H., S^C., January 7. 18ft9 2S Office of Udolplio Wolfe, SOLE IMPORTER OF TUE - V*7 '"? ? - "' Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps, 22 BEAVER STREET, NEW YORK, November G, 1SGS. ?Hb the People of-Hhe Southern ?States : When the pur?, medicinal restorative, now so ?widely known as Wolfe's Scliiedam Schnapps, was ?introduced into the world under the endorsement of 'four ^thousand leading* iuc'mber3 of the medical .profession some 20 years ago, it.s proprietor was well aware (hat ic coflld not wholly escape the ?penalty attached to ull new and useful prepara? tions. He, therefore, endeavored to invest if with 'Strongest possible safeguardrtgainst counterfeiters, nnd ie render all attempts to pit;rte-it difficult and dangerous. It was submitted to distinguished chemists for analysis, and pronounced by tliem the purest spirit e*er i^anuiacturcd. Its purity and properties h&vfhg been thus ascertained, samples of the article wen: forwarded lo ten thousand phy? sicians, including all the leading practitioners in the United Slates, fjr purposes of experiment. A ?circular, requesting a trial of the .preparation and a report of ihcreauU, accompauied each specimen. ?Four thousand of the most eminent medical men in the Union promptly responded. Their opin . ious of. Jhe article were unanimously favorable. Such a preparation they saic, had long been wanted <t>y the proles-ion, as no reliance could be placed ?on the ordinary liquors of commerce, all of which were more or less adult orated, and therefore unlit for medical purposes. The peculiar excellence and strength of the oil of janitor, which formed one of the prrwerpnl ingredfents of the Schnapps, to? gether with an unalloyed character of the alcohol id element, give it, in the estimation of the faculty, a marked superiority over every other diffusive ?timuiaut as a diuretic, tonic and restorative. ThciO satisfactory credentials from professional ?men of the highest rank were published in a eon .?df?sed form, aud enclosed with each bottle of the Schnapps, as one of the guarantees of its genuine? ness. _ Other precautions against fraud were also adopted: a patent was obtained for tJic article, "the Libel was copyrighted, a fac simile at -t-he pro .pnetor's autograph signatui>o was attached to each ?label and-cover, his name aud that of thcpiepara tion were embossed on the bottles, and the corks were sealed with his private seal. No article bad ever been sold in this country under the name of Schnapps prior to the introdactiun of Wolfe's . Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps, in 18ol ; and the label was deposited, as his trade mark, in the Uni? ted State? District (Join t for the Southern District ?of'"New York that year. It might be supposed by persons unacquainted with the daring character of the piraies who prey upon tho reputation of honorable merchants by ?vending deleteriotrs rrash under their name, that the protection no carefully thrown around these ?Schnapps would have precluded the introduction and sale of counterfeits. They seem, however, to have only stimulated the rapacity of impostors. The trade mark of the proprietor has been stolen; ?the indorsement which his Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps alone received from the medical profes ?km-his been claimed by mcudacious humbugs; his labels and bottles have been imitated, Iiis ad 'rertisements^p.araphrased, his circulars copied, and worse than all, dishonorable retailers, after dispo? sing of the genuine contents of his bottles, have ?filled them up with cotnn.o:i gin, the most delete? rious of all liquors, and thus made his name aud 'brand a cover for poison. The public, the medical profession and the sick, fttt "whom the Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps is prescribed as a remedy, arc equally interested with the proprietor in the detection and suppres? sion r.f these nefarious practices. The genuine article, manufactured at. the establishment of the lundersigned, in Schiedam, Holland, is distilled -.from a barley ?