It is-announced, for tho informntion 'of the public, that the Trains on the South Carolina ? Railroad, are now running to "Hopkins' Depot," , twelve miles below Columbia, S. C. - - ECLIPSE. According to the astronomers, a great and .sin? gular eclipse of the Sun will tako place ? to-day, which is visible throughout North America. Be? ginning a few 'rainctes after 8 o'clock, A. M., the greatest obscuration occurs ajt-half-past 9 o'clock, - and the eclipse ends at half-pas I eleven. In many respects, this eclipse is said to bo the most remark? able that will occur iir this section, during the prtsent.century. It will be annular ; that is, the apparent disc of the Moon will not be sufficient to conceal the entire disc of the Sun. Therefore, at all'places where tho eclipse will bo annular, the . border or edge of the Sun's diso will bo seen all around the dark body, of the Moon ; and it will resemble a red-hot ring of iron. At the greatest 'obscuration, several planets and fixed stars will. Lie visible, if the sky be clear.-. Venus will be seen to the west of the Sun, and Jupiter east. Sirius, or the bright Dog Star, will be seen near the wes? tern horizon ; and all other stars of the first inag . nitude, that arc then above the -horizon, will be visible to good eyes, -if the air be very serene. Not many persons have had an opportunity of see? ing the Sun annularly eclipsed, and still a less number have sein it totally eclipsed; thcrcTore, we advise all persons to witness this grand phe? nomena of Nature, for it is very- probable those . who witness the present may never see another. -?-* ? The newspapers report that the-friends of Mr. Jefferson Davis, in Washington, D. C^ recently made upa purse .of six thousand five hundred dol? lars for the benefit of Mrs. Davis and fatnilv. GOGGANS, daughter of Danitl and" 'Emily Goggans, Ncwberry District, died at the residence of her father, on the 18th inst.,of Con? gestive Fever, in the twenty-third year of her age. When the King beheld the handwriting upon the wall, his terror, arose, not from, what he saw, but from what he could not sec: lor he was unable to discern the body to which the hand belonged. It is so in death. Our fears arise, not from what we know, but .from what we do not know. To tho Christian nil things are revealed: the grave is di? vested of its terrors and ''Death is swallowed up in victory." - Several years previous to iicr death the dweased connected herself with the Methodist Episcopal Church. Sho was ever assiduous in promoting the welfare of others; constant in the discharge of ' both spiritual and temporal duties, and true-to her God whom she professed and loved: In her last illness she-was resigned and submissive.. Gather; ing all her strength a few hours before the cold hand of death was laid upon her, she sang " Rest . for tho*.weary ;" and to a friend who stood weep? ing by her. side, she spoke wards of comfort and ?said. "It is-not hard to die.". Of her approaching " dissolution she seemed assured and met her destiny' with 'Christian fortitude; for, amidst, her suffer? ings' and. the strugglo bet?ren life and death, a spirit presided that promptcd^hcr in all things'to ^say -'Thy-will bo done: evon so Father, fo"r so it seems good in thy sight." ^ . As a daughter, she was dutiful aud Wiving ; as a sister, confiding and affectionate; as a friend, alfa blo and constant. Possessed of rar? intelligence *and much amiability,' she was the centre, of many ' hoj)C3 and cho' pride of many friends. In a^few weeks she would have gono to tho hymcnial altar, ' tbero to assume tho duties and responsibilities of lifo fo*r which she was so well qualified by nature and educati6R. But man, l?ko a pendulum, ever vibrates between a smile and a tear. II was othcr wiso determine-' in tho high courts of Heaven, and she was summoned from the unccrtaintics"-and frail.ies of life, to jpia in the marri.tgo supper.of the Lamb. . ? With the family so deeply afflicted many .have shed affection's tear, and- in their bereavement have felt an honc,st sympathy; for, when the young and- tho gifted, the beautiful and the good pass away, sorrows gather on the heart as sink the dews along tlio tlowor. A loving daughter, an af? fectionate s'istor, a constant friend, she is gone; her body to its coffined homo, her spirit to .man? sions-prepared where the wcr.ry arc at r'ffst. Friend after friend departs,. Who has not lost a friend ? ? Thero is no union here of hearts That finds not here an end; ? Wero this 'rail world our final rest, ? Living or dying none were bleat. September 27th, 18G-5. F. aged one "year and nearly five months. Four weeks of patient suffering with Pnucnio nia, at last- freed the struggling spirit from tho frail young body, aud good angels took it home to unending, blissful repose on the bosom of our Father, who has said, "Of such is the Kingdom * of Heaven." While the parents sadly -miss 'their pot lamb from the fold, and the little brother and sister speak of her with fond regret, and the house? hold sigh to greet again their littlo " sunbeam," with her winning ways and sunny smiles, her ba? by prattle aud wee, tottering steps, let them re? member that she is far more blessed than their af * fection could render her in this dark "vale of tears." The pain its little body had already en? dured, and the trials and tho cares incident to'a longer lifo in this poor world, should reconcile the bereaved ?nes to the Divine decree which called her to rest evermore. Sad it wjs to see her br.ight; Violet eyes close'd, and the pale lips of the little one speechless here forever; yet the healing balm may drop into their wounded-hearts, for those eyes arc beholding glo? ries, those lips chantLng praises, whijh only.the redeemed experience in mansions of eternal hap ninesss. Copies of the notes have been preserved and payment stopped. All persons arc therefore warned against trading for or trying to collect them. - - ? There was also another Kote for Twenty-Five Dollars, signed by William Campbell, and no copy having been preserved dates are not rcgollectcd, but it is believed to have borne date in February, 1858.
