James Aldrich. When the governor rose to respond to tlie toast in honor of South Caroli na he was greeted with the most en thusiastic applause. He made a most happy and appropriate speech which was frequently applauded. 'The whole affair passed off’in the pleasant est manner, reflecting great credit upon the committee of arrangements. The officers hoard- j ed the trains knowing tlie men that j they wanted, promptly secured them ( and marched them to thejail, and no train arrived that did not lose one or : more men from its crew. It is he-j lieved that much of the stolen goods will be recovered. Twenty of the railroaders, emphati cally denying all knowledge of crooked work, were arrested at Brown’s Hotel in tliis city. An examination of their rooms, however, disclosed a large quantity of valuable merchandise that had been taken from tlie railroad, j There are still about two hundred tin- j served warrants out and altogether over four hundred informations have been lodged. The warrants for searching tne homes j rooms and vleven different boarding j liousesof tlie men under arrest were served to-day. As a result wagon I load upon wagon load of merchandise j lias been unloaded at Detective Gilkin- ! son’s offices on Diamond street. Among | the articles confiscated were cigars by the thousand, silks and satin by tlie web, silverware, boots, shoes, books, dress goods, jewelry, revolvers, and in fact all conceivihle kinds of merchandise. On nearly every mail arrested was found more or less stolen property, together with numerous pawn tickets, ami a peculiarly con structed pin, with which seals on ear doo.s had been opened and again closed in such a manner as defied de tection.
