There arc several very i important matters which will invoke ''thejr calm and thoii'rittful attention, but we see no necessity for a long* session. The people hail enouirh lefris- lation from the l. sl Legislature to serve them for a long time; therefore , the sooner our present legislators «lis- pateh the tweessary bu fue-s that will : be presented to tiiem the better they will please their constituency. We do not counsel unseemly haste,, but we do think that a great deal of: precious time is friiteved away at the : coinnieuectnent of almost every ses sion which might easily be turped to* good account, thereby avoiding a pell- j inel! push and drive at the wind up* which frequently occasions fatal omis- ’ sions and absurd blunders. The following are about the ino.>t * necessary measures that will engage! their attention: 1. An ample appropriation to meet; all proper election expenses, including j the pay of commis-i >ners, managers | and clerks of election. 2. A liberal provision for the eduea- tional establishments of the State. d. The passage of a judicious meas- ; ure preventing unjust di^rimiiuitions ' in transportation by the railroad cor porations of the State. 4. Such modifications of the stock j law as may he considered absolutely j essential. Various <Tf^r matters will come up ! for consideration, but if our Rcpresen- • tatives wish to subserve the host inte rests of the .Slate and preserve their; popularity with their constituents they will neither pass many new laws nor! tinker too freely with the old. Let ! what is done lie done well, hut donT ! try to do too much. Superabundant legislation is one of the greatest afiiic- j tions that can befal any people, involv ing great expense and much vexation ! of spirit. The OHicial Count. In several of the counties of the j Btate candidates were put in nomina-1 tion for sherit!’, clerk of the court and coroner, and <leelared elected hy ihe managers. The Board of Canvassers, i by a majority vote, have decided these elections to be illegal, which leaves the present incumbents in possession <#£_the offices for the full terjn of tiie persons whom they succeeded by ap- lintment. While Governor Hagood’s term of office has been marked by no dashing or startling achievements, it will ever be remembered as an era of unquali fied prosperity and substantial pro- pr sjs. lie has administered the duties of ids high office with firmness and decision, tempered hy justice and con servatism, and no reasonable man can f ay au'^i't against him. In retiring to private life lie deserves the cordial well done of the entire people, as a just tribute to a faithful and honorable public servant. Gkx. James R. ( jiaemeus, of Fort Pill >\v notoriety, who lost his seat as a Democrat in the present Congress, hi - opponent, Lynch, a colored Repub lican. being awarded the seat by a Re- publi-*an majority, has just lost his election, in Mississippi, in conse quence of 1,172 tickets being wronly printed. The tickets wore cast for “J. R. Oiamblcss” instead of ‘‘J. R. Chal mers.” Chalmers ran as a Republi can, and has been beaten by the lion. Van II. Manning, the regular Demo cratic candidate. According to the census of 1880 the entire vote of the State was 205,780. At the election of 1878 the total vote east was 182,682, and in 1880 170,97(5. The entire registered vote of the State j is about 150,009, which is 55,789 les‘- ; than the voting population, according ; to the United Stales census. JI.
