Any anrl all commnnleationR' inlemle<l for this (lenarlinent shouhl l»e addressed to Frank 11.Curtiss, box 105, Aiken, S. C.; fjr* Education and Work. i There i.j a jrreat deal beinir said and | written about the edueatioi) of tlu j [•resent. That education tiniits a man j for work awl has a tendency to tmtke! liim ignore the commoner avocations i , of life. That the young m»*n of tlie! present age ate turning their backs] upon the farm and all other manual j labor and are seeking the overcrowd-j ed arennat of mercantile and profes sional life. That education among the masses is the direct cause of all this. That our schools are the source of this apprehended danger. That the day is last approaching, when, if this state of things continue, there will not be found a man to till, the soil , or build a house. The above and a hundred other things furnish ground for fear to the , chronic grumblers ond misanthropists j who would prognosticate evil and | have darkness instead of light if it ' were in their power to do so. We j protest against the truthfulness of [ such statements. We assert that a thorough, practical , education does not tend to make a man love his work less but on the oth er hand he will enjoy the labor all the more, for wheras, before he labored in a blind, unintelligent manner, now be can see, reason and philosophy in all that he does. He can comprehend the law cf cause and ellecl, and un- , derstaud the reason why. We do not deny that some schools, ao called, have had a tendency in the instruction given ts lead students away from the walks of life rather than into a nearer and dearer relation to it. This lias been the fault, not of education, but of the educator. That course of instruction is decidedly at fault which does not instil a deeper and more lasting love and veneration for the useful and humbler walks of life. If the right instruction has been given,an educated plowman will love his daily labor fur more than one who is uneducated. The former will study geology, mi neralogy, chemistry and the kindred sciences in the rolling furrow, he will study botany iti the growing grain and fender plants and life will possess for him a thousand and one charms while the uneducated man will be like “the clod which the rude swain turns and treads upon.” The one is an intelligent being, while the other is too often a mere machine, an au tomaton. Instead of less knowledge we plead for a broader, deeper and in every sense more thorough education. The times demand it, ourcountry demands it. Education Is the promulgator of la bor. Wherever wc find an intelligent and educated class of working people, there we find the highest degtee of fckill and industry. The people of Rome, who can read and write, are far more dilligeut than the Napolitans, who cannot; and the best workmen in Italy are those who have passed through tiie army, and so obtained what is practically an edu cation. This is not alone true of the people of Italy but of every civilized country on Hie globe. That this question is demanding the attention of the thinking classes is at tested in schools and colleges where a manual as well as a literary education is given the student. May the time hasten when head and hand shall le* intimately associated and neither be educated to the utter neglect and dis regard of the other. f. n e.
