He served through the war as h Sergeant in the Charles ton Light Dragoons, and was an esti mable gentleman and gallant soldier. He was appointed Postmaster of Charleston by President Cleveland without opposition from any source For the hist three years he has been a hopeh ss invalid from an insidious disease, which terminated his exist ence on Friday night. Jle was a widower and leaves a family of inter esting childA'n. His funeral services were performed at Bt. Luke’s Epia- oopal Church by the Rev. John John son on Huiidny last, and his remains were interred in Magnolia Cemetery. The of i State Superintendent Education. The Hon. J. II. Rice, State Super intendent of Education will deliver an address at the court house to-mor- row night and the public are invited to turn out in force and welcome the distinguished speaker. Mr. Rice i- devotinghia whole time and attention to the duties of his office with a zeal and et thusiasn; that merrits the hoarty commendation of all good eiti- sens. It was nothing more or less than a disgraceful shoot- affruy, just such as might have hap pened in a bar room or on the streets between two roughs, and yet these men are g.vorn officers of the court. It has come to a pretty pass when lawyers attend court with pistols a 1 their hips in violation of the law of the State and ready to discharge them In place of legal arguments at the persons of the opposing counsel. The ladies of the W. C. T. U. devo ted considerable space to the Editor of the Aiken Recorder and the Grand Woithy Patriarch of the Sons of Temperance, in the iast issue of the Temperance Worker. A reply has been forwarded to the Worker as we regard that the proper place for its ap pearance. J. Harvey Neely, of Chester,charged with an assault of a high and aggra vated nature, an account of which appeared some time ago in the Re corder, has been acquitted of tin charge. This is the man who was sent to Columbia to prevent lynching. Cambridge won the English L’ni- versity boat race. Oxford did good rowing but broke an oar and was beat en by two lengths. The world’s visible supply of cotton is 2,833,000 bales. pistoijS in counr. Mr. Jnhuston and Mr Jones Argue n Case Before a Trial Justice with Pistols—Both . Combatants Disa bled. Newberry, March 20—A most ter rible tragedy occurred here to-day in the office of Trial Justice Henry H. B ease. During the progress of an ar gument some words passed between George Johnston and John B. Jones, attorneys, representing opposite sides of the case, whereupon both sides tirew pistols aud emptied the cham bers of each at each other in quick succession, Nine shots were fired in less time than, a minute. Johnston was sliot in three places,.through tin- right ear, iu the left arm and in the thigh, but not seriously hurt. Jones was shot once through the body, aud seriously, if not fatally, wounded. George B. Comer who was also en gaged in the case, in attempting to stop the shooting barely escaped, being shot, three halls passing through his riot hi ng’ Tlie office was crowded W’itli people, and it is a wonder some one else did not get hurt. The whole allair is to be deeply regretted, as both parties are men of good standing in the community and highly con nected. The case before the trial jus tice was an attachment suit between two North Carolinians, who have been here for several days. Jones, pending the appeal of the case tried at this turm of Court, in which a verdict of pjaiisdaugliter was found, was to-day tpuue in open Court before Judge Nor ton.. Thtf first day t.f the term the prisoner filed his petition praying to lie brought to trial in each case, and two terms- of Court having passed since his commitment, and the eases for the killing of Charles and Edward Pressley having been continued on the part oft he Male, the Judge held that ill these two eases the prisoner was ttuliUed lo be discharged from impris- outueiU, and to this eftcet orders were p*3>ud.
