Watkins, in Lancaster, in 1915, was lodged in the jail at Lancaster, Wednesday night by Sheriff Hunter. McIlwain remained at large after the killing until last year when he was caught in Detroit. A long legal fight started and it was not until last week that the negro was allowed to be extradited by Detroit authorities. The negro killed Mr. Watkins in cold blood, according to the evidence in the case. Mr. Watkins was superintendent of the Lancaster oil mill at, the time, McIIwain being in his employ. ? Eugene S. Blonse and II. H. Evans ave announced themselves as canuitcs for the house of representatives from Newberry to succeed Hon. George S. Mower, deceased, and Evans and Sheriff Cannon G. B'ease had a personal altercation yesterday, because of certain inferences contained in a card published by Evans. Evans stated in the card that "If the voters wanted the fearful expense of the sheriff's office, don't vote for me." Blease and ; Evans had some words about the matter, as the result of which Blease called Evans a liar and Evans struck Blease in the face. Bystanders interfered before the trouble progress- i ed further, and friends were hoping i yesterday that there would be no more of it. ? A horrible murder, committed near Eeosville, in Lexington county, is the criminal sensation of the week. The victim was William Brazcll, a young j college student, who was making his way during the summer as a taxi driver. F. J. Kirby, formerly of York 1 county and C. O. Fox and Jesse Gabbins were committed to Richmond county, Ga? jail in Augusta, Monday, with practically satisfactory evidence of their guilt. In fact Kirby has told I all about it, and the corroborative Circumstances in evidence leave but little doubt of the Substantial correctness of ' his story. Kirby's story is to the effect that the three boys had in mind a trip over into Lexington county in a . search for "girls." They picked out a j dr vpr much at randon but rather with ( reference to the quality and value of , the machine he was driving and that j was how they hit upon young Brazell ( with a Cadillac. After driving some ( distance on their way, Brazell began to show signs of restlesness because of the indeflniteness of their destina- ( tion and Fox knocked him across the head. Then Fox and Gabbins dragged the boy to the ground and Fox stabbed him to death while he was begging , for mercy. He stuck his knife into his J victim's chest and twisted the weapon around. After putting the body back ' into the car and carrying it some dis- ' tance they hid it by the roadside and ! proceeded op toward Augusta, Ga., J near which city they ran out of gaso- 1 line and had tire trouble.*. Kirby was 1 sent for a new tire, and he told the ' officers sibout the affair with the re- J ' suit that all three were rounded up ' and taken to Augusta. The taxi 1 driver was robbed of a sum of money j' that was on his person and among!1 other things the boys had in mind an 11 expedition of robbery and murder until they could dispose of the car.