(>(? tho finest quality, and flavored ,<with an essential extract of the berry of the Ital? ian juniper, of unequalled purity. By a process unknown in the preparation of any other liquor, it is freed from every scrimonious and corrosive .?element. Complaints have been received from the leading ^physicians and families in the Southern States of 4hesale of cheap imitations of the Schiedam Aro? matic Schunpps iu those markets ; and travellers, Trho are in the habit of using it as an autiilole to jthe baneful influence of .unwholesome river water, .testify that cheap gin, put up in Schiedam bottles, 5s frequently palmed off upon the uuwury. The Agents of the undersigned have been requested to institute inquiries on the subject, and to forward ,to him the name:) of such parties as they may as? certain to be engaged in the atrocious system of deception. In Conclusion, the undersigned would say thttt be has produced, from under the hands of ithe mo>rt distinguished men of science in America, proofs unanswerable of !he purity and medicinal .excellence of the Scheidam Aromatic Schnapps: that he has expended many thousand dollars in ?surrounding it with guarantees and safeguards, ?whioli he designed should prntect the public and himself against fraudulent imitations; that lie has shown it to be the only liquor in the world that e*a he uniformly depended upon as unadulterated; that he has challenged investigation, analysis, comparison, and experiment, in all its forms; and from every orde.il the preparation which bears Iiis name, seal and trade mark, has come off trium? phant. He therefore feels it a duty he owes to his fellow-citizens generally, to the medical pro-" fession and the sick, lo denounce and expose the charlatans who counterfeit these evidences of identity, and he calls upon the press and the pub? lic to aid him in his efforts to remedy so great an evil. The following letters and certificates from the leading physicians aud chemists of this city will prove to the reader that all goods sold by the un? dersigned arc all they arc represented to be. CDOLPIiO WOLFE. I feel bound lo say, that I regard your Schnapps as being ir every respect pre-eminently pure, aud deserving of medical patronage. ?! all events, it is the purest possible article of Holland Gin, here? tofore Unobtainable; and as such may be safely pre? scribed by physicians. DAVID L. MOTT. M. D.. Pharmaceutical Chemist, New York. 2G PinrStkekt, Sew York, Nov. 21, 18G7. UuoiPlto Woi.fe, Esq., Present: Dkar Stu: 1 have uiade a chemical examination of a sample of your Schiedam Schnapps, with the intention of determining if any foreign or injurious substance had been added to the simple distilled spirits. The examination has resulted in the conclusion that the sample contained no poisonous or harmful admixture. I have been unable to discover any trace of the deleterious substances which are em? ployed in the adulteration of liquors. I would not hesitate to rse myself or to recommend to others, for medicinal purposes, the Schiedam Schnapps as an excellent and unobjectionable variety of gin. Yerv respect lull v yours. (Signed,) CllAS. A. SEELY, Chemist. New Yokk, 50 Cedar Strset, November 20, 1EU7. Uoor, rno Woite, Esq., Present: Dear Sin: 1 have submitted to chemical analy? sis two bottles of ".Schiedam Schuapps."' which I took from a fresh package in 3-ottr bonded ware? house, and find, as before, that the spirituous li? quor is free from injurious ingredicni.s or ftilsilicn tiou; that it has the marks of being aged and not recently prepared by mechanical admixture of alco? hol and aromatics. llespcct fully, EU ED. F. MAYER, Chemist. New York. Tuesday, May 1. CnpLruo Wolfe, Esq: Ucab Sir : The want of pure Wines and Liquors for medicinal purposes has been long felt by t he pro? fession, and thousands of lives have been sacrificed by the use of adulterated articles. Delirium tre? mens, and other diseases of the brain and nerves, so rife in this country, arc very rare in Europe, owing, in a great degree, to the difference in the purity "*f the spirits sold. We have tested the several articles imported and sohl by you. including your Gin, which you sell un? der the name of Aromatic Schiedam Schnapps, which wc consider justly entitled to the high repu? tation it has acquired in this country; and from your long experience as a foreign importer, your Bottled Wines and Liquors should muet with the same demand. We would recommend to yon to appoint some of the respectable apothecaries in different parts of the city as agents for the sale of your Brandies and Wiues, where the profession can oblnm the same when needed for medicinal purposes.
