Frort the Qretnv?le Mountaineer. M^Jffait?r : It is- understood that our ? State Convention, now in session, will or? der an election for members of Congress to represent the State at the approaching * session, to commence the.first* Monday in December nest. As it is all important that we should be represented '. by men of industry, energy and talent, permit me the use of your coL .. nmns to suggest the name of ono whose friends "have always believed that ho pos? sessed these high qualifications in an emi? nent degree, and who has indeed shown that he possessed them, by his indefatiga? ble efforts in our behalf, both in and'out of Congress,' for several years previous to .the commencement of our late fruitfes3 ? Struggle for independence. I of course allude to Col: John D. Ashmorc,-our" ac v tivo and energetic Representive at the time of secession from the Union. It is well known, to his former constituents that no man had been, more conservative in his political Opinions and-views''than ? Col. Ashmorc, and had more seriou^ ap? prehensions of the reBult of disunion than he did, until the die was east, and wej| were all, compelled to decide one way or the other?cither for the South, or against tho South. Whe"n the 'issue came, al? though dreading and donbtfhg'the result, he gave his whole soul to the.interests of! his section, and with that characteristic energy so well known as belonging to him, he advisod-all to give every effort .to the.causo-of their.country- arid it is well kwewn to many of his numerous*friends,! that if his advipe and counsel hadlbeen folio wed. in most particulars, that results . would have been fa-indifferent. "We un -.derstand that lie has sacrificed nearly his ?11 in the cause -of tho Confederacy,, and tbat,.too,.whcri &e firmly believed and de? nounced the policy adopted by our Con? gress and* Legislative bodies, as utterly nnd hopelessly! 'destructive of our ccrt(se: \ He-gave not ovly ? his material means to j tho support of the Confederacy, abstain ? trig from corrupt, money making, but also time nnd talents in the severest labor to organize the Postal .System throughout tiie'Confcdcracy, and in the Enrollmgser vice,- where he won, in both positionsvthc -highest encomiums from his superiorofB ci^sv He gave up splendid position and ..high hopes of future advancement,-in re? signing his position ii: the United. StMes t'ongress, where* be was winning lanreis every day. and although his first torm of servier had not quite ex;)ired, hehadtfeen ?ilmdfct unanimously re-elected for a sec? ond term of service by a constituency whose confidence ho had completely won, ?ft*t?4to>ffft extent that had even silenced t"f? clamor of hi* personal enemies. Had he followed tho example of our present wvrthv and distinguished President.''by repairing to Washington and taking'his seat in Congress, he would have main Jtjifngt?fad won .-still higher distinction-be fore the -people oJ' the United States, as we have heard him say that the most fiat Jerin"^ promises of promotion were held o\vtfW film-iiy loading ineri-i^v^jiillfrigton, ?if 1>6" would abandon tho South and sup? port the Union, which he rejected with ?wnt'hes-itation and with indignation. . Wo are one of" those who believe Col.' A*h raore has high'claims upon his^old eon fitatuency, and he should bo-rpwarded for his'services arid sacrifices "in the cause of his country, by being restored to his.for? mer position as our Representative. . Wo never voted for Col. Ashmoro iu his for .j?^.elc^ti^n83ras..w5e>^en knew, .little of him personally, but opportunities of wit -.itessing Igis groat energy and industry in the discharge of hu&ihoss duties, and his -high qualifications for office, convince us, that "he is the man above .all others to represent us in the next Congress.. Hjs experience-in and knowledge of Congros, sional business arid-life, gives him'great .ajjvantagosi and. at: this .lime should have ;gr?at weight, in bringing his fellow-citi zensto'his support. -:rWc have understood from CoJ. Ashmoro that he will attach hrm^elf; warmly,-to the great National Democratic .Party and support of the Unforj -nndj pf -the; policy of President .Johnson and his Oahiuet. in resisting the -farther encroachments of the Radical Re? publicans of the North. With such- a representative as we believe Col. A. has made, and will make us, muca good may be ^accomplished in behalf of the South. This police guard will bs voluntary in its organ? ization, and should be composed of none buc dis? creet persons of standing and character in the community, who are willing to render their servi? ces ppompily when the occasion requires.
