The Rev. John R. Dow, returned on
Wednesday, from St. Louis, where he
had been as a delegate to the Southern
Presbyterian General Assembly. Mr.
Dow is opposed to a union with the
Norriiern Church. He thinks there
is nothing to gain ami much to be
perilled by a change of the present
status.

Lawn Parly.
The Lawn party in aid of the funds
for building a Sunday School Chapel
for St. Thaudeiis Church, will be
given to-morrow afternoon in the
park, corner of Barnwell avenue and
Laurens street, commencing at 6:30
p. m. Admission free. Cream, cake
and other refreshments for sale.
Various amusements will be provided
for the children. This party was to
lia\t taken place last Thursday, hut
was postponed for satisfactory reasons
by the ladies in charge, until to-mor

A keeper connected with the State
prison of Connecticut says that
Charlie Ross is in that institution
serving a term of imprisonment.
Charlie Ross’ father does not place
much faith in the story. There is
little doubt that the boy was killed
soon after he was kidnapped.

The Wonderful Wallace Bailey.
Mr. B. D. Lamar of Beech Island
called at the Rkuordek olliee yester
day and says that Wallace Bailey the
Augusta negro who is reported to
have found on Beech Island an Indian
jar containing $550 with which he
bought two lots in Augusta,was form
erly in his employ as ginner, a ad that
he also worked for others in that
neighborhood but that he never heard
of tin* discovery of money by any one
on Beech Island until Ids attention
was called to the statement of the
Augusta Chronicle. Mr. I.-umir states
however, that about four years ago
some one made a large excavation at
the roots of a ce
blit that he does
or for what it was done.
The tree has since died and was dug
up last year. Whether this excava
tion has anything to do with Wallace
Bailey's $550 can only he ascertained
by a statement from Bailey himself.
Mr. Lamar says that all that is attrib
uted to Bailey in regard to his ability
to catch fish with his mouth and hands
while under the water he believes to
be true.
