? Joliet, Illinois, August 9: Approximately 1,300 engineers, firemen, conductors' and brakemen of the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern (Big Four) brotherhood walked out here at midnight last night in protest to the stationing of troops around the yards. There were no disorders. The strike of the '"Big Four" brotherhood here is exclusively a local action, ordered by Chairman Charles O'Day, of the Joliet division of the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern. At a meeting last night, he was instructed by the men to notify the railroad executives of the impending strike, unless the troops were removed. It has not been learned whether the national officers have approved of the local strike. AT THE CHURCHES FIRST BAPTIST Rev. D. L. Hill, Pastor. Sunday Worship?Sunday school at 10 a. m. Casey and His Varieties, a musical comedy, and "Charm," the wondei horse, will be combined in a tent show here all next week on the Smith Lot. Speaking of the musical comedy, the Charlotte, N. C. Observer said: "The company comes to Charlotte from Florida, where it has been having a successful run in the larger cities. During the season the comivany has been appearing in the principal theatre points in Dixie, and the unanimous word received in advance is that the company comprises a group of classy entertainers whose material is fresh and entertaining and bound to please audiences at the Piedmont. ? "Verge Downard? well known in Charlotte theatrical circles, neaus mis company and appears in comedy character roles. He is ably assisted by his brother,' Kit Downard. Both are singers and darfcers quite above the ordinary and their offerings will be awaited with keen interest. "Dan Deering is the blackface comedian of the company, llis line is novel, clean and has the faculty of provoking mirth all the time he is on the stage. Miss Bonnie Mack is the attractive soubrette, coming with a whole store of the newest song hits and dance numbers that will be remembered here a long time. "Another one of the specialty headliners of the company is (,'al West, 'the sweetest yodler in Dixie,' who will be seen and heard iit each performance with several yodles of his own composition.
