Gricr Moffatt of Chester, S. C., were guests for the week end of the latter's mother Mrs. Augusta Culp. Leon H. Ligon of Denmark. S. C., and Jack Ligon pf Shelby, N. C., were visitors in Fort Mill this week, guests of L. A. Harris. Mrs. R. L. Erwin and Mr. and Mrs. John Erwin of Charlotte were guests during the past week ol Mr. and Mrs. R. F. drier. Mi s. J. T. McGregor and her children . of Huntsville, Ala., are guests hi the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Boyd. Miss Dora drier has returned to her home in Charlotte after a week's visit to relatives in Fort Mill. Miss Louise Parks left this week on a vacation trip to Brevard. N. C., and other resorts in western North Carolina. The Rev. M. W. Gordon of Conway, S. C.. spent several days of the past week visiting relatives and friends in the community. Miss Martha Dyches has as her guest Miss Madeline Kelly of Pelzer, S. C. I Miss Louise McMurray of Washinpton. D. C., is spending a vacation in Fort Mill visiting her lather J. H. McMurray. SOUTH CAROLINA NEWS ? Mrs. Carry McC. Patrick, of Anderson, has announced herself as a candidate for the house of represen* tatives. Mrs. Patrick has been identified with the society page of the Anderson Daily Mail for the past seventeen years. She is a woman of fine ability and excellent judgment. ? Rev. Dr. A. D. P. Gilmour, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of S|>artanburg, has announced his acceptance of a call to the First Presbyterian church of Wilmington, N. C. ? John Britton, son of Chief of Police Britton of Branchville, was killed by Sheriff Ackerman of Colleton county, while resisting1 arrest for moonshining. Britton was surprised while at work at his still, and fired at the sheriff and his deputies. ? kYank M. Jeffords who with Ira Harrison and Glenn Treece, were convicted of the murder of John C. Arnette in Richland some months ago,, has been granted until July 22 to perfect his appeal to the supreme court. They were tried during the week of May 15. All were convicted. Jeffords and Harrison were sentenced to death and Treece to life imprisonment. The extension of time applies also to Harrison, who also appealed. ? The derailment of four cars of peaches on the Southern railway near Wclford tied up traffic for about eight hours on Tuesday. The delay would not have been more than two hours ordinarily, but the striking shopmen said that inasmuch as there was nobody under the wreck it was no concern of theirs and they refused to touch it. A special report by the department 4 of agriculture as to the damage ^ wrought in the cotton states by the boll weevil will be made under a resolution by Senator Smith (Democrat) of South Carolina, adopted Wednesday by the senate. The information is to be given in the August cotton crop report of the department. The secretary of agriculture is directed under the Smith resolution to confer with agricultural commissions county agents and others in the cotton belt and obtain information regarding the area of weevil infested fields and also estimates of the money damage. The information is to be published in detail by the states. tv Ammonia is being manufactured from the nitrogen found in molasses in a sugar refinery in Prance. it^'Thc average pay of 170.000 clergymen in this country is S15.54 a week. , XV President Harding has a copy of the Marion Star, his own paper, delivered at his executive desk every morning and he reads It before he does anything else. Dr. Walker was a native of Yorkville, the son of < the late Dr. William M. Walker. In 1 early life he served as a pharmacist, * and later was graduated from the Louisville Medical college, after which 1 ho practiced his profession in Meeklenburg county, Northeastern York, 1 Union county, and finally locating in Yorkville about 28 years ago.
