The Eichmond Whig is much pleased to observe an increased activity in the canvass of that State, and to learn that the Liberals are becoming warmed up. ? Bev. J. I. Bonner, President of the Due West Female College, has declined accepting the Presidency of the Female College in Char? lotte, N. C., which was lately tendered him. ? Dr. B. W. Gibbes has been elected Pro? fessor of Anatomy and Surgery in the Univer? sity of South Carolina, to fill the vacancy oc-; casioned by the resignation of Dr. John T. Darby. ? Hon. Willis B. Machen has been appoin? ted by' the Governor of Kentucky to succeed Garrett Davis in the United States Semite. He was a member of the Confederate Congress, and has but recently had his disabilities removed. ? Mr. C M. McJunkin, of the Working I Christian, proposes to commence the publica? tion of a new temperance paper in Columbia j When 2,000 suscribers are obtained. The sub? scription will be $1.25 a year, or five copies to one address $5. ?The Patrons of Husbandry met in con? vention at the Fair Grounds in Columbia on yesterday, to ojjranized a State Grange for South Carolina. There are seventy-eight subor? dinate Granges in this State, which will make the largest State Grange now in existence, ex? cept that of Ohio. ? The Governor has pardbJMjd Theodore DeHay, a colored citizen of Faifneld, who was convicted last March of aiding a prisoner to escape, and sentenced to ten years' imprison? ment in the Penitentiary. DeHay was acting as jailor of Fairfield Connty when the allega? tion was made against him. ? Fifty citizens of Pitt County, N. C, were carried to Goldsboro on Monday last, upon a charge of obstructing United States officials in the discharge of their duties. After a long and. patient hearing, the cases were all dis? missed by the United States Commissioner be? fore whom they were arranged, that officer characterizing the charges as contemptible. ? Florian H. Frost, a colored member of the Legislature from Williamsburg County, died last week in Charleston, after a brief ill? ness, in the 25th year of his age. He was re? garded as one of the few upright members, and was conspicuous for his opposition to measures of corruption and profligacy, being particularly active in the impeachment movement against Scott last winter. Frost was a fearless and eloquent speaker, and just such a man as re? flected credit upon the colored race by his hon? est and straightforward course in public affairs. ANNOUNCEMENTS. For Solicitor.
