The Carolina and Northwestern railroad will remove the company shops from Chester, this state, to Gas tonia,. North Carolina. The buildings at Chester are totally inadequate to the needs of the company, and it is also inconvenient for the headquar ters of the road to be located at that end of the line. It has becik intimated that if the road is extended across the mountain, the location of the shops‘at Gastonia is only temporary, as it would be advisable to have the company’s works either at Lenoir or Hickory. New County Proposed. The latest new county scheme is one to be carved out of portions of Abbeville, Edgefield and Greenwood, to be called Calhoun, with McCormick as the county seat. A petition has been presented to the governor asking that an election be held, and it is alleged to have the necessary number of signers to make it constitutional. This and all other constitutional requirements will be examined by the attorney general of the state, and if found to be in ordor the governor will order an election. The petition states that it is proposed to cut off 169 square miles from Abbe ville, 62 from Greenwood and 185 from Edgefield, making in all 463 square miles—just three more than is re quired by the constitution. The num ber of inhabitants in the proposed county will be 15,364 and the taxable property is valued at $1,721,636. Should the scheme go through all the territory that can be taken from Abbeville.will have been cut off, and the same may be sain of Edgefield; in which case, too, the idea of forming a new country with North Augusta as the county seat will be knocked out.
