On that day the hotel, while it will be not formal ly opened, will be ready to receive any guests that may desire to come. Mrs James B. Eustis the wife of the United States ambassador to France died suddenly at Ratoatti Ireland on Saturday morning. The news of her death will be received with much regret in Aiken, where the family are so well known. Geo W. Gordan, colored was ar rested by U. S. Deputy constable Hayne on Saturday night, in a pool room on Curve street charged with sel ling liquor without a license. He was carried before Commissioner Morga n, and committed to jail to await his preliminary examination. The suffrage question is now before the Constitutional convention. But those who do not take the Recorder are not likely to be grieved about losit g their vote, should such a thing liappeiijUii.il they offer to vote. The regular monthly meeting of the Improvement Society w’as held in ttie Court House on Thursday af ternoon. President Oehler in the chair, and Mr. W. W. Edgerton acting as secretary. Mr. T C. Morgan of the park com mittee reported that the committee was endeavoring to keep the parks in good cider; that the park in Iront of tiie Recorder office would ce plowed, and put iu older as soon as we had a good rain. In the dry hard condition of the soil it is impracticable to do anything with it now. The City had given Mr. H. K. Cbatfield the con tract to put a stone curb around the bed around the fountain, but he had done nothing towards it as yet. It is very important that this work should ob done at once. There were no leports from any of the other committees. In view of the tact that Mr. A. P. Ford has published a hand book of Aiken to advertise tbe city, it was decided to transfer tiie $40 appropri ated to the advertising committee to tiie tree planting committee to buy- trees and plants for tbe parks, a. d streets. Mr. Godfrey Wheeler, at his request, was relievid from the chairmanship of the tree plaiting committee, and Dr. H. J. Ray appointed in his place. Mr. Henry Smith,, in view of his active services iu improving the streets was elected an honorary mem ber of the Society. Mr. J. U. Rives suggested that it would be well if the merchants along Laurens street would have the side walks cleaned off' every Saturday night, after their stores were closed, and he would be glad to co-operate with them. At least the waste paper might be picked up, so as to make tbe sidewalks presentable for Sunday. Mr. W. W. Muckenluss was re quested to write a paper for the next meeting on the subject of recreations Ilelief in Six Hours. When he concluded Senator Tillman asked that the fur ther discussion of the subjecl be post poned until Monday evening at 7:30 o’clock. Senator Iiby would then, it was understood, move to send the article to committee to have it construed as to its constitutionality so far as the United States constitution is con cerned. The militia article was passed it’s third reading, the only change of consequence is contained in this sec tion : Section 5. The General Assembly is hereby empowered and required, at its first session alter the adoption of this Constitution, to provide such proper and liberal legislation as well guarantee and secure an annual pen sion to every indigent or disabled Confederate soldier and sailor of (his State and of the late Coiifederate States who are citizens of this State, and also to the indigent widows of Confederate soldiers a -d sailors now dead. It will he seen that “liberal legisla tion” is expected towards Confeder ate pensioners. The article as it stands is likely to give entire ^satisfaction. It is in tended with a view of carrying out the idea of committee to ask the Leg islature to increase the pension fund in this State from $50,000 to $100,000.
