A,4h,,r CrlfHth Is (n hp the first president of the Irish Free State, according to present appearances. The situation has been much mixed and it looked dangerous. De Valera was president of the Irish republic, which luid no recognition from Great Britain. and was opposed to the treaty 'creating the Irish Free State. The dail eireann is the representative body of the Irish republic. When it voted by a majority of seven to accept the British treaty, De Valera resigned. There j was a motion to re-elect him and it failed by two vot?s. Then Arthur Griffith was elected'president of the dail eireann in place of De Valera. There was confusion and it looked as If there was to be a split. After a while the two sides began to have the appearance of working together and it was agreed to adjourn the dail until February 14, after which Griffith named his cabinet officers. In the meantime arrangements are to be made to turn the affairs of the Irish republic over to the Irish Free State, and as soon as possible there must be a general election. It is not certain that Griffith will be a candidate and | as to whether De Valera will stand for the place remains to be seen.
