Brewster’s statement in the abovt letter derives at least a semblance oi truth from tlie other letter to which 1 have alluded, and which has been read by prominent gentlemen. It is a letter from Melton himself in reply l.» a Republican of .Sumter Count? , who wrote to Melton to entreat him to abandon the ease agaiiuit Supervisor of Election Gailiaiu. Mellon in his reply said that he would grant the re quest in this instance, but asked hie not to make such a plea again, for al though these prosecutions might have no eiiect now they would have great effect on the election of 1881.” Brewster’s reputation as a first-class shyster, blackguard and politiea bushwhacker is so well established that he can hardly persuade tin- peo ple of South Carolina or any other State that the dirty work of political persecution is not the very occupation that gives him a keen appetite for dinner and a:t extra bottle of wine at Government expense. In fact this cr*aturc is so vile and utterly con temptible that it is impossible to asso ciate him in one’s mind with any thing else than that of a hideous po litical scavenger or filthy moral leper. Yet, notwithstanding this, the man may accidentally tell the truth, and when he does, if supported by collat eral circumstances corroborative of his statements, then his evidence ac quires the same weight that attaches to strong circumstantial evidence. We desire, however, to be distinctly understood as one who would not be lieve “Brewster, Attorney-General,” on oath, not if he swore until he turned pea green, unless his rotten oath was bolstered up by additional testimony. This additional testimony we have in Mel to id s letter to the “Republican of Sumteij County” when he asked him “wottt/make such a request again, for although these prosecutions might have no effect now' they would have great effect on the election of 1884.” The man Melton is shown up by the Statement of Brewster and his own handwriting as a moral deformity ..ri, th, y ; a l ou 8 » passage, dow«] e lhi"tv ■ not halt tilt he brought' Brewster b!aim-s | close to the ahelf where ' ' put The dog had a for his sagacity, aud Ci drawing-room. Something is said about the ex pense* .d iitigati n in protecting the interests of the State in the phosphate deposits and the fear is expressed that this will draw heavily upon the funds under the control of the Board. Surely with the .stale’s own salaried law ollicer, tlie Attorn*./-General, to conduct ihe proceedings, thc expenses nici'i'-nt to a suit would not aecumu- ■ate so rapidly as to create a heavy ourden up .n the funds of the depart- iiieut; besides funds are constantly accruing by ihe royalty upon phos phates. Looking at the matter from every conceivable standpoint, we can n it avoid the conviction tiiat a great opportunity will be wantonly lost, whereby the btute could display her valuable*, resources to the outside world. 'i|Whcn this noun, affair has been quietly passed over by the law officer of the circuit without even the shadow of an effort to en force the statute, and it is extremely probable that nothing more will ever come of it. Duelling has doubtless subserved a useful and lofty purpose in the past. Under proper restraints it prevented murder, street fights and buliyism, and caused men to remem ber that tbcie were social laws more sacred and imperative than any found upon tlie statute hook. Tne ques’.inn now squarely confronts us: Hus duel ling ceased to occupy a useful and honorable position in the economy of society? If public sentiment is to ^nvey the answer to this important question, we alrcodfr have it by a ver dict of acquittal in tlie Cash case and the most stolid indifference in the Youmans-O’Brian affair. For our own part, we do not object to the act, provided* it could lie en forced, but we do object to its remain ing on the statute book as a conve nient refuge for bullies and cowards, and to he pointed out to strangers with a smile of derision as South Car olina’s legal scarecrow that scares no body. If it is to remain, let it be en forced with ail the power and ability which this commonwealth can com more revolting and utterly loathsome than even the detestable Judas Iscar iot. Brewster's statements in his letter to Governor Manning and Melton’.- letter to the “Sumter Republican” dove-tail into each other, and furnish convincing proof that Mellon is just ■what he was always thought, to be, a voluntary agent in all the political prosecutions in which he has been en gaged. Brewster’s accusation that Melton’s reports to the Government were the foundation and starting point of all these iniquitous proceed ings, are thoroughly consistent with the record of the man. During the war he oecupi«l a bombproof on the staff of the Adjutant-General, where he carefully preserved his worthless carcass out of the reach of Yankee bullets, and after the war he became a political prostitute upon the first temptation, commencing by voting for Greeley and betting his money on Grant and winding up by surrender ing body and soul to tlie negro and j carpetbag thieves who had temporari ly captured thc treasury and Govern ment of t!;e State. - j a „ [ mand, or let it be wiped from the sta;- A judge of tlie Circuit Court, elect-1 ed by the vote of Radical thieves. ovation,” is uttered in oJ’ connection with imperial progress—when! a sovereign, at some rare climax of p^ldar enthusiasm, receives the homage of theV'atiou in its one undivided voice—then, iJccd, the word is out of time and tune with jhe event.
