V ? the winner of the five doilar-gold piece ! offered b>v the Bank of Clover to the j person guessing nearest to the number { of bales of York county cotton ginned 1 up to December 1. According to the government figures the total number of bales ginned was 2*1,903 and Mr. Carroll's guess was 24,5*06. The complete list of guesses together with the guess of each to the number of several hundred, was printed in The Yorkvilife Krquirer several weeks ago. Beating Board Bill. Cherokee Times, December 12: R. L. Dawson, a white man about 50 years of age, was arrested in Gaffney Saturday night by Deputy Sheriff Henry Lockhart on two warrants, one from Greenville and the other from York, both charging him with beating a board bill. He was taken before a local magistrate imnKIa rv flimioh hnilfl i T1 auu uuiiift utuivic iv AMI ... the sum of $200, was committe<l to the Cherokee county jail. He will be taken either to York or Greenville for trial. Serious Automobile Accident. Because of the sudden and unaccountable locking: of the steering gear of a Ford in which they were riding last Tuesday afternoon, Mr. Squire TatloeV and his son Robert, of Gastonia, N. C., had a close call of it for their lives. In fact it is not certain that Mr. Tatlock's injuries may not yet prove fatal. The younger man was not injured. The accident occurred about two miles east of the courthouse on the Yorkville-Rock Hill road. The two men were 'coming from Rock Hill on their way to Gastonia. The Ford suddenly turned over, pinning the elder Tatlock underneath, and injuring him to such an extent that he lost all use of his limbs. He was moved to the Shadon hotel in Yorkvllle where he received first aid at the hands of Dr. J. B. Owens, and next morning he was removed to the hospital at Gastonia, his condition but little if any improved. The overturned F#rd car was badly wrecked. ? Quite a sensation was stirred up among the negroes of Atlanta a few days ago by the discovery that a negro undertaker nAmed L. F. Ware, had been engaged in the business of digging up and stealing back the caskets he was selling to his customers. Suspicion had been aroused in various ways and detectives who laid in wait at the cemetery caught the grave robbers in the act. The practice was to go to the cemetery the night of the burial, or the next night, take up the mulfpt romnvp Iwlv nnrl nnt it back In the box and then take the casket back to the undertaking: establishment. Investigation of the undertaking establishment disclosed several caskets that had been sold at from $100 to $500 each, with earth stains on them, showing that they had been previously msed. Ware and two negroes he had been using to dig up the coffins were arrested and coramitted to jail .Ware denied all knowledge of the affair; but his alleged employes confessed to all details. ?A broader view of the problems of the Mississippi river and its tributaries was urged on the house flood control committee Wednesday by citizens of the lower Mississippi valley, who declared that they were constantly being subjected to the hazards of flood waters notwithstanding that their districts had not contributed "a drop of water to the swollen streams " One after another the witnesses before the committee insisted that the problem was one for the nati"<n as a whole. James E. .Edmonds, of New Orleans, said years ago the slogan was "After the Panama canal, the Mississippi river," but that the dream had never been realized. The witnesses told the committee of the huge acre ui Iiv.il vuc aun Wins toincu Iinuj up the river, while at the same time the county was draining marsh land and irrigating arid lands to provide for the fast growing population. At the same time, they said, an enormous wastage of water resources and transportation possibilities was going on. (treat sums were being spent for temporary work which should go into a permanent program, they said, and threats of floods were shifting investment and reducing the purchasing powers of many communities. ?
