February 12.?Up to yesterday at noon the Clover Oil Mill ginnery had ginned 3,293 bales of cotton, as compared with about 1,800 last year, which would Indicate, grant^ ing that under normal conditions, the yield in Its territory would have been about the same last year as this, that not less than 1,500 bales were destroyed by the hailstorm of August 3, 1912. Mr. J. Meek Smith, the manager of ^ the oil mill plant, says that he hopes to gin at least eight more bales, thus W rounding out 3,300, but that he does not know where they are to come from. Since September 1, 1913, Mr. W. P. Smith has bought considerably over 5,000 bales of cotton off of wagons at Clover. This is the largest number of bales that has ever been sold on this market during a similar period in the history of the town. Mr. J. Ed Brison is arranging to build a handsome residence here. Lumber shippers have bought large quantities of timber from landowners west of Clover during the past few months, the total is estimated at not less than two million feet, and all of it is to be shipped from Clover, in fact, shipments commenced last fall and it is estimated that they will continue during the next two years. Poplar and various kinds of oak make up the bulk of the shipments. The chaingang is now engaged on that part of the North and South road between the oil mill and the -- - - - - J ...ill southern limits or me town, ?uu very likely finish that section during the next few days, provided weather conditions permit, when it will be transferred to that part of the road lying just above the cotton mill. Senator Carlisle's Bill.?Attorney H. R Carlisle, senator from Spartanburg HP county, has introduced a bill before the rV legislature fixing the advertising rates newspapers shall charge, and providing that the rate for publishing the treasurer's reports shall not exceed $60, irrespective of length. To show the injustice of such a statute we have only to state that in 1912 this report measured 332 inches, and last year 378 ^ inches! If the legislature undertakes ^ to aribtrarily fix the rate newspapers shall charge for matter appearing in their columns, then in common justice a law should be enacted and enforced that no lawyer shall charge more for preparing and pleading a case before the circuit court and supreme courts than for a municipal and magistrate's courts, and that no matter how much time and experience the case requires, his fee shall not exceed five dollars!?
