His long career of honor and usefulness; his hearty "a6ceptanceof reconstruction at a time when his influence was very valuable to oar untried party in South Carolina; his successful State .administration while Governor; his firm, up? right, fearless conduct since his election to the bench; the fact that no Ku Klux was heard of while he Was Governor, and that although his mountain district was just the place to expect them, not an instance of midnight riding or the semblance of Ku Kluxism has appeared since he has been Judge; his national reputation, which it is claimed, would lend strength to the party in other States; all these considerations are urged as reasons why he would be the most available candidate in the party. Crawford, of this city, on -which he had experimented with various fertilizers, and without hesitation pro? nounce the acr? on which Etiwan No. 2 had been used, to be the best acre of cotton we have ever seen. Mr. Crawford informed us that he had already gathered about 3,000 pounds from it, and it was his and our opinion that he would gather from 1,200 to 1,500 pounds more. The land did not appear to us to be superior cotton land, being low and damp, but had been highly culti? vated. The plant where the Etiwan No. 2 had been used, was free from rust, green and full of fruit, whilst that where the Wando and Carolina had been used, was, in places, badly rusted, and the stalks dead.
