Suicide.?On Sunday afternoon last, a man, named John W. Settlemeyer, committed sui? cide, at- his boarding-house, on laurel street, by shooting himself with a pistol. He was a steady, industrious workman?-a carpenter? and has been in the employ of the Charlotte and South Carolina Railroad Company for about ten years. He has, to use the language of a fellow-workman, "been acting strangely for several moyths." He imagined that persons I were trying to defraud him of his money; it is supposed "that his disappointment in a love affair affected him." Mr. Settlemeyer arose from the dinner-table, after partaking of but a *light repast, proceeded to his room, fastened the door, and shortly afterwards two reports of a pistol was heard. The occupants of the house immediately proceeded to the room, where they found Mr. S: stretched upon the floor, dead, with a bullet wound in the. upper part of his chest, hear the neck. The first shot;evidently missed, as a bullet-hole was discovered in the partition. Mr. S. bled.but little, his death must have been instantaneous. A paper, in the form of a will, was found on the bed, be? queathing his property to a young ladv in North Carolina, to whom, it is believed, he was sincerely attached. An inquest was held by Coroner Coleman, at which the above facts were elicited. Mr. S. was, we believe, a native of North Carolina, and about thirty years of age.? Columbia Phcenix. A Tribute to the Memory of Mrs. Tabitha j KcFall. There's gloom within that ancient home, For hearts are broken, sad and lone, Their lovely one has plumed her wings, And now angelic songs shu sings. Oh, how impatient to be free; Her Master's face she longed to see, Her youthfal feet well knew the Way That, led to an eternal day. . Her spotless character shall shed A lasting fragrance where they tread, And in their loneliness and gloom, Shall light their pathway to the tomb. The.lovely wreath which friendship gave, Shall wither o'er the sunlit grave, But amaranthine buds ontwine ? Around her in that fadeless clime. Oh, stricken ones, wh? sadly'Weep, " Near her you, too, shall sweetly sleep, And Soon her loving arms embrace, Those -loved ones all how saved by grace. And then, oh, then, in yond<a- clime, ?> ;'Mid wondrous ecstacles su blime, r .What Tjeals of. rapture shall 1? given ? ? To llim who tuned their harps in heaven. Tribute of Bespect.
