of introducing Messrs. Ligon & Hill to the public. All of these gentlemen are worthy I and energetic citizens, whose prosperity and success may be reckoned as already assured. We would again state to the public that all notices from Administrators and Execu? tors mutt he paid for in advance of their inser? tion in this paper. We cannot deviate from this rule, and hope no one will ask us to do so. Any person who looks over our books under the credit system will fully under- J stand the reason which compels a uniform enforcement of the cash rule in regard to j these advertisements. G. W. Marct, Trial Justice, acting Coroner, held an inquest over the bodies of Elijah Allen, colored, and his son, Ceorge, who were drowned in Mr. W. W. Holland's mill ]>ond on the 15th of August. Tl ere were I no marks of violence about them, and the jury rendered a verdict of accidental drown? ing. It is not known how they were drowned, but it is probable the son got into deep water and in an effort on the part of J the father to save him, both lost their lives. We are requested to announce that there will be a social pic nie at the town Creek Academy on Saturday next. Addresses are J expected on the occasion from Messrs. T. D. j Kennedy and E. B. Murray npon some subject connected with education. The I new school house at that place has just been completed, and will be occupied by j Mr. C. W. Moore's school, the patrons of which have gotten up the pic nie for next Saturday. The Sunday School Union of the Third Union District of the Saluda Baptist Associa? tion met at Mountain Creek Church on last Saturday morning and adopted a new Con? stitution. Maj. P. C. v. Borstel declined a re-election as Superiutendant of the Union, j and the following officers were elected: L. P. Smith, Superiutendant; Levi Burriss, Vice-Superintcndant; Wm. Riley, Clerk. The following persons compose the Execu? tive Committee : E. B. Murray, M. B. Hem- j bree, Levi Burriss, Rev. Jacob Burriss and Rev. E. R. Carswcll. The meeting was a pleasant and harmonious one. and will be held next time with the Union meeting at Cross Roads' Church. During last week we havo visited the cot-, ton patches of Messrs. C. A. Reed, B. P. Crayton and J. C. Keys. Each of these gen? tlemen has a "brag" acre of the Cheatham cotton, and it is difficult to tell who deserves the premium; therefore, we will not take j sides until after the picking. The first named gentleman also has a very fine field of com, the yield of which is variously esti- j mated at from thirty to fifty bushels j>er acre. The yield per acre of the Cheatham J cotton is estimated at from three to five j thousand pounds of seed cotton. These are examples of progressive farming which our j people would do well to imitate. Good seed, thorough cultivation, and a liberal use or fertilizers is the secret of their success. AGUE CONQUEROR; VO QUININE, NO ARSENIC, NO F0I80N8. This is strong language, as physicians and Chemists have for years tried to compound a preparation that would entirely cure Fever and AorE without the use of strong medi- I rides such as Quinine, Arsenic and other poisons injurious to the system. There is no case of Fev.er and Ague, Intermittent or Bilious Fevers, Congestive Chills, Night Sweats, Liver complaints, 4c, that this remedy will not cure at once and permanent? ly. It purifies the Blood, Liver, Spleens, and all secreatory organs so effectually that the Chills will not return during the season, even when persons have had them for years. Sold by WILHITE &?
