Smith, colored, of Aiken was admitted to the bar last week. This makes two colored lawyers for Aiken. Smith was formerly a postal clerk on the Bort Royal Railroad and bar. also been a school teacher and of course a politician, having at one time been an aspirant for the Republican uoni- iuation to Congress, but the empty honor was won by E. J. Dickerson, the Aiken colored lawyer. Mr. A. M. Kingsbury a manufactu rer of Cincinnati Ohio having pur chased forty-seven acres of tlie farm nf Mr. Lvman Holden, near Aiken, has commenced to build a very neat four room cottage and otherwise im prove his property. As soon as the house is completed he expects to move in with his fishily with a view to becoming a permanent resident of our county. By a recent act of tlie legislature tlie county cominbsions are author ized to borrow money with which to pay cash for all bridge accounts, jury and witness certificates and repairs on all public buildings in tlie county All other creditors of the county will have to stand by and whistle for their money until the taxes are collected. Toe equity of this unfair and unjust law is about on a level w ith that ot tiie famous prorating board of 1877 and 1878 who quietly provided for their own salaries and that of ttiei: legal adviser while they prorated every other creditor of the county. The only iliflerenve lies in the fact, that in that ease county commission ers were the offenders while in thi> easethe legislature is repottsible for the injustice. Death of J Zctf Dunlap. James Evanson came into Washington, N. C., from the country to buy an ax. While departing from the store with his purchase he drop;>ed it and it fell on his right foot, completely severing the second toe. Miss Catherine Simonds, who lived near Reading, England, lost her life while hunt ing. Her horse stumbled in a rabbit hole, Miss Simonds foil and her horse kicked out her brains before she could be rescued. With his hand hanging in shreds, William Erwin, of Morris Plains, N. J., walked to a hospital, where tho wounded member was amputated. He had been hunting rabbits, and his gun was prematurely discharged. John and Cyrus Mark, of Pueblo, Colo., went duck shooting, and, seeing a flock, wore creeping upon them through tHb brush. Cy rus was just behind his brother. His gun caught in the brush aud was discharged, aud John fell dead, having received the contents in his back. James Loveless, a railroad section boss, was riding ou a railroad bicycle on tho Pem berton and Seashore railroad, when he was overtaken by an extra train, consisting of an engine and Superintendent Bannard’s special car, and his machine run down.
