Helene is the handsomest >:irl of her race; She'ii an elegant form and exquisite face. And she dresses with perfectly con.sum-. given to cats when ill; so are mate grace, But she doesn't know chicken from tur key. She knows many languages, living and dead lu acieuce and fiction is very well read. But she cannot cook meat, and she cannot make bread, And she doesn’t know chicken from tur key. Fish is a great treat fer a cat; in many cases of illness they will eat this when they can take nothing else. Horse-flesh, when it can be had, is good occasionally, but it has a laxative tendency. Nice tripe or cowheei is excellent; but indeed nothing comes amiss that one eats one’s self, only we must be careful to give bread and vegetables as well as meat. INSTINCT AND REASON. Under this head Hon. (’. M. Clay, of White Hall, Ky., gives the readers of The American Field, of Chicago, the following “curious thiuge about animals.” A eat, carried from one house to a distant one, observing the course, re turns home; but when put in a bag, and the eyes are not used, they can not find the way any more. As soon as a pig is horn it moves at j once to its mothers tits and begins to suck. The smell of the milk causes the movement, you say, but this only removes the cause one step; why should this smell cause the action? Home actions of animals are purely instinctive. A horse rises first with his fore feet, the cow kind with the hind. The horse is ready to run or kick, the ox to gore as they rise. Sheep and other animals which rely on flight for protection, generally lie on high ground to see their enemy afar. Animals of prey take no such precautions. It seems that inferior animals can not count. If two persons ride on a horse, the one with the gun may jump ofl’in ambuscade and get a shot. The hawk, crow, or other bird, observing only the horseman, pays no attention to the sportesman. There is no domestic animal in our possession more fond; of cleanliness in every way than puss. Hab- . its of cleanliness in the house are very easily taught; and a well cared for and properly treated cat will even teach her kittens to be I c leanly. But pussy’s food ought always to be nice and clean, and the dish that contains j it should be washed every day. Putting fresh food among that which has been left from a former meal is a sure way of pre venting a cat from enjoying, or even touch-1 ing it. If well fed, a cat’s coat is beautifully: soft, thick, and sheeny, and she seems to tike a delight in keeping it so. When ill or . neglected, the coat becomes rough and thin, ! It is usually after a meal that puss sits down | contentedly to wash herself and pay atten- j tiou to her personal appearance ; and those! who breed beautiful cats take advantage of] this and give the animal a tiny bit of butter j after her dinner, or put a little cream on her j paws. She requires no other incentive to j cause her to proceed forwith to groom her- j self ail over. The oil of the butter and her ; own saliva seem to form a kind of soap, j which acts like magic when applied by means of her rough tongue to the coat, j Sometimes a cat requires to bo washed. The water should bo lukewarm, the soap the mildest procurable, aud the towels with which she is dried very soft; and after the operation she ought to be put into a clean! room until thoroughly dry, or what is better ] still, placed in a clean empty cage near the fire.
