CONGRESS GETTING BUSY. b Desperate Effect to Dispose of Many Important Bills, k Congress faces its busiest week thus L far of the short session, with final en5 actment of the war revenue bill, lega islatlon to validate Informal war con9 tracts and the oil land leasing measure regarded by leaders as the most urgent matters at hand. A number of the regular annual appropriation bills are also pending and may be completed before Saturday night. Congestion of legislation caused committee work to begin Sunday and. although few leaders of either party now feel that an extra session can be avoided, regular night sessions in both senate and house may begin soon. Strenuous efforts already are being made to prevent failure of many important bills while members, opposed to certain legislation are threatening filibusters, confident of their success in preventing action before the session ends March' 4. 0 Equal suffrage may be brought up ? again this week in the senate. Advocates of the Susan B. Anthony resolution are holding conference regarding procedure, with some urging a vote next Friday. They admit, however, that the required two-thirds ma0 Jority has not yet been secured. The war revenue bill will be given right of way this week in both houses. ?The conference agreement will be presented Weanesday to the house and called up Friday with leaders expecting quick approval. Senate approval is expected Saturday or early next 'week and present plans are to hold the bill in Washington if it cannot reach President Wilson in France before he sails for home. Many regular appropriation bills are before both bodies for action. Eight of them have been passed by the house rand five arc aireaoy lor bcuiiio cl\* The senate has resumed work on the 1400,000,000 postofflce measure, and after its disposition the deficiency bill to rescind 116,000,000,000 or war ap propriatlons will be taken up. The rivers and harbors, legislative and other supply measures will follow. The house military committee exmO pects to report out the army approEW priatlon bill this week and Represenmm tative Kltchln, the democratic leader, P hopes that by February 15 the house N will have passed all regular money bills. The navy bill with its three-year building program is expected to be- ( debated in the house this week. . Qeneral debate on peace and other ( questions will be continued this week j in the senate with a partisan fight imminent over the proposal for an immediate investigation of the FordNewberry election contest. The Brit- < ~ ish import embargo also may be a subject of senate discussion. Senator Weeks, of Massachusetts, republican. ! plans to present a resolution of inquiry on the subject tomorrow. Another effort to prevent failure of the waterpower developement bill will h? made tomorrow by the senate and house conferees, with the question 01 appropriating $1,250,000 for maintaining the fixed wheat prices also will be ; brought out this week in a new bill prepared by Senator Gore, chairman of the agriculture commission. Congressmen Will Take it Up. The plan of waging a compaign in the south to urge reduction on the cotton acreage and attention by growers of all their cotton until a price of 35 cents a pound is reached will be discussed early this week at a meeting of members of the senate and house from the cotton states, according to an Asso- ' elated Press dispatch from Washington. The meeting was decided upon at a joint session of the senate and house agriculture committees last Saturday, called by senators Smith of South Carolina, Sheppard of Texas, Smith of Georgia and Representatives Heflin of Alabama, Lee of Georgia, Jacowayof Arkansas, Candler of Mississippi and Young of Texas. ariviaflhilitv of amending the cotton futures act to prevent delivery of accumulated stocks of cheap, low grade cotton on exchange In sett'v nients of contracts calling: for high >r prices and higher grade cotton also will be discussed at the meeting. T. Wong, head of the Chinese educational mission to Washington, and two of his assistants, were mysteriously murdered In Washington last week The United States has decided to return the 87 Dutch ships that were seized in American ports last spring and will pay a liberal price for the use that has been made of them. ^ OB ITUARY Died At his home in the Lockmore mill village, at about 5.30 o'clock p. m Saturday, after being struck by a train. Mr. WILLIAM JAMES LOVE, aged 72 years. The interment was at Beershcba on Sunday after funeral services at the home by Rev. Dr. E. E. Gillespie. r The deceased leaves a widow and the following children: Mrs. C. E. Stewart of No. 5, Yorkville; Mrs. J. B. MoCarter, of Filbert No. 1; J. Stanhope Love, at home: W. B. Love, Yorkville No. 5: J. F. Love, Yorkville N'o. 7; Misses Maggie and Rachel Love, at home. At his home on Sharon No- 1, Monday, February 3, at 3.30 a. m., of pneumonia, Mr. SAMUEL WALTER SHERER, aged 38 years. He is survived by his widow, who was Mrs. Florence Plexico of Bullock's Creek, and the following children: Albert. ^ Earl, Pressly H'cklin, Strauss, Sarah. - and Hunter, also oy his father, H. H. Sherer of N'o. 1, Hickory Grove, and the following sisters and brother: Mrs Mattie Faris of Bethany: Mrs. B. H. Horton of No. 1. Sharon; and Bruce Sherer of No. 1, Hickory Grove. The interment was at Sharon yesterday at 3 30 f p. m., after funeral services conducted by Rev. E. B. Hunter. On Monday. January 27, at the home of his parents. THEODORE ALLEN, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Allen. He was in the 13th year of his age. Death was caused by pneumonia following influenza. The interment was ai cwv,.. Baptist church, on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. At the home of her aunt. Mrs. Mary Jane Turner in Clover, on Friday, January 31. Miss JANIE TURNER, only daughter of Mrs- Joe Turner. The deceased is survived by her mother and two brothers. Funeral services were conducted by her pastor,. Rev. H. A. Whitten, and the interment was in the Bethany cemetery Friday afternoon. At the home of its parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Smith, at the Hawthorn mill village, in Clover, four months old inm fant, on January 30. The funeral was conducted by Rev. O. L. Jones and the interment was in Woodside cemetery. Suddenly, following a stroke of appoplexy, at the home of his niece, Mrs. E. L. Barnett, in the India Hook ^ neighborhood, on Saturday night, Mr. W. J. FARIS, in the 82d year of his age. The deceased, who made his home with his niece, Mrs. Barnett, nt i.i? Mr. Faris was a veteran of the Civil war, having served the full four years with South Carolina troops. All of his children are dead; but he is survived by three grand children.
