THE COLUMBIA MEETING. Big Crowd In Opera House Makes 4 Things Lively. The Richland county campaign meeting yesterday was held in the Columbia theatre, and practically the entire seating space was tilled with people representing both factions of the party. There were large numbers of antiHlease!tes present, but the Bleaseites A were evidently in considerable ma^ jority. I* D. Jennings was the first speaker; but very little that he said could be heard on account of interruptions. VV. P. Pollock was not interrupted until he had made considerable pro^ gress with his speech; but during the w latter part of what he had to say he was interrupted repeatedly. Senator Smith was accorded quite an ovation by the anti-Bleaseites, and the Bleaseites did not try to interfere. When Governor Blease appeared on the stand there was tremendous applause from his friends and a storm of hisses from the opposition. The demonstration lasted quite a while. % and when it became evident that the opposition was trying to make itself especially obnoxious, the governor said that if he was not permitted a fair hearing in the opera house he would go to the state-house steps in the evening and speak from there. ^ "If you start anything here today," " "* : ^ V*?o nnnAnantS tne governur suiu iu ? *> , "many of you are likely to be carried out." He denounced the hissers as belly crawlers and drunken cigarette suckers Charging that most of the interruption came from the habitues of the Metropolitan, Ridgewood and Columbia clubs, he ordered Constable Kibbler to close those places and keep 9 them closed until further orders, else the constable would lose his job. During his speech, Mr. Pollock referred to the shooting of Dr. James Mcintosh and said: "The gunmen may shoot down good men. The 'Dago Franks.' the 'Leftie Louies,' the 'Whitey Lewises,' and the 'Gyp the Bloods' may shoot down good citizens but for every one shot down there will be others to take his place. The liberties of men," he added, "are not destroyed by midnight assassins." Governor Blease deplored the shooting of Dr. Mcintosh and said he was very sorry that the doctor was unable to be present. He went on to say k that Dr. Mcintosh was not shot by a Bleaseite for Bleaseites are not assasv sins. ^ Following out tne promise uc ium>? In reply to Banker Norwood, Governor Blease proceeded to answer the question, "What about Dr. Mclntosh?" He read extracts from his Abbeville speech and said: "Dr. James Mcintosh may not be known to you, but he is known to your physicians. Ask them who he is. As a physician and as a man he stands high in his state, and no one would say that Dr. Mcintosh would lie. He then read a statement to which was attached the signature of the late Dr. A. B. Knowlton and Dr. James H. Mcintosh, as follows: "At the request of Mr. W. R. Richey, of Baurens. S. C., and with the permission of Capt. J. D. Griffith, superintendent of the state peniten* tiary, and of Dr. R. T. Jennings, surgeon of the same, we have this day visited and examined Mr. R. A. Richey, now confined in the hospital of the penitentiary. We would report that we find Mr. Richey suffering from a marked neurosis, that the ? same closely simulates a true paralysis. We are informed that Mr. Richey has had such trouble for the past ten year* or more, and close confinement is rendering it more marked. We do not believe this condition will be improved so long as Mr. Richey remains a prisoner in the penitentiary. We do believe that freedom, out door exercise, etc., would restore him to as good a state of health as he has enjoyed for the past ten years. Respectfully submitted, ^ "A. B. Knowlton, M. D. "James H. Mcintosh, M. D." After reading the statement the governor said in effect. ? "If Dr. Mcintosh had been at the meeting today I would have asked him if the signature were authentic, and if he had said no. then I would have at once joined him In the hunt for the forger in order that Justice might be done." Along with the statement of Drs. Knowlton and Mcintosh, the record of the Richey case contains records of a number of similar statements by 41 other physicians equally reputable. f #1 ? 1 SOUTH CAROLINA NEWS. ? R. N. They all bought Mutual Benefit Insurance because they believed, aiul correctly, that there was none better, that the best time to insure was while they were young, in good health and could get it.
