gave out a statement of his views on the cotton question as follows: "'Cotton is not a sectional question," said Mr. McLaurtn. "Its monopoly by the United States is one of our most valuable national assets. There Is one reason why if cotton prices are ttxed Sf they will certainly be high. We must maintain the American dollar at par in every country in the world, because we are financing the war. Karly in the war, when the United States was exporting billions all over the world, our dollar stood at par everywhere. Now that our iron and steel and other products are being consumed it is below par in some neutral countries, notably Spain. The only way to maintain it at par is to make the value of our exports equal to or exceed those of our imports. Cotton is the only product which can perform that function. We are obliged to have certain products from Spain for use in fertiliser and ore production- if they raise the price of these, the only thing is to raise the price of cotton, which she can get nowhere else. "1 suppose when the president spoke of controlling the distribution of cotton, it was with reference to this condition of affairs. Cotton has been for years the main factor 111 our balance of trade and it is our best reliance now in maintaining the American dollar at par in neutral countries. Why cheapen our own products abroad? ... ..... . . r i na\e not ngureu uui uiu cosi ui this crop, but 1 tec in the Progressive Farmer that it is placed at 33 cents a pound and that is not far out of line with my own calculations. Labor has been scarce all the year- 1 had to make my choice between losing a part of my cotton or corn crop and of course 1 let the corn go. if 1 count that as an expense iny cotton will cost Mte over 33 cents. Whatever is done should be done at once. The talk about price lixing has cost the small farmers heavily and we ought to know "where we are at.'" ? The cotton mills of Newberry closed down last Saturday because so many of their operatives were incapacitated on account of inlluensa. They were hoping to resume work yesterday. ? : Special Dotirts.
